Celiac.com 12/30/2019 - Anyone familiar with life in the UK knows that they take their tea seriously. Tea in the UK is more than just a beverage. Afternoon tea is an event, replete with cookies, cakes, sandwiches and other baked delights. As such, traditional afternoon tea in the UK is not a gluten-free affair.
That has now changed a bit, with the move by Edinburgh's Tower Restaurant, the eatery on top of the National Museum of Scotland, to offer a fully gluten-free afternoon tea.
Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
To the delight of many gluten-free eaters, the museum shared a photo of its gluten-free tea spread on their Facebook page. Comments from pleased celiac sufferers and gluten-intolerant diners were swift, and overwhelmingly positive.
Gluten-free eaters used to paying a premium over standard prices will rejoice in the news that the gluten-free afternoon tea is the same price as the regular version - £27.50, or £37.50, including a glass of champagne.
Diners receive an array of gluten-free sandwiches, like ham and cheese, egg mayo, cress and cucumber, and dill butter, as well as savory pastries. The spread also includes gluten-free scones, clotted cream, and jam, along with fresh gluten-free cakes and desserts.
For cocktail drinkers, the restaurant offers "G and Tea cocktails" (silver tip infused gin grenadine, cranberry juice and grapefruit juice), or "Rosy Lee Martinis" (silver-tip tea-infused Tanqueray Martini Rosso, rose syrup and lemon) to pair with your food. The afternoon tea is served between 2pm and 6pm each day.
