Don't take my strawberries! (Are Strawberries Gluten-Free when Grown in Wheat Straw?)

Kimberly McGowan

I have been reading articles that say that people with celiac shouldn't consume strawberries due to the fact that they are grown in straw. I picked strawberries with my children yesterday and I asked the local grower what type of straw they used and sure enough it was wheat straw. I have eaten strawberries and had not had a reaction, but after knowing this, I didn't eat any of the ones that we picked. I intend to look into this situation and I will keep you posted as to what I find out.

It is, but I think what is ridiculous is the prevalence of gluten/wheat is everything from the additives that are included in food that come from gluten source (that legally doesn't have to be declared), through to the inclusion of gluten in hair care products, etc.

What is the obsession with gluten? Why are our manufacturers making if so hard for us to escape it. When did the world get obsessed about shoving gluten into every last bloomin thing that we eat or use?

It's like some sort of whacky addiction.

I personally don't think anyone should have gluten in their diet. Lots of people eat wheat/grains/gluten with no digestive issue but that does not mean that they are impacting in some other way. Wheat/Rye/Barley are grass. Our digestive systems are not designed to digest grass. Even cows/goats/horse have numerous stomachs/completely different digestive enzymes to accomodate grass-based diet.

I just think so many health problems stem from gluten in the diet and people either a) don't want the truth; b) don't want to change their diets; c) manufacturers don't want to lose the cheap and cheerful filler that's helping them pump out poor quality products.

IMO I Agree with this, gluten and grains are not meant for humans, and we should follow the paleolithic (Paleo) diet of our ancestors for better health.
There are some points here your right on, it is addictive and many of us getting off it for celiac have suffered withdrawal symptoms very much like trying to get off drugs. And it is often used as a cheap filler for many products, there are some other things to consider, the vitamins and nutrients in it have been found to help with various aspects of hair care products in skin products....I sorta jokingly compare this to animals rolling around in grass sometimes.
