Birthdays Are A Pain

So my brother turns 8 this month and I was pretty excited. Until I realized I'd be expected to bake his cake like I always have. It's not really a problem, but it's just depressing. Obviously mom doesn't want it to be gluten free because she thinks people will notice. No offense to my mother but I have mastered the gluten free baking technique. They wouldn't know. Why do I know this? Because my mom doesn't even notice ;)

Anyway, I have to bake a brownie cake and then ice it and it's going to look awesome (I may post a picture when it is done) but the whole time I will be paranoid of getting glutened. Or falling into temptation.

On top of this, my brother's party is at a pizza place! So exciting right?? Ha. And the snackies? Oh there will be things like pretzels and cookies and some things I can eat, but the little gluten covered hands will be all over everything...so that's not happening.

 

We are also celebrating MY birthday this upcoming weekend even though my birthday is a month away. I leave for college though so we are having our family shindig early. I'm getting cupcakes from this amazing little place downtown called Oh Snap! And they have been so good to me:) But I can't be too happy because all my family members are in the background complaining.

 

Does gluten free food really taste that bad? I mean...I don't really remember what some normal stuff tastes like, but I'm a really picky eater so if it was gross I'm pretty sure I'd know. Why are "normal" people (I call them muggles for my enjoyment) so against eating gluten free food? It's not that bad!

I bake GF cakes and no one can tell the difference! The only complaint that I get from my daughter is "Whaaat! You put raisins in apple cinnamon cupcakes?"

I refuse to bake any gluten anything anymore. It's not worth the risk of getting glutened. I can't believe your mom isn't supporting you more. Let her make the cake (or buy it from Costco they are decent and cheap) as your brother's friends won't care about quality.

Maybe she's freaked about the extra cost of flour?

By the way, Betty Crocker's GF Brownie mix rate #1 over other gluten mixes! Google it!

Bring your own snacks to the party. Whatever they'll serve will be yucky as they typically don't get five stars for food! Bring one of those little cupcakes too or make them yourself. I bake and freeze. Humm....time to defrost a lemon blueberry muffin!

Thanks for your reply! I did end up putting cake duty on her. I just don't want to deal with all of that hassle and risk making myself sick since I've been doing so well lately.

Betty Crocker's gluten free desserts are to die for and make so so unbelievably happy! My whole family likes them, but yet I still get complaints simply because of the "gluten-free" label. It just doesn't make any sense!

As a gluten eater, honestly, if it's prepared well I cannot tell the difference. I had a friend who had a baking business, and I ate her dairy-free, wheat-free cookies (before I even know what gluten was) a few years ago. BEST COOKIES I'VE EVER HAD! bar none! So I don't really get the association with "gluten-free" being "gross" (I think I have been fortunate in this regard? lol). When my IBS problems started, I got some Namaste Foods brownie mix on a whim. My family and I ate them, we are all gluten eaters but my family is very picky about things that seem 'off' and yet they thoroughly enjoyed them. They were even better than the normal brownies I bake. My friends, also gluten eaters, wolfed them down. They wanted me to make them again! Maybe this is a rare point-of-view in a gluten eater, but I've fortunately had good experiences with gf food so that is likely what shapes my view. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for sharing Orange! It's nice to hear that there are some gluten eaters out there who can't tell the difference and aren't picky for no reason whatsoever. My family I think is just being prejudiced to anything besides the "norm"

This is a terrible idea lol but you should "sneak" in a delicious gluten-free treat (masqueraded as gluten) and then after they comment on how delicious it is tell them that it is in fact gluten-free. xD Sometimes we can have subtle biases. Since I did not grow up eating pork (and actually grew up in a Muslim family, so we weren't even really "allowed" to) I always associated it as something that wasn't very appetizing. By mistake I ended up eating a pork sausage. And realized the error of my ways!

I actually think thats why some GF labeling is so small, because people may think it is gross! Lil do they know they are eating stuff that is gluten free all the time, they just don't have to think about it. Your mom eats Gluten free stuff, she just doesn't know it!

My Older daughter wouldn't try my homemade gluten free buns. One day, I coached my 9 year-old-daughter through making them. When the older daughter heard that her younger sister made them, she knew she had to try them and be a good sport besides. From that day on my older daughter ate the gluten free items and liked them.
