Hello!

Hi! Welcome to my blog. My screen name is mytummyhurts, but my real name is Abby, I am 26.I was diagnosed with celiac disease last October. I have basically been gluten free for a few months now. But honestly, I'm still getting used to all the ingredients and I think I still make mistakes. I also need to buckle down and research all my beauty products, etc. I had been feeling pretty good up until a few days ago. But the past few days I've started feeling kind of sick again. This morning I felt bad, but at least I didn't barf or anything. I'm wondering though if my current problem may be something like blood sugar, because if I go a while without food or if I get too hungry that's when I really start to feel sick.Anyways, I just wanted to start my blog. Hopefully it won't be too boring!

Hi

Glad to hear your tummy doesn't hurt anymore, I can sure remember those days. Although I am not as diligent as to my gluten intake, I have to say I don't have those bloated stomach problems anymore and looking like I am 5 months pregnant.

I am wondering if you are looking for gluten-free beauty products because you react to gluten on your skin, because I don't seem to and I am wondering if I need to be using gluten-free beauty products just to be on the safe side. I didn't think the gluten in the beauty products permeated the skin to cause any villi problems, or am I wrong.

Glad to hear your feeling better, keep up the good work.

P.S.

I just read my hair conditioner bottle too, and the first ingredient in it stated "water extract of barley"....GREAT. I buy my hair products at the Health Food Store..Natures Path products.

I really am interested to know if I need to be concerned about this.

Thanks

Deb

I don't know if this reply is going to be e-mailed to you or not. I'm still getting used to this blog thing.

I'm going to go gluten free on every product that may even possibly get near my mouth. I haven't had any skin issues yet. But I've seen some people on here who said that after they were gluten-free for a while they became sensitive to products that just go on the skin. The reason I'm going to make sure these are gluten free is because I've noticed many ways that things like lotions, makeup, etc can make it into my system. For example, I put my makeup on with my fingers and, while I do wash my hands afterwards, I find that some is left under my fingernails and then I bite my fingernails (I know, a nasty habit).

Also, I use lotion many times throughout the day at work and notice myself a few minutes after applying eating things like grapes or some type of food that goes from hand to mouth.

So, I just want to be cautious and make sure that I won't gluten in anyway at all.

I'm so sorry...I don't know how my tag line got added to the end of someone else's post! I'm new at this blog thing, too, and was just trying to add my 2cents worth.
I agree it's probably a good idea to play it safe with any products we put on our bodies. I don't know if it coincidental or not, but even the smell of lotions and such with lemongrass makes me nauseated. (or I'm just a freak :P in addition to being a rude blogger!)

Don't worry about it. It will take a while for us all to get used to how this blogging stuff works. :)

I don't think that gluten can hurt a celiac if it's not ingested. After all, the gluten works on the small intestines so if it isn't put into the small intestines, how could it do any damage?

However, I do have a celiac disease friend that has all kinds of skin problems (including dermatitis herpetiformis). IMO, his skin allergies stem from the gluten that he ingests...not from the gluten he touches.

You do have a good point about getting contaminated by getting it under your fingernails, then eating something with your fingers, though.

A lot of people on this board have said that just putting something with gluten on it on their skin can affect them with skin problems. I have not had that, but I'm refering to ingesting, like putting lotion on and then eating peanuts or shampooing in the shower and having some of it get in your mouth.
