    Celiac.com 09/08/2016 - A café in Ireland has stirred controversy after claiming that customers requesting gluten-free food will be required to present a doctor's note, proving they have celiac disease or a medical condition that makes gluten-free food necessary.

    The White Moose Café in Dublin's Phibsborough neighborhood has stirred controversy in the past after banning vegans for writing negative reviews about the café. Now, say the owners of the café, guests who demand gluten-free food will need to produce a doctor's note stating that they suffer from celiac disease.

     A post on the company's Facebook reads:

    "This morning a girl asked us if we did gluten-free pancakes and when we asked her if she was a celiac, she didn't even know what the word meant and then proceeded to order regular, gluten-rich pancakes anyway.
    From now on, guests who demand gluten-free food are required to produce a doctor's note which states that you suffer from celiac disease.
    Guests following a gluten-free fad, who don't even know what gluten is, can cop the f#%@ on and eat regular food like everybody else."

    Well, that's one way to deal with gluten-free fad dieters. Smartly played, or misguided?

    Very interesting reading of all the experiences that we have. I manage very well here in Tennessee. Most restaurants advertise their gluten-free Menus. I can imagine it being a nightmare for some people that are gluten-free legitimately and have a difficult time in restaurants that are not very friendly to the disease. You must always check before you go to a restaurant and avoid controversy! Some people just don't understand.

    I am waiting for someone to demand proof of diabetes from anyone ordering a sugar free coke, especially if the patron is not visibly obese.

    The great thing about the gluten free fad dieters is that they have increased demand for gluten free options, for which those of us with medical conditions benefit. Requiring a doctor's note is a great reason to avoid going there. They clearly don't want the business, and therefore won't get the business of non gluten free family members either.

    Those who are mindlessly following a fad make it much harder for those with real celiac disease or gluten intolerance! In some ways I do not blame the restaurant for getting fed up with fad followers!

    I agree...the fad people are ruining it for those of us with celiac disease.

    What exactly are they ruining? The more attention they bring to the diet, the more options there will be, and the more people there will be who will learn about the diet. Most people with celiac disease are still diagnosed.

    Celiac.com 04/25/2016 - In a scandal that is shaping up to resemble the story of Paul Seelig, who sold "gluten-free" baked goods that were actually regular baked goods merely labeled "gluten-free," an Ohio couple is suing their local pizzeria for serving "gluten-free" pizza that they claim was just regular pizza labeled as gluten-free.
    According to court documents, the Reynoldsburg, Ohio couple claims that, on April 11, 2014, they bought a pie from Donatos Pizza at 7580 East Broad Street in Reynoldsburg. The couple claims that the pizza was advertised as gluten-free, but was made with standard pizza dough, which contains wheat flour.

    Woman Sues Hotel, Claims Non-Gluten-free Pastries Made Her Sick
    Celiac.com 09/02/2016 - A Canadian woman who claims to suffer from celiac disease has sued Mohegan Sun Pocono and its buffet, Timbers, after she allegedly became ill from eating pastries mislabeled as "gluten free."
    The woman says the pastries labeled as "gluten free" at the buffet were standard non-gluten-free pastries, and says the error made her violently ill, and caused weight loss and several weeks of sickness.
    Dianne M. Leyshon, of Terrace Avenue, Harding, claims that, at a brunch served on July, 27, 2014, Timbers Buffet represented the desserts as gluten-free. The complaint alleges Leyshon became "violently ill" after she ate "several pastries."

    Colonial Williamsburg Denies Gluten Discrimination Claim
    Celiac.com 09/13/2017 - Facing charges that it forced a young boy with gluten-intolerance to eat outside in the rain, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation has issued an official statement in which it denies violating any laws or mistreating an 11-year old Maryland boy with a food allergy, while he was eating in Shields Tavern with a school group in May, according to a filing Monday in U.S. District Court.
    The lawsuit, filed by a Maryland family, alleges that Colonial Williamsburg violated federal and state law by discriminating against the boy, referred to as J.D. in court documents, by not allowing him to eat his food inside Shields Tavern May 11. The suit further contends that the boy was forced to eat alone in the rain.

    Gluten in Soup at Grand Canyon's El Tovar Hotel Injured L.A. Man, Lawsuit Claims
    Celiac.com 04/23/2019 - A bowl of French Onion soup at Grand Canyon's El Tovar Lodge contained hidden gluten that left a Los Angeles artist with a "permanent" injury, claims a recently filed lawsuit.
    As a result of an adverse reaction to the soup, Todd Serlin is suing Grand Canyon's concessionaire, Xanterra, for more than $100,000, according to the suit, now in federal court.
    The federal complaint states that Serlin and his partner, Mark Bauer, had booked a room at the historic El Tovar on December 27, 2016, and dined in the hotel's restaurant overlooking the South Rim of Grand Canyon.

    Court Reinstates Gluten-Free Boy's Lawsuit Against Colonial Williamsburg Tavern
    Celiac.com 06/17/2019 - A federal appeals court reinstated a lawsuit filed by a boy with celiac disease against a Colonial Williamsburg restaurant. The court ruled that a jury should decide whether the restaurant violated the Americans with Disabilities Act when they barred a boy from bringing his gluten-free meal into the Shields Tavern.
    The lawsuit lists the boy's name as J.D. Because J.D. has celiac disease and follows a strict gluten-free diet, he couldn't eat with his classmates on their May 11, 2017, field trip. The staff at the Shields Tavern told J.D. that they could make a gluten-free meal for him,  but they could not allow him to eat his own food in the tavern, which is owned and operated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
