Day Three Down... Lots More To Go...

So I was diagnosed with Celiac... on Thursday. Interesting. I had a feeling but put it off... I had the common mentality that if I wasn't diagnosed then gluten couldn't hurt me. But I always feel like crap. My grandmother had Celiac and was not diagnosed until it was much too late. I've seen what this can do-- and it's scary. I guess that can be good (not in a mean way) but at least since I watched someone go through it who didn't have a choice-- someone who ate bread to calm her stomach when it was really the bread making it worse-- I have a choice. I can make it better. I know I wont cheat and eat gluten. I will want to. It will be hard. But I wont. I've made it three days... what's one more? And one more after that? One day at a time. Plus-- the side effects are definitely not worth the enjoyment of consumption. I guess thats what freaks me out the most. It's not that it bothers me today. It's not that it will bother me tomorrow... but for the rest of my life I will have to focus on this and be so careful...

How do you overcome these thoughts? I'm not really upset about it... I didn't cry... but I don't really know how I feel either. It feels as though I'm in a daze and zoned out. I feel... weird. What do I do to make myself understand what truly lies ahead of me? And how do I make others understand? How do I memorize what to look for on labels and know where I can eat out? I can't let this control my life... I want to travel, I want to succeed, I want to live... but I guess in a way, it will have more control than I do. I haven't been this emo in a long time... it doesn't sound like me... wow...

I know how you feel.....I feel the same as you! But, considering how sickly we have felt for so long, personally speaking I'm trying my best each day to improve/avoid the foods I must not eat. Some days I do, some days I don't give a care! BUT, each day is better........I guess when we look back at our lives, it took a long time to get to this point....it will take us some time to understand the foods/where to buy, and which foods are tolerable to us....hopefully, some we will enjoy. One of my concerns was breakfast, I now found Van's Waffles, egg, soy, gluten free at Krogers! They are fairly good! So this is a start........your not alone!

I have been eating gluten free for 4 months it has helps when your family is supportive and finding a Celiac group to join is good. I do a lot of info surfing on the net so I can be better informed. I just back from vacation we went ot Calif. for 10 days and traveled to Florida for 6 days. I was very nervous about the trip and what I could eat so I made a lot of list as to what resturants I could eat at and driving to Florida I took cheese, lunch meat and other goodies just in case I couldn't find some place. I only got sick once and all in all it helped to plan ahead. Good luck I still have my days where I feel sorry for myself and want to eat something because I get frustrated but I don't because I can't and I know that my family needs me to be around for a long time. I found a great cook book called "You won't believe it's Gluten-Free" by Roben Ryberg. So if you want onion rings, etc... you can still have them! Aslo Bob's Red Mill has a good pizza crust. We all have bad days but hang in there your not alone!
