The Texas Roadhouse has a gluten-free menu. I went there tonight and they have quite a few things on the gluten-free menu. One puzzling thing is that you have to ask for your grilled meat to be prepared without "grill shortening". I can't imagine why their shortening would have gluten in it. I'll have to check that out.
I have a friend who has celiac disease and goes there often to have steak. I'm quite sure he hasn't thought to ask them to prepare it without the shortening, so I guess
I didn't like my mom's cornbread while I was growing up...actually, never liked anyone's cornbread. They probably all made it the same, all those Southern mothers.
Mom taught me to cook, which is a good thing, but I didn't like it. We had a conversation one night whilst in the kitchen preparing dinner.
Mom, "Mosaics, make the cornbread."
Me, "Ugh, I don't like making cornbread."
Mom, "Well, you need to learn to make it so that when you get married and have a family, you can
I might have mentioned somewhere in my blog that my husband and I have been fighting the IRS for about 8-10 years. The tax courts have ruled against us every step of the way, so we have to appeal to the Supreme Court. My husband has been doing a lot of the motion and brief writing himself to save money on attorney fees. Seriously, he's learned enough to become an attorney by now.
Anyway, he wrote the brief, actually it's called a Petition for Writ of Certiorari, and it's for my case. He
Ack!
I have a friend whose family is going through a terrible time. She has cancer for the second time, her youngest daughter has been diagnosed as bi-polar, her three y.o. son is out of control and won't behave, her husband won't help discipline the children. Seems the only one in the family without a major issue (other than living in such a chaotic environment), is the oldest daughter.
So, anyway, I was doing a google search about the link between bi-polar and celiac disease. Seems
So...my husband and I have been thinking about buying some land and becoming self-sufficent.
We've been looking at various properties since last fall and trying to decide what to do. We finally made an offer on an 80-acre property a few weeks ago. Our offer was rejected, so we thought, "Well, it just wasn't meant to be." But the owners of the property e-mailed us just a couple of days ago telling us they changed their mind and will now take our offer. So now we're in a quandary. Wha
Ack! I have got to stop eating like a pig!
My clothes are getting tight. I can't stand it. It doesn't help when everyone around me thinks I'm thin and smirk when I mention losing weight. I start thinking, "Well, maybe I'm not as fat as I think...yeah, in fact, I am lookin' gooood." Then I put my jeans on and try to button them. That's when reality sets in. I'm going to try to go back to eating low-carb. It's so hard because I love the carbs...chips, mashed potatoes, potatoes
My husband and I went to our first ever Republican Party dinner. It's not really my "thang", but we needed to go because my husband is considering running for Congress in 2008. We needed to do a "meet and greet".
Anyway, we had specified ahead of time that I needed a gluten-free meal. The person my husband talked to on the phone told us that one gluten-free meal had already been requested for someone else, so it would be no problem for me to have one, too. So when we found our table (the
Everyone got sick but me. My husband got sick and threw up all X-mas night. I was afraid it was something I cooked, but that couldn't have been it because no other family member or guest got sick. I had a little of everything and I didn't get sick. So then I was really worried that it was a virus and that I was going to get it. I hate throwing up worse than anything. I end up sleeping on the bathroom floor. There is something familiar and comforting about laying on a hard, cold, bathroom
...for parties, that is.
We went to a party with our fellow church members last night. It's always a pot luck and usually not a whole lot of gluten-free foods to choose from. Most of them know about my celiac problem and some of them actually make an effort to bring gluten-free foods, which is very nice of them. One lovely lady made a point of telling me that the dessert she brought was gluten-free - candy balls. It just so happens that another friend had told me that the lady had brou
You know what the coolest thing about being on the gluten-free diet has been for me so far? Not getting sick. I've been gluten-free for nearly three years now and have not had any cold or flu at all. I might have mentioned this previously in my blog, but it still amazes me. I don't know if it's because I'm off gluten, or because my kids are older and aren't bringing home all kinds of germs from their little friends, or because I've already had every cold virus there is...but whatever it is,
I like to have lunch with my friends at La Madeleine's, but since so much of their food is bread based, I usually have the same couple of things over and over, which is kind of a drag. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I used to get their mushroom soup every time it was the soup du jour. Oh, it is yummy!
After I got my diagnosis, when I questioned them, I was told by La Mad's employees that the tuna and chicken salad have bread crumbs in them, that the mushroom soup is thickened
I contacted Kimball Labs to find out how much their Celiac DNA tests are. They responded back:
Thank you for your inquiry. The list price for the Celiac Disease DNA Test
is $395. Patients who enclose payment with their sample receive a 10%
discount (check or credit card) bringing the price to $355.50. In addition,
we offer a family discount. After the first family member is tested at the
$355.50 rate, each additional family member (immediate and extended) is
entitled to the family
Even though I already know my children and I have celiac disease, I'm thinking about having a DNA test done on all of us. I think it will be helpful for my children to know where they and their future offspring stand with this disease and the possibilities of future generations inheriting it.
