Wheat and durum

Hi everyone

I am new to this forum.

I got my blood tests done . It shows I am allergic to wheat but not to durum. Not even to gliadin. If anyone knows about it please explain. It's very confusing. Because wheat and durum has same proteins. Is it possible both have different DNA. And possible it is true?

Johny, we need some clarification. What kind of testing did you have done? Was this for allergies or antibodies that would be associated with Celiac Disease?

Hi

I had FST test done. It shows I am reacting to wheat , rice ,corn, but not durum more. How accurate these tests are. It's called food sensitivities test. It's been almost 2 months I am not getting better. Associated with celiac disease.

First of all, Celiac Disease is not an allergy. A FST is pretty worthless for diagnosing Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease is an autoimmune condition in which the body is triggered to attack the lining of the small bowel in response to the ingestion of gluten.

Second, the FST is often very unhelpful when it comes to identifying food allergies. There are a number of reasons for this. If you take samples from the same blood draw and send them to different labs for analysis you will typically get widely varying results. There is also typically poor correlation between results of the testing and actual symptoms. There are typically a lot of false positives and negatives. I encourage you to google what I am saying. I have had both the blood FST and the skin prick allergy testing and they proved to not be any real help.

What you really need is to have a Celiac panel done which tests for antibodies related to Celiac Disease. If they are positive you may also be asked to have an endoscopy and biopsy done of the small bowel lining in order to check for damage to the "villi" of the small bowel lining.

Thanks for your response. I have had biopsy done and waiting for reports. But about 4 years ago I was told by GI from blood test that I have celiacs. He advised not to biopsy because of risk of perforation. I been off gluten for 4 years. Was better but now suddenly started feeling worse. Now I have done biopsy and waiting for results. Thanks for your input. That FST shows IgG reaction.

Celiac testing is invalid when people have already been eating gluten-free.

Is it possible that you are getting cross contamination? Is it possible you have developed other food intolerances/allergies or another autoimmune disease. All this is very common with Celiac Disease.

Hi

I don't know how to find this. All my blood reports are normal except IGA. That's it through the roof. Other blood reports are fine. Those don't show anything. It could be because of cross Contamination. I have stopped everything except certified gluten-free . As you said prick test is useless. I havent done that yet.

I'm not sure the FST is any better than the prick test for determining food allergies. If the FST included antibody testing specific for celiac disease then it would be helpful for that.

I would suggest you start keeping a food diary in order to track down correlations between what you eat and symptoms.

That FST test is IgG antibody test. That's IgG antibody reaction to those foods. That's what it says .

For Celiac Disease the key antibody is IgA/TTG I believe. I would encourage you to ask for a true Celiac panel blood test but it would only be valid if you were eating significant amounts of gluten daily for 4-6 weeks.

Back to your original question, I believe that testing positive for wheat but not Durum reflects the unreliability of food allergy testing in general. Durum is simply a variety of wheat as is bulgur and kamut and others. I certainly would not use the results of a food allergy test to assume you can safely eat some particular variety of wheat if you have Celiac Disease.

I am not going to eat durum for sure. Because I believer wheat and durum is same . They have same proteins. But this raises questions about the FST  IgG food sensitivities test reliability. It even shows sensitivity to rice. Even I been eating rice and not feeling any symptoms.

Exactly my point. There often is a wide discrepancy between food allergen testing results and actual experience.

But now when I know rice trigger report I can't swallow rice. It freaks me out.

One more thing I want to share about FST report. Wheat and rye are the worst for gluten. And it shows rye safe in green and wheat yellow in border line when it showed durum safe in green zone. I just can not believe about this. This is what bothering me to trust this FST report . But at the same time this report got stuck in my throat and neither can swallow more throw out.
