Celiac.com 03/30/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about alcoholic seltzer. Specifically, which brands of gluten-free seltzer are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

Alcoholic seltzers have become extremely popular, and there are literally dozens of brands on the market. According to Wikipedia, "Hard seltzer, spiked seltzer or hard sparkling alcohol water is a type of highball drink containing carbonated water, alcohol, and often fruit flavoring. In the US the alcohol is usually made by fermenting cane sugar; sometimes malted barley is used."

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The key to the answer is to find brands that are naturally fermented, or contain distilled alcohol, and do not include malted barley. Read labels and choose carefully.

Malt would be made from either barley or wheat and both are gluten containing grains.

    On their site it says:

We spike our 5% ABV drinks with naturally gluten-free alcohol derived from malt beer.

Just to be on the safe side you may want to go with one of the brands in our article.

I am very newly diagnosed with wheat and gluten allergies and am over 50 years old. Living gluten free for the past month has been challenging. Recently stopped at a restaurant with gluten-free menu options. Saw Ketel One Botanical spritzers on the menu. Had a sip and decided to read the label. The waitress said it was gluten free but the label told another story which left me confused. Gluten removed but they cant certify it to be gluten free?  Is it or isnt it?  Thanks.

Allergies? Do you mean to say you have been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity? I ask because many people do not realize that celiac disease is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune disease.

To answer your question, gluten can be removed but if the product comes in contact with gluten during processing on equipment used to also process gluten containing grains for other products then it has become cross-contaminated.
