Sickness Du Jour

Mosaics

I was just thinking the other night, as I was laying in bed with horrible stomach pains, 'Is it the celiac disease or is it something else?"

Celiac.com Sponsor (A13):

So that makes me wonder if other celiacs always blame gluten when they are sick or do they consider that it might be something else. I know for a fact that I did not have any gluten that day. I ate at home all day and there is no gluten in my house. Well, except that recently my daughter bought my husband some pretzels for his B-day. He loves pretzels, but I never buy them because of the gluten. Anyway, I didn't eat them or get near them, so they are not the culprit.

I felt awful that night. My stomach woke me up with waves of pain. I eventually got back to sleep, but I had some "intestinal problems" in the morning.

So, what was it? I've had those pains before, but I've always attributed them to accidental glutenizing. But, I wonder...could it be something else? Am I intolerant of another food? Is it residual damage from past gluten? Was it a bug?

And my SIL called me the other night to ask me about Jell-O brand instant vanilla pudding. She had made a dessert with that and my brother, who has celiac disease and gets immediate ill effects from it, was feeling bad. Was he feeling bad because of gluten or was it something else? I checked on Jell-O's website and as far as I can tell, the pudding is gluten-free. My brother is convinced there was gluten in it, so that's another thing that he won't eat anymore.

I was just diagnosed 6 days ago, and already I know what you mean! I was feeling a little light headed tonight and wondered if I had eaten something wrong. I was brave enough to try eating out for the first time since the DX(Carraba's has a gluten-free menu) but wondered if maybe I wasn't supposed to have the salad dressing. The gluten-free menu doesn't say not to...just to ask for salad without croutons & for it to be mixed in a separate bowl. Since the only digestive symptom I've had is weight loss I guess I won't know about the salad dressing, but I can already tell I'm going to wonder every time I feel weird or ill. Boy that bread looked good!! At least my husband and son didn't tell me how delicious it was.
