Australia: More than 250,000 people suffering from Coeliac Disease

In Australia today there are more than 250,000 people suffering from Coeliac Disease - and not all know it or know how to deal with it. There are also many who experience other difficulties with wheat, gluten and bread improvers including Autism sufferers. Through our research and experiences, we understand that those with the disease, often in the first instance, are overwhelmed with all the changes they need to consider and make. However, we guarantee that as time passes and your knowledg

Gluten Free Restaurant Experiences

Travel Dude looked online and found that The Original Pancake House serves gluten-free pancakes! He drove me 30 minutes away to try them. They gave me six (WAY too many), and only AFTERWARD told me I could order a half-order. They were ok. Travel Dude (who's finicky and usually hates gluten-free food) tried them and said he'd eat them himself. It was cool that there didn't have to be much fuss or weirdness when I ordered and I got to eat something fairly tasty. The lingonberries were prett

I'm Baa-aack!

Aloha! I'm back on the blog and back home. I went to Jamaica in Jan. and again in Feb. and just returned from 11 days on Kauai! I also went to the Super Bowl. I've been having tons of fun, as well as tons of stress, and not much gluten! Let's get you up-to-date: I flew to San Antonio over Turkey Day 2008 and the city was kindof a letdown. The RiverWalk seemed to be the only draw and I wasn't too impressed. I was shocked that my best friend (I hate the acronym bff) whom I like to call M

I'm A New Celiac

Hi, I'm a new member to this group. I've been avoiding gluten for almost one year and a half, except for accidental ingesting. I was technically diagnosed via blood test about about 7 months ago, and there was still gluten in my system obviously. My sister is gluten free even though she has never taken the test and she swears that she is a new woman. She talked me into going gluten free. I have severe fibromyalgia and am overweight. When I went gluten free, I lost a little weight, my skin

Is there a link between Parkinson's Disease and Gluten Intolerance/Celiac Disease?

I caught a spot on Oprah today with the actor Michael J. Fox discussing his battle with the neurological symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. He's always been an engaging persona, and I enjoyed the segment. As a nurse, I've always had a strong interest in neurological disorders, and have done a lot of reading on the links between Celiac disease and neurological disorders, especially gluten ataxia. At this point, Michael's symptoms are very noticeable and greatly affect the day-to-day activities o

9 - Bleh.

I FINALLY did my morning routine this morning. It's either run the red light or just don't do anything. Ugh. . .I feel awful. I absolutely need to call the manager of the restaurant we went to Monday night. At least for the FIRST time, I had a normal bowel movement. . .**happy dances**. That's such an amazing rare thing. Heh, things to get excited about, who knew. **smirk**   We're stripping our kitchen down this weekend. Hubby will put up a few more shelves in the pantry - we're disc

8 - Edjumicating Myself

The books came in the mail yesterday. I bought these: (from (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned) - though I was a little frustrated with the delivery time. I should have ordered them from my local book store and kept the money here in town, they would have gotten here the same day despite my paying extra to get them here faster.)   Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic The First Year: Celiac Disease and Living Gluten-Free: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed C

7 - Sigh

We're back from seeing the kids.   Youngest son thinks his mother is a 'whack job' because there's something wrong with her AGAIN. Actually. . .this is the only thing that's BEEN wrong. Get misdiagnosed too many times and it ruins any future reality of what's truly wrong.   Sigh.   And this is a whole heck of a lot easier to deal with that the OTHER THIINGS.   Grrrr.   I have a headache.   I'm going to bed.

6 - Busy Week, Busier Weekend

Saturday morning. I have a long day ahead of me. I'm going back down to Chattanooga where my children are to spend some time with them. My daughter and her fiance are staying with my youngest son for the week.   We are all supposed to go over to my daughter-in-law's (youngest son's wife) family for a cook out tonight. Heh. . .it's supposed to be raining today/tonight, so I don't know how that will turn out. I had to kick myself in the brain to remember that I need to prepare something t

Writing A Book And Looking For The Celiac Story!

