Wedding Report & Miso Question

So my earlier comment about my nephew's wedding was written yesterday but apparently I didn't actually publish it. I'm learning.   So it's now today, or the day after, and I'm pleased to report that everything went well. My brother, who is also celiac and a bit paranoid, talked to the chef directly and she put aside two plates for us and gave us what we could eat, which was a lot since mostly the meal was salads and fresh fruits.   My brother and I had a bit of a debate about whether we c

My Nephew's Wedding

I should be getting ready, we leave in an hour. But I wonder what I will be able to eat at the wedding (I have had my cereal to make sure I do not starve). They know my restrictions, but I am the least of their thoughts right now. I will report tomorrow on today...

My Life Story...

I don't remember much about my life before I was 3 years old. My mom passed away almost 9 years ago and my dad wasn't around much when I was a baby, so I have no one to ask if I had problems then. The first health problems I remember happened when I was 4 years old.I encountered a few traumatic events as a child. I know that any traumatic event can trigger Celiac, and I have wondered if that is what started it. When I was 3 my mom lost custody of my sister and I. We had been living in Misso

Another Gf Day

Well I think I managed to stay gluten-free at the church nusery today. Not always possible with all the kiddies eating their crackers and cookies...I came home, changed my crumb/saliva smeared clothes and scrubbed my hands. I made sure I didn't eat anything while I was there and didn't touch my mounth, but I still get nervous. I am glad it is only once a month. I am the Nursery Director at our church and when I started the job three years ago I was not gluten-free. Soon I will be gett5ing a

Another Day, Another Rice Cake Part 2

Wow, after reading a few blogs here and the suffering that so many celiacs have endured, I realize that I've had it easy!I have a very close family friend that had a mental breakdown when he was in his 50's. He was subsequently diagnosed with celiac disease so that's how I became familiar with the disease.Fast forward about 12 yrs. later and I happened to be talking to my uncle (mother's youngest brother) who, at the time, was about 54. He told me he had been losing weight by default. When I

Diagnosis & How We Got There

Well, I just had a nice long nap and I will try and finish this. When I went to the doctor's and stated how I was losing weight, they ran the typical blood tests that came back negative. Thereafter I would go in with more of a weight loss and be greeted with the same statement from the nurse - EVERY TIME. "I don't know why you are here - You Look Great". Needless to say my blood pressure would rise. And I would also say the same thing each time. " I am not dieting, I am not bulimic and I

I Am A Christian

Okay the title pretty much says it all. I am a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and I am not ashamed to admit that. Other than saying "God bless" at the end of almost each one of my posts, I try to keep my religious preferences off of the board. Not because I think they don't apply, but because I don't feel it is a place to discuss such issues. There are many people on the board from all walks of life, from all over the world and from many different religious (or non-religious) back-grounds

Still Trying To Figure This "blog" Thing Out...lol

Well I am just starting my blog, not used to doing a diary everyday, but hey this might be fun.I am just back from Skagway, Alaska where we keep our boat and go fishing every weekend for shrimp, crab, salmon and halibut. Our freezer is full for the winter with fish, so have no excuse again for hitting the beef too much. It was so windy there this weekend, that we couldn't get out in the boat. Don't like those 5' seas. So we played wharf rat for Saturday, and decided to come home early this m

Who I Am-do Any Of Us Really Know?

THIS WAS REALLY WRITTEN ON SATURDAY, BUT I DID NOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO ENTER IT UNTIL TODAY. THIS IS BLOG NUMBER ONE. I absolutely have NO idea what I am doing. I am totally computer illiterate. I sold on eBay for several years and figured out the basics, but this is Greek to me. What I hope to do is write down the LOOOOONG path to my diagnosis. After all I am 63 and probably have both feet on two bannana peels. LOL. I really don't have many hobbies anymore as my lack of energy put most in

Health History

I was born with both lungs collapsed and had pneumonia several times in childhood, then advanced to a lifetime of bouts of bronchitis. Because I was a skinny child, my parents decided that pure cream would put weight on me, little knowing that fat cells are formed in the first two years of life. Boy, do I have the fat cells LOL. The blister rash on my hands started as a child which I inherited from my Dad. Sometimes the blisters and itch would last just a week and then leave. I was always s

List Of Symptoms

Here is a list of symptoms associated with celiac disease that I put together to give to my doctor. I would like to know how many of the symptoms any of you have ( or had in the past if you a gluten-free now). I have 32 symptoms off this list, many of which taken separately could have been something else, but when you look at them together you can tell there is something really wrong! If you have anything to add to this list that would be great. Most of this was compiled from the aafp.org and ce

1st Store Trip, 6 Bucks For Bread?!?

Yesterday was my first trip to the store since being diagnosed. I need some quick foods for certain days of the week. While I love cooking, it's just not always practical to make every meal of every day...besides, I really wanted a bowl of cereal for breakfast instead of egg tacos. Trader Joe's has an okay selection of gluten-free Indian entrees, expensive, and I've never tried them, but hey...it replaces my Health Choice microwave meals. They have a really good wine selection too...so I got

Vegetarians Only Do It For Fun

One of my co-workers politely asked me, after declining a gyro, if I was a vegetarian. I told him about the "wheat allergy," and he asked me how my allergy manifests itself. I politely told him that I vomit--and that it's genetic. I told him about the rice bread and whatnot--and he was pretty cool with it. My take on vegetarians who have started a vegan/whatever (not purposely gluten-free) diet: they don't realize how lucky they are. Sure, I'm not missing most of that poisonous stuff, but the fa

Another Day, Another Rice Cake

It's Sunday. We just got back from worship services then eating at our favorite Indian food restaurant. Thankfully, most of their food is gluten-free. About the only thing we can't eat there is their wonderful flat bread (nan and roti). Oh, how we miss it!Lindylynn asked me what kind of dog Pearlie is. I'm not sure how to respond to her comment on my blog yet, so I'll just answer here. Pearlie is a Maltipoo (not a Bichon). A maltipoo is half Poodle, half Maltese. If the sire is a Maltese

John Scott pointed me to Wiki entry about the effect of diet on hookworm egg production: https://www.helminthictherapywiki.org/wiki/NA_incubation:_very_detailed_method_by_Alana#Promotion_of_egg_viability_by_dietary_manipulation

Nothing presently in my diet was mentioned in the article, but it does bring up the obvious point that my diet would naturally affect the health and wellness of the hookworms that live in my gut. Something to think about.

Yes, there are several gluten-free certifications out there (one is the GFCO), and the usual standard they claim is 10ppm, however, recent findings indicate that even the GFCO's higher standards may not ensure that foods they certify are gluten-free:
