    Scott Adams

Scott Adams was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1994, and, due to the nearly total lack of information available at that time, was forced to become an expert on the disease in order to recover. In 1995 he launched the site that later became Celiac.com to help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed so they can begin to live happy, healthy gluten-free lives.  He is co-author of the book Cereal Killers, and founder and publisher of the (formerly paper) newsletter Journal of Gluten Sensitivity. In 1998 he founded The Gluten-Free Mall which he sold in 2014. Celiac.com does not sell any products, and is 100% advertiser supported.

Do Proton Pump Inhibitors Increase Risk of Celiac Disease?
Celiac.com 10/30/2013 - Rates of celiac disease and the use of drugs to inhibit the secretion of stomach acid have both increased in recent decades. A research team recently set out to explore the association between anti-secretory medication exposure and subsequent development of celiac disease.
The research team included Benjamin Lebwohl, Stuart J. Spechler, Timothy C. Wang, Peter H.R. Green, and Jonas F. Ludvigsson. They are affiliated with the Celiac Disease Center at the Department of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY.
For their population-based case control study, the research team looked at data for celiac disease patients diagnosed at any of the pathology departments in Sweden from July 2005 through February 2008.

Can Steroids Help Treat Celiac Disease?
Celiac.com 05/19/2014 - A research team recently examined the effects of prednisolone and a gluten-free diet on mucosal epithelial cell regeneration and apoptosis in celiac disease.
The team included Shalimar, P. Das, V. Sreenivas, S. Datta Gupta, S.K. Panda, and G.K. Makharia. They are with the Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Ansari Nagar in New Delhi, India.
For their pilot randomized, controlled trial, the team looked at thirty-three untreated patients with celiac disease. They randomly assigned 17 of them to a gluten-free diet alone, and the other 16 to a gluten-free diet + prednisolone. Gluten intake was 1 mg/kg for 4 weeks.
The team conducted duodenal biopsies at the start, and at 4 and 8 weeks following...

A Connection between Celiac Disease and Cystic Fibrosis May Lead to Drugs for Gluten Intolerance
Celiac.com 12/31/2018 - Rates of celiac disease are about triple for patients who also suffer from cystic fibrosis, compared to those without cystic fibrosis. A team of researchers recently investigated the molecular similarities between celiac disease and cystic fibrosis. Specifically, they set out to examine the role of mutations of the gene coding for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), an anion channel pivotal for epithelial adaptation to cell‐autonomous or environmental stress.    The study was led by Luigi Maiuri, Valeria Raia, and Guido Kroemer. They are variously affiliated with the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy, the University of Naples Federico II in Italy, and the Paris Descartes University in France. Their research shows a co...

Reduced Fecal Acidity Mirrors Rise in Celiac Rates
Celiac.com 10/12/2020 - Researchers have recently begun to understand that gut bacteria play a critical role in keeping people healthy. They are also beginning to understand that our poop offers an excellent glimpse into our gut health. We know that the gut microbiota of children begin to change when they get celiac disease. Low levels of certain gut bacteria correspond with higher rates of celiac disease. We also know that gut microbiomes of children with a high genetic risk for type 1 diabetes are significantly different than those of children with low genetic risk. Moreover, changing gut microbiota could protect against celiac disease.
However, there's much to learn about exactly which bacteria is beneficial and which bacteria is harmful, and what the best balance of bacteria ...
