Men Are Biggest Gluten-free Diet Cheats
Celiac.com 06/19/2015 - And the biggest gluten-free diet cheats are? Men.
According to a recent survey commissioned by U.K.-based gluten-free bread company Newburn Bakehouse, gluten-intolerant men feel stigmatized by their dietary restrictions, which leads them to cheat on their diets far more commonly than women.
The survey showed that 36 percent of U.K. men sensitive to gluten in food regularly cheat, even though cheating can have adverse health consequences.
Moreover, one in five of those surveyed said they believe a gluten-free diet is “not for real men.”
This makes for some fairly large numbers of male gluten-free diet cheats.
Studies by the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research show that about 6 percent of the U.S. population suff...

That Girl - Bullying and Celiac Disease
Celiac.com 02/08/2017 - "What if the kid you bullied at school, grew up, and turned out to be the only surgeon who could save your life?" --Lynette Mather
If you ask any high school senior what in their life has changed the most since kindergarten, statistics show that many would answer moving from one school to another. However, the more drastic of changes are seen such as illnesses diagnosed during these critical school ages. In 2009 I was diagnosed with celiac disease, and that diagnosis has impacted my life in both positive and negative ways for my past, present, and future time at Indiana Area High School and beyond. Personally I have had to deal with bullying because of my disabilities. Bullying by definition is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. I along...

You're Not Crazy: Coping with Celiac Disease & Gluten Sensitivity
Celiac.com 12/29/2017 - Do you remember the moment when you were diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity? Most people I talk to have it etched in their memory. After all, the information is life transforming. Yet, I doubt if most of us understood the enormity of the information until time passed and we had the opportunity to actually fully understand what it meant besides the gluten free diet (GFD).
Along with having to learn that gluten is everywhere, we also learn that having to eat differently is, to put it mildly, upsetting. In fact, the psychological impact of living with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity usually involves depression and anxiety. There are other emotional responses as well; these include grief and, for some, trauma (depending upon how long it took...

Are Celiac Support Group Numbers Dwindling?
Celiac.com 08/04/2018 - December 16, 2000, a date that is etched in my mind forever. My husband and I went out for dinner with friends and returned to their home to play some cards for the evening. By around 9 p.m., I noticed my stomach rumbling and I began to make many trips to the bathroom with diarrhea. In fact, it was the beginning of a month-long siege of severe diarrhea. Up until that day, I never had any problems with digestion, bowel problems, or food issues. But suddenly my life was changing. After about four days, I saw my family doctor who started me out with a course of Flagyl, which did nothing to stop the diarrhea over the ensuing week. Following that was my visit to the ER, only to be told to follow up the next morning with my family doctor. When I showed up without an appointment...
