    Are Prawn Crackers Gluten-Free? (+Video)

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Wondering if prawn crackers are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? Here's the rundown.

Celiac.com 11/20/2024 - We answer questions about the gluten-free status of many products, especially snack foods. Lately, we've been seeing a number of questions about prawn crackers. Are prawn crackers gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? Here's the rundown.

Prawn Crackers Are Not Typically Gluten-Free

Traditional prawn crackers are not typically gluten-free, and are not safe for people with celiac disease. While they are made mainly from made with tapioca flour and ground dried prawn, they often contain wheat flour as a binding ingredient. This means most commercially available prawn crackers may not be safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.

    When Choosing Gluten-Free Prawn Crackers

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Check the Ingredients: Some brands may use only tapioca starch or rice flour, which would make them gluten-free, but wheat flour is common. Always check the ingredient list or look for a "Gluten-Free" label to confirm.

Cross-Contamination Risks: Prawn crackers are often produced in facilities that may also handle gluten-containing foods, so even gluten-free prawn crackers can be at risk of cross-contamination unless certified gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Alternatives: There are some brands and recipes that make gluten-free prawn crackers using tapioca starch or rice flour exclusively. Checking with Asian specialty stores or health food stores may help you find these options.

For those following a strict gluten-free diet, it’s safest to look for a certified gluten-free brand to avoid any risk.

    Laiki Red Rice Crackers
I recently discovered a new snack cracker called Laiki Red Rice Crackers, which I would recommend to anyone who likes a healthy snack cracker.
Despite their delicious and complex whole grain taste, they are made with only three ingredients: wholegrain red rice, sustainably farmed palm oil, and sea salt. This means that they are a very allergy-friendly snack cracker that is suitable for just about anyone, and of course they are also gluten-free.
A 21 gram package contains only 100 calories, and has 4% of your recommended daily fiber. They also make a black rice variety, which I plan to try next.

Can Indigenous African Grains Make More Nutritious Gluten-Free Crackers?
Celiac.com 10/12/2022 - A new EU-funded research project, InnoFoodAfrica, is looking to harness climate-resilient African crops to improve nutritional profiles of gluten-free foods. Consumption of gluten-free food products in Africa, as in many places, has increased in recent years. However these food products are often high in starch and low in protein and fiber.
One band of researchers for the project, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, are looking to use indigenous African grains, like amaranth, sorghum, or teff, to develop nutrient-rich, gluten-free crackers. Gluten-free crackers are typically made with maize or rice. By replacing those grains with climate-smart African crops such as amaranth, sorghum, teff, Bambara groundnut or cowpea, the goal is to enhance both the ...
