Celiac.com 05/24/2023 - Illinois-based Enjoy Life Foods, maker of allergy-friendly and gluten free snacks, including cookies, chocolate, and snack bars, is planning to close its bakery operations at River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The company was one of the first to adopt the GFCO Gluten-free Food Certification for its products.

Enjoy Life Foods filed a WARN Notice with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, disclosing its plans for several rounds of layoffs beginning in July, a move that will eventually cut 105 jobs, and close plant operations at the facility on 301 Salem Road. The company gave no reason for the move.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The layoffs are scheduled for July 3, September 1, and October 3, with the final round expected when the facility officially closes on April 1, 2024.

The closure is expected to be permanent and the affected employees are not represented by a union and do not have bumping rights.

The move is a huge turnaround from September 2016, when Enjoy Life Foods invested $39 million to open the 200,000-square-foot facility. At the time, the company received up to $800,000 in conditional tax credits based on a pledge to the Indiana Economic Development Corp., (IEDC) to add 200 jobs by the end of 2017.

Enjoy Life Foods is a subsidiary of Mondelez International Inc., which also owns Chips Ahoy, Triscuit and Oreo, among other brands.

The Gluten Intolerance Group Appoints SGS to Audit GFCO standards.
Celiac.com 07/27/2017 - The Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO) was founded in 2005 by the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America (GIG) to offer independent certification to manufacturers of gluten-free products.
GFCO certification is accredited to ISO 17065, and assures consumers with gluten sensitivities that a product meets the strict gluten-free standards. In most cases, GFCO standards exceed those of Codex, US, Canada, the EU and many other country standards for gluten-free products. For example, the GFCO guarantees that all products with its logo contain 10ppm or less of gluten.
The GFCO also confirms the validity of a manufacturer's gluten-free processes, and substantiates claims about the products.

FDA Rules All Distilled Alcohol is Gluten-Free
Celiac.com 08/19/2020 - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ruled that distilled foods and spirits made from gluten-containing grains can be labelled as ‘gluten-free.’ The FDA ruling covers fermented and distilled foods, or foods that contain fermented or distilled ingredients, which are made using gluten-containing grains such as rye, barley and wheat. The ruling changes the previous FDA requirement that distilled products labeled "gluten-free" must contain no gluten ingredients from start to finish.
The change was hailed by Chris Swonger, president and CEO of the the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (Discus), who said: “We commend FDA for this consumer-friendly ruling that will allow ‘gluten-free’ labelling claims to be included on distilled foods made from...

Farmers Left Holding the Bag as Company Cancels Gluten-Free Oat Contracts
Celiac.com 03/28/2023 - A food ingredient company in Regina, Canada, is walking away from gluten-free oat contracts it signed with about 30 farmers in northeastern Saskatchewan in 2022. The numbers are still just estimates, but, with the production contracts voided, it’s possible that the affected producers could lose $4 to 5 per bushel in the price of their oats.
Purely Canada Foods, a division of Above Food, sent a letter to affected producers March 1. The Western Producer obtained a copy of the letter. It states that Purely Canada Foods is using “force majeure” to dissolve the contracts because the processor it had a contract with is unable to take the oats.
“There were 21,000 tonnes of certified Gluten-Free oat conversion capacity… contracted for Gluten-Free process...
