For the TH1 vs TH2 branches of the immune system, here are a few links. It's not simple and the articles explain it better than I will. The idea is that the immune system gets out of balance, but it can be different in different people. Herbs that work for a TH1 person will make a TH2 person sicker.

Skylark, I just found this entry you posted. I have a friend with Hashimoto's who recently asked me whether my celiac is a TH1 or TH2-dominant disease. I keep getting sick, so she was helpfully suggesting I should know whether, say, echinacea is going to do more harm or good! My mind was blown – here was something that no doctor had ever breathed a word of to me, though she explained how it's directly related to autoimmune disorders. Do you know if celiac is generally a TH1 disease (like IBD, Hashimoto's, MS, type 1 diabetes) or more a TH2 disease (like lupus, asthma, allergies)? Just based on that short list, which is in one of the articles you linked, it *sounds* much more TH1. But I have also seen that every person should test to find out individual results. Or in the case of celiac, is gluten the only thing we need to worry about (as doctors told me, assuming no additional disorders or allergies)? I'd also heard that celiac is unique in that we've identified the exact trigger, that being gluten – didn't know if that's exactly what applies here. I sure hope this comment makes sense. :)

Autoimmune illnesses are supposedly usually TH1 dominant. That doesn't explain my asthma though!
