    Gluten-free American Pizza Championship Winners - 2013

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Celiac.com 11/08/2013 - For spectators and competitors alike, the American Pizza Championship is an exciting event displaying some of America’s premier pizzaioli, or pizza makers. In the interest of full disclosure, I served as one of the five judges for this event.

Photo: Jefferson AdamsAmong the pizzaioli to compete in the American Pizza Championship at the International Baking Industry Expo in Las Vegas, was Heather Zook, of Ohio.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Baking in her first-ever pizza competition, Zook surprised herself by emerging victorious, as the first-place winner in the gluten-free pizza category.

Zook took first place with her three meat pizza with a crust made from a white rice-millet flour blend. Her victory earned Zook a slot on the U.S. Pizza Team, and an all-expense-paid trip to Parma, Italy to compete in the World Pizza Championships as a member of that team in the spring of 2014.

Second place in the gluten-free pizza category went to Mike Anheiser of Pizza Dock in Fredericktown, Ohio.

Jason Samosky of Samosky's Homestyle Pizzaria in Valley City, Ohio took home the third place honors in the gluten-free pizza category.

Anyone noticing a theme here? For great gluten-free pizza, Ohio looks like a good place to be.

Great article, but bad news... I called Samosky's today (2/22/2014) to find out if they are serving gluten-free pizzas yet and I was told that they have no plans to serve gluten-free at this time. I was told they would have to have a separate kitchen and they don't intend to add a gluten-free kitchen at this time.

Celiac.com 09/28/2006 - The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia announces the establishment of the Center for Celiac Disease, a multidisciplinary resource created to diagnose, treat and provide support for patients and families with celiac disease. "A person with celiac disease is unable to digest gluten, a common ingredient found in many foods, including bread, pasta and even condiments," said Ritu Verma, M.D., gastroenterologist and director of the Center for Celiac Disease at Childrens Hospital. "This inability to digest gluten damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents the body from absorbing essential nutrients. The only treatment for celiac disease is a strict gluten-free diet."

Celiac.com 06/29/2011 - Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic credits an unbeaten string of victories on the court to his special, gluten-free diet.
Meanwhile, Sabine Lisicki recently attributed her collapse on the threshold of a major upset over third seed Vera Zvonareva in the second round of the French Open to a need for her body to adjust to her new gluten-free diet; which Lisicki adopted after discovering she is intolerant to gluten, a protein in cereal grains.
After physically crumbling within sight of victory, a sobbing Lisicki was carried from the court on a stretcher. The 21-year-old later explained on her website (www.sabinelisicki.com) that her collapse occurred because her body simply let her down. She said that "[d]octors recently discovered that I am intolerant to gluten...
