Constipation And Celiac Diet

Is there anyone out there who has been on the gluten-free diet a long time and now has problems with constipation? If so what do you do for it? I am unsure of Laxatives, they may or may not be glutten free. I need help, I am tired of being plugged up. I'd rather go back to the loose bowel thing. Can anyone help me? Thanks Dan

Nope, haven't had any experience with that. Check out the forums, though, you may be able to find some info on it there.

I would imagine that you don't eat enough roughage.
Celiacs don't just eat meat, beans, and nuts.
We have problems absorbing vitamins from foods, so we need lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits.
Most men I know don't eat many vegetables at all. Lettuce, corn, and french fries don't count.
Boil some frozen edamame, real pineapple, broccoli, etc. Try things you've never tried before.
Good luck.

Hi Dan,
I have been on the gluten-free diet for yrs. and what I do is I take Cascara Sagrada. It is a herb that helps to rebuild the colon muscle. In the begining I would take like 6 a day. And now I take one at night and once in awhile I have to take 2. It is like taking you colon to the gym. It exercises it. I also take magnesium because it helps also but it is not enought for me. And acidophilus is something we also need to keep the healthy flora in the gut. But the Cascara is what will make you go. Get it at the health food store and give it a try. You can read about it in any herb book. I am a Homeopath so I know about all these natural thing you can use. Bernetta

Dan, it becomes quite a problem, when your diet is mostly rice.
But take comfort , there is a great herb blend by" Solaray"
the name is Venous blend SP-32,Aloe- witch Hazel
It is a stool softer , I take two capsules 3 times a day .
Give yourself a little help by having a small fruit salad
in the morning, trust me you will feel alot better

Thanks. I take the acidophilus but I will try the Cascara Sagrada. This diet is so annoying. Thank you for the advise. Dan

I do eat a lot of fruit and try to have a salad each day. I'm a fruit nut thank God. I have been watching my bread intake, actually I have not had any bread for about two months. When I make the gluten-free bread in the machine it ends up going bad in the fridge so I just quit making it. I like the Bobs Red Mill mix. Just not much of a bread eater. Thank you for the advise. Sure is a lot to staying alive on this Celiac Disease. Thanks Dan
