Wow, I had no idea that you had to even worry about SHAMPOO!! Something I just basically take for granted, but apparently I will have to make sure that my stepdaughter's shampoo and hair products are gluten-free.

I'm honestly beginning to wonder how ppl afford such a restrictive allergy. I mean, we are a family of 7 when all are here. MOST of the time we are a family of 5. If she comes to live with us full time, which it sounds like she will be, we will have 6 here full time. (The 7th child is in college) I just cannot imagine how this is going to affect our budget. All this special stuff, buying doubles of stuff so her's won't be contaminated... it seems like so much!! I guess it is a good thing I am starting NOW before she is here to get things together and get information on what to do. We won't be hit all at once. Still, it's a worrisome thing. I mean, I can be as careful and safe as possible but that doesn't mean her brothers will be. And I don't think we can afford to go 100% gluten-free and feed the boys all gluten-free stuff too. Just the cost of bread to keep them in sandwiches would eat us out of house and home.

 

No, we will have to figure something out. Plus, she will be starting high school this fall and I'm curious how she would handle lunches there. Most kids buy their lunch, but I am just assuming she could not do that. I'm really anxious to hear from other's on what they do, and how they do it. Esp if their whole house has not gone gluten-free. I am sure we will definately cut back on what we have with gluten in it, no doubt. And I am not one for buying a lot of prepackaged meals so dinners that I cook will be gluten-free and all will eat it... but things like snacks and bread... those will be tough.

It sounds like you've really educated yourself in preparation for your step-daughter's arrival. I think that's great. It will be tricky having one celiac among a family of non-celiacs. Both of my children and I have it, so I was able to make my kitchen completely gluten-free. My husband eats whatever I buy and cook and he's fine with it. Every once in a while, he'll buy some crackers or a loaf of bread for sandwiches, but that is rare and he is careful not to cross-contaminate.

I would be curious, though, as to which side of the family your step-daughter got celiac disease from. Since it's genetic, it's very likely that either her father or her mother have it. If nobody knows, then they should get tested because any of their other children can have it, too. If it's her father (or his side of the family) and you've had children with him, you may have more celiacs in your household that you realize. :o

All his other kids have been tested and don't have it. He hasn't been tested and I don't think his ex has been tested so we don't know which side has it... but we did make sure the other kids were tested. They've never had food/digestive issues either. Now I know my husband doesn't have any digestive symptoms of celiacs but I have no idea about his ex. I know that his ex and her husband were going to make their house gluten-free, but it is a lot easier for them to do since it is just the two of them and my stepdaughter. We haven't had any children together, so that isn't an issue. My kids are mine, his are his LOL

Yup! I am a Michelle. My 5th grade year we had FIVE Michelle's in my class, so I guess it has been a pretty popular name!
