Boyfriend sends text message to me at work last (rainy)Friday:
//Do you have a valid passport and can you get Monday off work?//
So, we fly to Cancun that night and have a great time! (His bday weekend) We crammed snorkeling, zip-line riding over the jungle canopy (I'd seen it on the travel channel and was dying to do it), rappeling, bicycling, kayaking, hiking, Mayan ruins, etc. all in one weekend with a long flight from CA to the Carribean!
Mexico is SO easy to eat gluten free! I ate lobst
No fried alligator for me! I really did want to try it, even tho it probably tastes just like chicken! My mother and I cooked our own Thanksgiving for Two. She was upset that I said I hate Thanksgiving. My brother is allergic to poultry, so it's not like I'm the only one who doesn't like this holiday.
So we made it "our" way. We loved it. My mom didn't have ANY bread! She ate a gluten-free muffin Kinnickick Frozen blueberry- and she liked it. She couldn't believe the texture was so
I woke up before the alarm this morning and a silly little poem shaped itself in my mind within a couple of minutes:
Back 2 Front,
Front 2 Back,
I'm hundred percent
celiac.
It rules my life in many ways,
Cuz getting glutened means pain for days.
Grocery shopping, dining out, or being a guest,
Are incredibly stressful events, at best.
Poke and pick,
Pick and poke,
Living a gluten free lifestyle is no joke!
Detective tried to track down a bakery that would create a gluten free cake, so we wouldn't have a box-cake or a frozen one. I finally helped him out with the name of one, and even that one said they needed 2 weeks notice!
What are they gonna do...order it from the midwest where all the good stuff comes from and then pass it off as theirs?
Gimmeabreak!
So I have brownies that my almost-sister made me. Great brownies, but still not a birthday cake.
I don't want to bake my own birthday cak
Latest find: Ian's Chicken Nuggets (at Henry's Market) YUM! I dip them in gluten-free bbq sauce
Latest flub: bf talked me into buying gluten-free cookies and when I ate them, I couldn't believe how good they were...so much so that I became suspicious, and--they were the regular kind. They had been right next to the Gluten-Free kind and somehow I must've put the wrong ones in the cart. ugh. I waited anxiously for the impending doom, but it was mild, no gastro symptoms, only back and leg pain
It was my first trip to New England and I went to Boston, New Hampshire, and Maine. Aside from paddling kayaks (boy, am I still strong!), riding the subway, railroad train, ferries, and water taxis, kissing by lighthouses, getting Witchy in Salem, Mass., and generally being a tourist, I ate at several gluten free establishments recommended by someone on the site. The results were so-so.
I ate at Legal Seafoods in the Boston Logan Airport and this was the BEST! They had gluten free menu and I
Hooray for chewing! I'm off the soft- food- only diet! Immediately had the detective transport me to the fair and crunched up some corn on the cob, a PINK'S hot dog (bunless), and I wanted a caramel apple, but detective warned it's too crunchy and too chewy. Oh, well.
Off prednasone and on 800 mg of ibuprofen, I got so dizzy at work. Now have to cut the pills in half so I can function.
Here's what I ate today: Gluten free and not terribly crunchy:Yogurt

While my relationship is still heaven on earth, my delectable detective has been nurturing me through my latest health slump. I don't need ear surgery (no fluid), but the specialist says I have TMJ, which is caused by stress and my high-strung personality. I do not grind my teeth (like many TMJ sufferers), however, I do clench my jaw when I'm stressed (I'd never really noticed until I made an emergency pitstop at a gas station only to find an "out of order" sign on the restroom door, and real
I was watching Men In Trees (rerun) and the Asian lady said her husband has a "gluten allergy" really casually right in the dialogue and it fit right in the storyline. It was SO COOL!! I realize most celiacs know it's not an allergy, but that is a word the general public understands.
Also, I went to Rubio's Baja Fresh and the guy at the counter pulled out an allergen list and told me to keep it, he brought out the marinade container (without me asking) to let me see the ingredients, then had
July was terrible for me last year and it's the same again this year. Where to begin...well, amazingly enough, I can make an entire LIST! 1. I didn't get the promotion at work. 2. They didn't throw out my duplicate traffic light camera ticket ($387) 3. My grandma wrote me a letter saying thanks for taking care of her during my visit, but no more gifts- even for Christmas, and btw I HATE YOUR MOTHER and I never want to see her again (My mom's moving to FL away from my gram in WI- gram not takin
Celiac Specialties sent me the cinnamon rolls finally and they are SPECTACULAR!! SOOO delicious! The tortillas (gluten-free option for flour tortillas) are ok, but defeat the point of a flour tortilla since they don't bend very easily...I made it into a quesadilla, but folding it into a burrito would probably be impossible.
I also LOVE the apple streudel from C.Specialties. Perfectly delectable.
Since I've been traveling and dating here are some other eating out experiences I've had-- no glut
They took second helpings! The Japanese Rice Coconut Pudding turned out fine. It looked and tasted like oatmeal with cinnamon in it. I guess, since oatmeal isn't something we get to eat, it was a happy coincidence. Although I did read about some type of oat that has a low enough level of gluten....
I have been dealing with somewhat of a dilemma. The detective calls himself finicky. He doesn't have the affinity for fresh fruit and veggies like I do (lots of men are that way, aren't they? Th
*Drum roll* Did she make a long weekend trip in Washington D.C. without getting glutened?NO.
