Celiac.com 07/15/2022 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain brands and products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about pet products, especially pet treats. Specifically, are dog treats gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

Just like people, dogs can be sensitive to ingredients in their treats, including gluten, and other known allergens.  As with snacks for people, many mainstream dog treats are not gluten-free. Many contain grains, and or fillers that include gluten ingredients.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Some pet owners like to make sure they are getting dog treats that is free of gluten or other known allergens. Note: The FDA has expressed concerns about potential dangers of a grain-free diet for dogs, so please consider consulting a veterinarian before taking your pet gluten-free. Read more at AKC.org.

To do this, it's important to read labels and look for dog treats that are specifically labeled as gluten-free. To make that job a bit easier, here's a list of top brands of gluten-free dog treats.

After losing my Maggie almost two years ago I have now adopted a rescue pup with a very sad history. Her isolation and previous owners beatings have left her in dire need of training. After bonding with me she is quite overprotective. My search for gluten free treats for training has been a washout. I do give her a food with rice but no gluten grains. I will be making gluten free treats for her this weekend since I haven't been able to find any gluten-free training treats for her. She is well bonded with me now but sees anyone on a walk as a threat. She barks snarls and snaps at anyone that is in her line of sight. She is a licker and before she goes to sleep she will lick and cuddle for a half an hour. Heaven help me if I have my mouth open!!! I do wish they had more gluten-free treats that are not jerky and very pricey.
