Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Blogs

Well, This Is A First

I have decided to do a blog, never did one before and I am not sure I will keep up with it, but I will try. I doubt anyone will want to read it, but thats ok too I need to be able to think allowed right now and so this is it lol I was dx about 3-4 years ago. I had to find waht was wrong with me and make the Dr. do the tests to support my DX. Before that and now even I think he thought I was crazy. I was running to Dr to dr to find out why I wasnt feeling good. After all Celiac's are supposed

Tb Skin Tests

Just saw another blog on a positive TB skin test on someone with celiac/gluten sensitivity. Is there anyone out there that has gluten intolerance and has had a positive TB skin test? My skin test was positive upon returning to work (RN) after staying home with my children. Kerri

Sickness Du Jour

I was just thinking the other night, as I was laying in bed with horrible stomach pains, 'Is it the celiac disease or is it something else?"   So that makes me wonder if other celiacs always blame gluten when they are sick or do they consider that it might be something else. I know for a fact that I did not have any gluten that day. I ate at home all day and there is no gluten in my house. Well, except that recently my daughter bought my husband some pretzels for his B-day. He loves pret

Lawry's?

There seems to be some question amongst celiac sufferers as to whether Lawry's Seasoned Salt has gluten in it. I use the product often and, personally, have suffered no reaction from it.   Lawry's is a Unilever product and here's what they have to say:   "Some of the people in my family have food intolerances and food allergies, can you tell me which food allergens are in your products? Our product formulations and ingredients change from time to time; therefore we do not have a list which

The Ritz...almost Perfect

I had a pretty nice dinner at The Ritz this weekend. I enjoyed the seafood appetizer with horseradish and shrimp sauce, the lobster salad, and the shrimp c%$#$tail. The lamb was ok. The mashed potatoes and veggies fine. The berries for dessert were fresh, but had a VANILLA WAFER stuck in there, so I only ate a few out of the other side. ALMOST perfect. Plus, there had to be a person at the table who couldn't resist telling me how good my berries looked while he was downing his chocolate cake

Fooled The Experts

My celiac support group was SHOCKED about Lawry's seasoning salt glutening me. They seemed in disbelief, so they looked it up in the celiac's gluten free product list and it wasn't listed in there! I can't believe I was right! It's very nice how they have a book cart full of celiac and gluten free books for checkout. I checked out Against the Grain, which is supposed to be funny as well as informative.Bringing a dish for work breakfast Friday: deviled eggs with bacon and cheddar! Bringing a

Eieio Update

Well, we were working out a deal on the property that I told about in my EIEIO blog entry. We told them we needed to get a survey done. Then the owner's attorney e-mailed us and told us that they want a $38,000.00 non-refundable deposit that they get to keep if we don't close the deal in 45 days.   Uh, NO.   So they wrote back and said they are done negotiating.   The deal is off unless they change their mind and contact us again. Maybe it's for the best. I don't know.

Pancake Balls

One of our favorite restaurants is the local Indian Restaurant. We've been going there for many years and for most of those years I've been eating their "pancake balls". Well, that's not really what they're called. I don't know the real indian name, but they are like balls of pancake with a honey syrup, served warm. They aren't wonderful...mostly because they aren't chocolate , but it's nice to end the meal with a little sweet.   When I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I gave up the w

Texas Roadhouse Restaurant

The Texas Roadhouse has a gluten-free menu. I went there tonight and they have quite a few things on the gluten-free menu. One puzzling thing is that you have to ask for your grilled meat to be prepared without "grill shortening". I can't imagine why their shortening would have gluten in it. I'll have to check that out.   I have a friend who has celiac disease and goes there often to have steak. I'm quite sure he hasn't thought to ask them to prepare it without the shortening, so I guess

Hi From Nz And A Couple Of Queries Re Coeliac

Hi All   I'm new to being gluten free but not from knowing about my condition. I found out a couple of years back but did the denial thing ... until the effects were too noticeable. Started this Monday and am already feeling much better. Headaches are almost gone and funnily enough my back and neck ache has eased significantly. However, my heart palpitations, giddyness and rashes on my fingers are still here. It will take time I know. It is much easier than I thought at the moment but I

