As I read stories of the new celiacs and the problems of finding out the answers to their questions, I am finding myself wanting to help in anyway that I can. This is a disease that is more than just eliminating gluten from your diet. There is so much more that is still unknown about this disease. Even if you leave gluten out as I did, I still remained very sick. I found out about a clinic in Chapel Hill, N.C., and made an appointment. Here they treat the whole person, not by giving you another pill, but by testing where you are sensitive in other foods as well. After removing these foods, along with the foods containing gluten, I noticed a remarkable improvement. This along with supplements, such as protein shakes, vitamins that my body was in need of improving, and most important taking myself off the hook of being perfect,(I am still working on this one),I am getting better, in baby steps. Stress is a part of our lives. Learning how to cope with your stress is so important, and easier said than done. I am far from being in good health, but I have come a very long way from where I was. I have good days and bad days. Today is a bad day. The 100 degree heat does not help. I have lost my voice, so it is hot tea and staying inside. Please do not hesitate to send me your story. How very kind of you to share. I am 2 1/2 weeks into the disease and so greatful for all your help. Stress I am sure brought on my Celiac Disease and has added to my feeling dreadful. Luckily my parents are now both out of the hospital after 4 weeks each and finally now in the same long term care facility. Then they were in 2 different long term care facilities in 2 different states for several weeks. Now I hope they will be able to move into an assisted living facility in August. Daddy has a long term illness so my stress will continue I am afraid. I immediately started on the gluten free diet and have been very good about it. I stopped wearing lipstick so I really do look awful!! I must research to see what brand I can wear. I am finding that I am really weak in the morning and feel nauseated and have headaches until around 2pm when I finally feel better. I have been eating fresh fruit, almonds and Brown Cow plain yogurt every morning but feel I am a little better if I eat some peanut butter. Perhaps I need more protein. After the initial 18 pound weight loss--I had been gaining weight over the past year which is something I have never done before-- I seem to have leveled off--flucuating 2-3 pounds either way. I thought I would have continued to loose weight. I would be happy if I lost another 5 pounds to get back to where I used to be but do not want to risk my health at this point. Are you concerned about using Aveeno cream? I love it but it has oatmeal in it so I have stopped using it. After a long day of 3 doctor appointments for my Father, my husband urged me to go to Outback Steakhouse for a gluten free dinner. My first time out. I really did not want to go but he has been so supportive that I felt I should. I order a baked potato that was not cut open and plain lamb chop and a lettuce salad and during dinner I became very weak, horrible headache and just "crummy" feeling. I felt sorry for my husband as he was trying to be so supportive but I guess it is just way to soon to chance anything. I had been specific that I was a brand new Celiac and they were very supportive at the restaurant. Any advice? Thanks for listening.

I have just started to feel a little better and am keeping a very strict diet. I have not been out to eat since the one and only time to Outbeack and my June 11th posting. Today I went to the dentist for my regular cleaning and I did take 4 tablets of amoxicilian as I have always done it in the past for my mytral valve prolapse even though the dentist says the regulations not longer say you have to premedicate. I told them about my new diagnosis of Celiac and asked if the cleaning products were safe. They checked but could not find any information. Well, as I left the office the awful headache, face swelling--it doesn't appear to swell on the outside but I feel like it does inside--funny tummy, and rocky feeling started. So I have been trying to find some information about Celiac, gluten and dentristy. Or could it be the antibiotic I took? 3 hours and the symptoms are still here.

I found out not only do I need to stay on a gluten free diet, but I had more test done to check for other foods I might be sensitive to as well. The only meat I can eat is chicken. The only seafoods are shrimp, clams, crabmeat, tuna, anf grouper, which is a white meat fish. I have been on a very strict diet since these last test were done. For protein, I have protein shakes made for gluten free Whey, a powder, and add strawberries or blueberries. I also use Nu Stevia, a plant based calorie free sweetener in my shakes, green tea, yogurt, and gluten free cererals. Even on a gluten free diet, I was still so sick until I had these extra test done. Let me know if you would like to know more about this. I would stay away from the red meat for now. Yes stress plays a Big part in our health. Do try to take care of yourself. I will send more later. Godspeed, Littlebit

The thing with restaurants is that there's no 100% guarantee of cross-contamination.
Maybe you can try to look for a restaurant that serves only gluten free foods. Best of luck!

Hi, I was diagnosed on July 2nd and have been on a wheat-free, milk-free and legume-free diet ever since. However, the symptoms persist and seem to have worsen. Could it be that I can now not have red meat? It all seems so sudden that one day I could eat nearly everything, and now that I am on this diet, I seem to not be able to eat anything. I am scheduled for testing for food allergies, so I am hoping this will help provide some insight. I also seem to be have (new for me) trouble with raw fruits and veggies. Can you provide any insight? I appreciate any input you can offer!