Here's the website for the lab I'm considering:

I think it's time for more pictures! I got a new car in June. It's a BMW Z4. I had a Z3 for about 10 years that I sold...on www.craigslist.com , believe it or not. It sold the first week to the first person who contacted me. Wow. Anyway, here's my new car. Ain't it purty?! It has lots of cool features and I'm enjoying it very much. Well, crud. I can't get the picture smaller so the whole car is there. Oh well, this part is pretty enough. ETA: Well, I guess I got it too small. C
My mom, who has celiac disease (and passed it on to her children) just found out today that she has Dupuytren's Contraction (dew-pwee-TRAWNS). Of course, I'm wondering if there is some connection between the two. I've been searching the net and found one other celiac site in which two people with celiac disease also have Dupuytren's. Otherwise, I haven't found any other information linking them.
I'd be glad to hear from anyone who has any info about that.
Here's a site that tells a li
We went to an out of town wedding this weekend. I was looking forward to some really good food, but was sadly disappointed. The first night we went out with a group of my husband's family to a supposedly very good restaurant - spent $80.00 on just my husband and myself. I had a salad with raspberry vinagrette, I could barely taste the dressing. Then a slab of walnut crusted salmon with a raspberry sauce. It was too much and pretty bland, so I didn't finish it. Then I had their flourless ch
It's a small thing, but I'm still bummed. I just found out that my favorite fish restaurant, The Flying Fish, puts beer in their hushpuppies.
I thought I had been so careful asking about the gluten and making sure there was no wheat in any of the food. I was assured there was not and have been happily eating there for a few months now. I had noticed that several times I was feeling not so great after eating, but since I had quizzed them about the food, I thought it must be something e
I don't understand my fellow celiac disease sufferers when they say that they're tempted to eat gluten, or that they just had to have a piece of cake, or a piece of bread. They say they know they'll suffer for it, but "it won't hurt to have just one piece", or "I just had to have it", etc.
What are they thinking? I'm beginning to think that some people just like to be miserable or have something to complain about.
I've gotta say that I am never tempted to eat gluten. Yes, I sometimes
I was so excited to discover that our local Thai restaurant, Samui Thai, is almost completely gluten-free. It's my new favorite place

We went there on Mother's Day and took my parents. There were six of us and four of us have celiac disease. Everything breaded was gluten-free, even the fried calamari! YUM! As far as I could tell, only things with soy sauce in them had gluten and they offered to make anything we wanted without soy sauce. It was wonderfu
This is quite upsetting. The longer I'm on the gluten-free diet, the more sensitive I'm getting. Is it because my system is no longer accustomed to compensating for the gluten influx, or is it just the progression of the disease? I guess I'll never know since I discovered my celiac disease before I suffered many symptoms.
Within the past several months I've noticed that when I get glutened my stomache starts to rumble shortly after I've eaten and then it's off to the toilet for me. I
Whew! I got here just in time to save my blog from dropping to the second page.
So...I've been telling my mom, who has had all kinds of intestinal problems and other celiac symptoms for years, that I think she has celiac disease. It stands to reason, does it not, that she would have it since two of her four children are confirmed CDers and one other has loads of symptoms, but hasn't been diagnosed?
She got tested last year with a blood test and her doctor said she didn't have it. I
We had our Christmas dinner on Monday the 26th this year. I am certain that I didn't have anything to eat that contained gluten, but I was sick all Monday night. The only thing questionable that I consumed was a Sam's Choice (Walmart brand) root beer. The only questionable ingredients on it's label are caramel coloring and natural flavoring. I have a call in to Walmart to find out if their root beer contains gluten or not. I really want to find out if I had a gluten episode or if it was jus
Is anybody out there in blogland!?
I had a good gluten-free Thanksgiving. No gluten contamination. Last year I got something, still haven't figured out what it was, but it ruined my trip to see Cirque du Soliel.
Some of my family members brought some glutened foods, but I avoided them and all was A-OK. My sausage dressing was excellent this year. Remind myself next year to grind up part of the rice bread (brown and white rice) in the food processor a couple of days before and let i
This Blog board has been pretty dead these past few weeks. Seems after the initial flurry of activity, we've run out of things to say and hardly any new entries are posted.About three weeks ago I went out to eat lunch with a friend at a place called Cafe Max. It's a very popular place with the business lunch crowd and serves soups and salads. I used to eat there years ago, but hadn't been in a long time...even before my diagnosis. I had the Ceasar salad and the seafood salad. I asked before
