Hi

Celiac.com Sponsor (A13):
Well I'm new at this, my first time and I'm not sure if I doing this right ....

My kids would get a kick out of this if they knew I was writing a blog...

I have just been diagnosed like so many of you.

I'm learning, and getting a bit tired of not getting a straight answer...

I'm trying to find out what products are safe.

I think I have the food thing down pat, but struggling with the shampoo, makeup,

hair dye stuff. anyone have any suggestions.

Unless one is ingesting make-up, shampoo, etc., it should not be an issue. Gluten damages the intestines of a person with celiac disease. It cannot damage the intestines unless it gets into the intestines. It will not soak through one's skin into the body. Personally, I do not check the ingredients of things I don't eat and I do not have any reaction to gluten touching my skin. I don't know any person with celiac disease who does.

However, I do have a friend with celiac disease who has a lot of skin problems. If he eats gluten he has a problem with dermatitis herpetiformis, but he also has allergies to other substances which cause his skin problems.

A lot of the Pantene product's contain wheat protein's
Skin irritation is how it affected me, and I have no other allergies
to blame it on. It was early in my diagnosis when we discovered
where it was coming from...so not sure if there were any other
symptoms or not :)

Well, Donna Mae, I guess you won't get a straight answer here either. You got two conflicting answers right off the bat. If you are worried about gluten in non-food items, and you can't tell from the ingredients labels, then I would suggest calling the manufacturer directly to find out about any product that you want to use.

Hi Mosaics:
Thanks for the information. Sorry it's taken me a while to figure out how to reply lol...
I have been doing hours of research... my gastroenterologist, told me whatever you "put in or on your body", will affect you. He said that it's the same as a birth controle patch or a smokers patch, it does get into your body.

Since I have been on the gluten free diet, I am unable to use any of my makeup. I have had reactions to just about everything I'm using. Reading the lables, and calling the manufactures are wearing me down...

I emailed Bare Escentuals: and was told that the entire line was gluten free. After several emails and phone calls,
finally: I hope this can help someone else.
I bought their products to find out that I had reactions to the Bare Escentuals lip gloss, and mascara and the cream, in the kit of Bare Minerals.
The Minerals line has some products that are gluten free, not the Bare Escentuals products.
Here is what they told me.
All gluten free:
-Bare MInerals Foundation
-Bare Minerals Blushes
-Bare Minerals Eyeshadows, Glimpses, Glimmers
-Bare Minerasl Multi-Tasking Bisques
-Bare Minerals Buxom lip gloss.
-Bare Minerals Mascara

I can tell you first hand that products that you put on your body can affect you, my daughter also has just been diagnosed with Celiac, and had her hair dyed at the salon, by the end of the day, we could not reconize her.
Her head had trippled the size, her eyes were both swollen shut, blister all over her head...sorry for the ditails, but not pretty. It was an all natural product ( wheat ).....

After this we are so worried about all products being safe and 100% gluten free.
Well, a long winded reply, but that's the reason I was hoping anyone out there knew for sure what hair products were safe, esp. hair dye. In the next two weeks I won't be able to leave my house as my hair is growing in.....can't except that natural colour, if you know what I mean...

Thank again Donna Mae

Hi mis_chiff

Thanks for the info. Had the same skin irritations, along with burning, redness and itching....
I was told that Dove Beautifully Clean shampoo is gluten free, so will be trying this next, and Paul Mitchell products as well, hope this is true.

Seems like everyone that I ask about make up that has Celiac, tells me that they don't use make up or dye their hair, for that very reason, they are tired of all the bad reactions....

I going down kicking....can't do without my makeup or hair dye, call me vain...lol but I am not giving up till I find safe products.

Keep well,
Donna Mae

Donna Mae, there is also a blogger on this site called "Amanda'sMommy" or something like that. Her blog is on the second page right now. She has several lists of gluten-free products that may help you out. She's got some make-up lists and I think other things like shampoos and lotions in addition to foods.

Hi Donna Mae,
My understanding is if you are gluten free and someone in your house uses hand lotion and touchs door handles, etc you can be glutened. It is very hard to control your household unless you make it completely gluten free. My daughter also is struggling with product concerns. Right now she is looking for a good gluten free shampoo. Now this is a girl that has tons of make up and hair products and now Celiac. I think the bathroom might get cleared out once again. There are so many normal gluten free products out there that makes life a bit easier. So far in the past few months of finding her Celiac, the only think that we found to be expensive is "BREAD", and it tastes just awful. I have found many bread recipes, I will be trying soon. Good luck with your research. I think everyone in the beginning goes thru research after research. Its a long journey. Good luck to you.

Gillian's French Rolls taste like real bread! found em at my supermarket, Micro for 30 seconds to defrost then toast. Tastes Great! I make a sandwich every day now! I have stopped dreaming of Sandwich Shops.

Thank you! I wear Buxom Lip Gloss and was just wondering if it's gluten free. I too am tired of having to call everyone to check! I just wish the FDA would pass a law saying that all products need to be marked "gluten free" or "contains gluten," contains milk/peanuts/soy etc... Thanks for doing the research!