Doubting Thomas

Went to the doctors today for a general health check.   I did ask him if he could be 100% positive that I had coeliac, and he had to admit that he should've done a biopsy earlier on, as when I had the biopsy done it had been a whole year since I went gluten free. But he did mention that the blood results pointed to problems with gluten. He did say I had coeliac after the blood tests. It's on my records I guess, so I should leave it at that.   I guess today I am just being a doubting Thomas

Dentist Visit

I had my first dentist visit since going gluten-free. It went well. All I had done was a cleaning and I informed the hygienist when I got there that I was dx'd with celiac which meant that I can't tolerate gluten. After she got the puzzled look off her face she checked the ingredients on her supplies. There were a few suspect ones on the mouthwash and no ingredients listed on the floss. After consulting with the dentist it was decided that they wouldn't use floss and would polish my teeth w

Fed Up With Doctors

No wonder I can't move ahead in my life - something is always pulling me back!   I don't get it - not only did they miss my diagnosis for 20 years, apparently the "complete" hysterectomy that I had 22 years ago - wasn't complete! They told me they took "everything" out.   While doing the tests for the other problems I am dealing with at the moment they happened to find something that appears to be an ovary! So why give me breast cancer causing drugs for the last 20 years (HRT) if I never nee

Been A While

Yes it has been a while since I've blogged.   Not much has happened, just been working hard and trying to get on.   A couple points of interest this week:   1) a fellow worker looking over my shoulder and saying "you can't eat rice, it has gluten in it." So I proudly pointed out that I was eating sausage as well! She is just one of the mis-informed who should know better. She soon cottoned on and then said with a laugh "there must been oodles of gluten in the curry." This is one thi

Cornbread Heaven

I didn't like my mom's cornbread while I was growing up...actually, never liked anyone's cornbread. They probably all made it the same, all those Southern mothers.   Mom taught me to cook, which is a good thing, but I didn't like it. We had a conversation one night whilst in the kitchen preparing dinner.   Mom, "Mosaics, make the cornbread."   Me, "Ugh, I don't like making cornbread."   Mom, "Well, you need to learn to make it so that when you get married and have a family, you can

Myself 2 Blame

I had pudding and blueberries for breakfast and a grapefruit for lunch, so I was dying to get home and cook a steak after working til 6. And NOW I know why I got glutened LAST time I had a steak because 2nite it DAWNED on me as I sprinkled Lawry's seasoning salt on it. So, I ate it, because I was in denial about the Lawry's label since there were somewhat conflicting accounts on the boards about it. And I am paying for it. So, I learned the hard way. Despite my life's mantra about learning f

Cinco De Mayo=si, Si, Si!

Manana is the annual work luncheon (early for Teacher Appreciation Day) that I can partake in! Lots of Mexican food is gluten-free and I just chow down and hope/pray that none of it is cross-contaminated or made from gluten-marinated stuff. And TEQUILA is always gluten-free so maybe some of that after work! ********** "Are you going to faint?", asked the nurse repeatedly, wide-eyed, after measuring the top # on my blood pressure at 87. Food Supply

I've only been at this gluten-free 'diet' (or rather 'lifestyle') since April 7th. That's about three weeks. Last week was a challenge. I had extra appointments and evening events and skipped dinner a few nights because of them. There was food at a couple of the events, but I couldn't eat any of it. I was in too much of a rush to pack my own, so I just went without.   What a mistake. By the time the weekend came, I was ravenous for a square meal. All I could think about was eating meat.

Dietician Visit

Another milestone in the journey into celiac world...   Last week I visited the dietician as part of my post-diagnosis follow-up. (I was diagnosed on 4/6 of this year.)   I was lucky. The dietician didn't know a thing about celiac. I knew more than she did just by doing research on this site and others and by shopping a couple of times for gluten-free food. The reason I was lucky was that she had a student dietician who just happened to be working with her today who was also a celiac! Du

I read a research article today about how hookworms are being considered as a standard of care of colitis. Dunno about them used for obesity treatment though. The first thing I did once I figured out I wasn't reacting to gluten anymore was to head for the bakery isle. It had been 13 years..
