Starting From The Beginning

I'm the lucky one in this crowd, no doubt about it. I had a baby and after three month of diarrhea the Dr. quickly diagnosed me as being allergic to gluten...that was 5 days ago. 3 months of suffering sounds like nothing compared to the other stories out there....I have some liver damage, but that will heal with time! Where do I go from here? Well, I feel incredible. 5 days sans gluten has given me this great energy boost and I didn't take a nap yesterday and I stayed awake until 10:30...I don't remember the last time I was able to do that! What to look forward to?Shopping...we're going to all the healthfood stores in the area to trade in our frozen pizzas and frozen waffles for gluten-free breakfast cereals and entrees. Crazy. I've called so many food manufacturers this week checking on ingredients.I'm happy because Fritos, Gatorade, marshmallows, popcorn, tapioca, and McD's Frenchfries are all on the okay-list.I'm depressed beacuse I'll never eat another Taco Bell taco again...My Grandmother's Swedish cookie recipes are completely out of the question.I'm starting at the very beginning and I'm overwhelmed.Cheers,~Erin

Hi

Sounds like your on the right track, keep up the good work, and you will soon be an expert in gluten-free foods.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease years ago, and spent 99% of those in denial, and just this week started taking a stand against gluten, so hopefully in a month or so I will be able to sleep again, go through the day without a cat nap, and have some energy back.

I wish you all the best in your new diet. Sounds like you will be just fine.

Hi, and welcome!
Oh, honey, it's all so new but you'll find your way. My suggestion to any new diagnosis is read everything and take bits of each and incorporate them into your own lifestyle. The health food stores and advertised gluten-free foods are a great start. Just keep an open mind and remind yourself ahead of time they probably won't taste like the "real" thing, and that different can still be good. I now eat probably 95% mainstream items, after careful scouring of the manufacturers ingredients and the approved list on this and other sites. It's less expensive, and less intrusive to me emotionally. I feel more "normal".
What type of liver problems did you develop? My sister (+symtoms but -biopsies) has been in and out of liver failure, and I have been self diagnosing biliary stones or pancreatitis (as a nurse I should know better than to self diagnosis...especially since my ovarian cyst starts first grade next month!). Let me know about your symptoms.
Again, keep up the good work and health (and congrats on the baby!)