I am new to blogging but I need some help from the celiac community. I have a background in psychology and I have set out to write a book. I have been diagnosed for 5 years (am 32 years old) after years and years of misdiagnosis. After being sick for most of my life...I feel I have only just 'awoke' to realize that I have much more mental and physical capacity than I did when I was trying to cope with life undiagnosed. However, this doesn't discount where I have been, on my quest and journey to

5 - Emotional Stuff

I'm frustrated. I bought gluten free corn bread mix. . .made gluten free corn bread - and got glutted. I hurt. **Grrrr.**   Last year they diagnosed me with a form of dystrophy - put me on all sorts of drugs, steroids - did all sorts of medical procedures. . .just to finally figure out I was misdiagnosed AGAIN. This year. . . grief, I'm getting to be afraid of the New Years. What next?   Sigh.   I so don't feel good.   I ordered a few Celiac books off of Amazon tonight. Mayb

Petition to FDA to Disclose Barley and Rye Ingredients on Food Labels

Hi All, Back in September of 2008, I submitted a petition to FDA to include rye and barley in the list of most common allergens which must be disclosed on packaging. Right now, only wheat has to be disclosed, but as we all know the gluten of rye and barley is just as offensive to celiacs as that of wheat. So to include wheat in the list, without including rye and barley was nonsensical. The list needs to be amended so that rye and barley sources are also disclosed. Without this disclosure, suc

I'm tired. If I could go to bed right now, I would in a heartbeat. Sigh. I'll be glad when the fatigue begins to lift. My brain has too much energy for my body to be in slow-mo.   I picked up a grinder today. . .actually two, because I don't know which one will work better. One will have to go back. . . or not. . . if I can talk my husband into the fact that we neeeeeeed a new coffee grinder, any way. Unfortunately, I think THAT's the grinder that will work the best, so the other one

Peroxide wont work. Peroxide is what they use to bleach flour to make it white flour. It doesn't effect the gluten.   dernit.

2 - Cleaning Up Gluten Spills

I've been thinking about converting my kitchen into a gluten-free kitchen - especially after yesterday **rolls eyes** - running to the bathroom all morning when I'd MUCH rather be at church is not my idea of how to spend a Sunday morning. Nope. **shakes head**   I had an apple for dinner last night. I need to lose 50 lbs (now 43) from last year's misdiagnosis fiasco. . . but still, I'd rather lose the weight in a healthy way. This isn't it. I've lost seven pounds in the last two days.

I went to my neighbor's house this morning to gab a bit before we went to the flea market. I was offered a cup of coffee, and politely turned it down. It was flavored coffee - and I just really didn't want to go into their kitchen and study the ingredients. I drank a glass of water and enjoyed the conversation.   Then we went to the flea market. I'm a whole three days old of thinking about what goes into my mouth. I haven't read labels in years. I figured a soda would be fine if it was c

Steve's Pizza

I just have to share; Steve's Pizza is now making Gluten Free PIZZA!!!! I had it last night for dinner, from the El Dorado Restaurant, and it was the BEST pizza I have ever had!!! Even my hubby (who does not have Celiac) ate it and he said it tasted like "normal" pizza!   Right now they only offer a Medium ( 12" ) size Gluten Free Pizza. But they are hoping to expand their sizes into the 8", 10", and 16" in the future. AND in the coming months they will be adding additional Gluten Free pr

Protecting Yourself in Travel

First let me thank those of you who have responded to my blog! This is my first and only blog attempt and to find out that people are reading it is really quite exhilarating! The advice is quite welcome and interesting as well. I am currently in the UK and doing better on this trip than I have on any other travel in recent past. As an erstwhile traveler with 27 countries in my travelogue, I was very unhappy to experience serious outbreaks on my recent trips. My worst experience was in Chi

Gluten Free Beer

I have been invited to a group dinner out at a local restaurant. It's BYOB, and friends have announced they are bringing beer. Not wanting to be the odd one out, I decided I must obtain and bring gluten-free beer. So today I called 4 grocery stores and 10 liquor stores in an attempt to find gluten-free beer. I finally located multiple brands of it at Roots Market in Olney, Maryland, and Redbridge beer at Dugan's liquors in Pikesville, Maryland, as well as at Your Wine & Spirit Shoppe south o

Please Advise

Hello, This is my first time posting. I was recently tested for Celiac and the results were positive for the genes but negative for the antibodies. My doctor said I need to be off gluten for 6 months before the titers of antibodies fall. I discovered I might be gluten intolerant after going on an elimination diet. So, when I was tested I had been gluten free for about 6 weeks. I have been incredibly strict - cook only from scratch - veggies, rice etc. Is it possible my titers have fallen and t