Positives: there was a WHOLE FOODS where they had an omelette lady we took advantage of for breakfast and we bought stuff for picnicking! I ate at Joe Theisman's restaurant (salad and bunless roast beef) and it was FANTASTIC. So, we ate there the next night, and...glutened! But, I have to admit the house balsamic vinegrette dressing I tried this time looked suspect, and I dared to eat chocolate mousse
The Friday started off typically enough-had vitamins and organic corn flakes with raisins for breakfast and off to work. Played staff-vs-5th grade softball game. Staff won, saving the principal from having to spend Mon. morning on the roof. Now 5th graders must uphold their end of the bet by losing a recess. ANd no one got hurt (last year the 20-something 3rd grade teacher got a major knee injury during the game and had to have knee surgery and be out of work 3 months!)
Students left at 11:30
So, in the car in the parking lot at Dodger Stadium, I glance over to find my companion lean forward and remove a BIG gun from his belt area. WHA??? He told me that ANY law enforcement officer worth anything wears it ALL the time...could be recognized by the criminal element and targeted for retribution... I'm like, you've had that on EVERY time I've seen you? Yep. I hugged you and never felt it? Yep. I'm like, do you wear it on the plane? Yep. I wanted to ask WHY he was removing it for th
Red Robin has some salads that- get this- DON'T come with croutons! They are sprinkled with crunchy colorful scrumptious fried tortilla strips. I had the really good chicken Santa Fe, I think it's called. With the dressing. And I had the strawberry "freckled" lemonade. Dee-lish.
Then, less than a week later, I went again. Had the exact. same. thing. And- wham! Glutened again.
Must've been cross-contamination. Even though the salad doesn't come with naughty gluten-laden stuff, I still inform
I had a pretty nice dinner at The Ritz this weekend. I enjoyed the seafood appetizer with horseradish and shrimp sauce, the lobster salad, and the shrimp c%$#$tail. The lamb was ok. The mashed potatoes and veggies fine. The berries for dessert were fresh, but had a VANILLA WAFER stuck in there, so I only ate a few out of the other side. ALMOST perfect.
Plus, there had to be a person at the table who couldn't resist telling me how good my berries looked while he was downing his chocolate cake
My celiac support group was SHOCKED about Lawry's seasoning salt glutening me. They seemed in disbelief, so they looked it up in the celiac's gluten free product list and it wasn't listed in there! I can't believe I was right!
It's very nice how they have a book cart full of celiac and gluten free books for checkout. I checked out Against the Grain, which is supposed to be funny as well as informative.Bringing a dish for work breakfast Friday: deviled eggs with bacon and cheddar!
Bringing a
I had pudding and blueberries for breakfast and a grapefruit for lunch, so I was dying to get home and cook a steak after working til 6.
And NOW I know why I got glutened LAST time I had a steak because 2nite it DAWNED on me as I sprinkled Lawry's seasoning salt on it.
So, I ate it, because I was in denial about the Lawry's label since there were somewhat conflicting accounts on the boards about it.
And I am paying for it. So, I learned the hard way. Despite my life's mantra about learning f
Manana is the annual work luncheon (early for Teacher Appreciation Day) that I can partake in! Lots of Mexican food is gluten-free and I just chow down and hope/pray that none of it is cross-contaminated or made from gluten-marinated stuff.
And TEQUILA is always gluten-free so maybe some of that after work!

"Are you going to faint?", asked the nurse repeatedly, wide-eyed, after measuring the top # on my blood pressure at 87. Mine is often low-- genetics, and I've never been able t
I'm feeling the way I felt last summer (the bad summer where I got very thin and had to force myself to eat at 9PM if I hadn't eaten all day-kept inadvertently getting glutened and felt SO GOOD when I wasn't eating...became scared of food). I do recognize it, so it doesn't have power over me. It happened once last fall and I literally went out and bought a TON of Halloween candy and made myself eat a candybar a day (quick and sweet) and told myself I liked food.
It got into the 90 degrees yes
Even after having heard my diatribe on celiac, why does everyone always ask if I "can" eat peanuts when they see me eat pad thai?
Are you a workaholic if you stop getting paid at 3:30 and you have a date pick you up at work at 7:15PM?
Why do I sometimes miss my ex-bf even though he tried to strangle me and called me stupid (at church of all places)?
Why did I cry when my student got her first A ever on a math test? (I know that I was happy our hard work had paid off, since she came to our sc
"Is your clock ticking?" a 36 year old jobless man asked me the other night. (He is my male friend's female friend's ex-boyfriend...) WELL, that's the first time I've ever been asked that. I'm 31, and he didn't ask me that until I'd told him my age. Why on earth would he ask me that? Was he wondering if I was trying to scope out a potential sperm donor at the nightclub where we were? Did he infer, as he stared at me shaking my money maker to the vibrating hip hop beats, that my smile- logica
I've had a run of bad luck lately. I got a letter in the mail with a color photo of me in my car- singing. It's a traffic light camera photo of me not making a complete stop before a right turn on red. Cost: $385.
Went on a date with a guy who said he is in the FBI and it was nice, but the next day he text messaged me that he wanted to come over. I replied that I don't allow men to come to my home, and he called me, angry, telling me he can find out where I live.
Finally, yesterday, Frid
I don't drink coffee, eat fattening things like cheesecake/creme brulee, fast food, or much red meat.
But I DO claim sugar as my vice. After 10 years of teaching, I'm the same size, and colleagues often ask me how I do it. Here are some ideas as well as
Things I do to trim down for bikini season (my summer clothes are a size smaller than my winter ones- it's a midwestern thing, we're very season-oriented):
Make sure you're only eating until you're NOT HUNGRY anymore, then GET UP (I feel
