Celiac.com 11/23/2012 - In the latest gluten-free celebrity news, none other than Secretary of State Hillary Clinton celebrated her 65th birthday (that's right, she's now officially a senior citizen) with a gluten-free birthday cake.

Photo: CC--marcnClinton celebrated her birthday last weekend at a fancy inn in rural Connecticut inn with Bill, Chelsea, and Chelsea's husband, Marc before catching a flight to Algeria to address the crisis in neighboring Mali, according to a report in the New York Post. According to the Post's sources, Bill and Hillary stayed up late playing cards in the lobby.

Clinton's birthday cake was not only gluten-free, but also vegan, as husband Bill has been a vegan for a few years now. Daughter Chelsea's 2010 wedding also featured a gluten-free cake.

The Sprue-Nik Press, published by the Tri-County Celiac Sprue Support Group, a chapter of CSA/USA, Inc. serving southeastern Michigan, Volume 7, Number 5, July/August 1998. Dr. Peter Ernst is Senior Scientist at the Dept. of Pediatrics, University of Texas Medical Branch. He is the son of Canadian Celiac Association (CCA) co-founder Kay Ernst, and is a celiac himself.
During Dr. Ernst’s talk, he indicated his philosophy toward celiac disease which is, "Don’t exclude anything if it is unnecessary." As a result he made three assertions which may provoke no major objection from Canadian celiacs but are controversial among US celiacs. Dr. Ernst’s first assertion is that it is almost impossible for gliadins to be in distilled products. For instance, many people avoid distilled v...

Celiac.com 08/02/2002 - The Bishops National Liturgy Office in Italy recently approved a low-gluten Eucharistic host made by a specific German firm for use by worshippers who have celiac disease. The hosts have been approved by the scientific committee of the Italian Celiac Association and are made using Codex Alimentarius quality wheat starch that contains 0.0374 milligrams of gluten. Additionally, the Vaticans Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has also approved the hosts for use in the Eucharist. According to the Catholic Church the bread used in the Eucharist must be made exclusively from wheat, and the German-made hosts are currently the only ones produced that meet all of the Catholic Churchs requirements.
This decision creates controversy, however, between worshippers...

Celiac.com 09/22/2011 - Serbian Tennis star Novak Djokovic has gone on a major victory streak since going gluten-free late last year, winning 62 matches, including the Wimbledon championship, and losing just two in 2011.
Most recently, Djokovic earned his first-ever U.S. Open tennis championship with a grueling  6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 victory over Rafael Nadal that took 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete.
Djokovic, who had been hovering near the top of the men's world tennis rankings for several years, credits his most recent break through to a gluten-free diet. Djokovic adopted the gluten-free diet after testing by his nutritionist showed him to be gluten intolerant.
Because Djokovic cannot process the carbohydrates that were his most common fuel source, and he was forced to ...

Celiac.com 01/13/2012 - In an event that was part local apple festival, part celiac disease awareness promotion, and one-hundred percent record-breaking bake-off, a team of community members in Buenos Aires has baked the world's longest apple tart. One third of the 984-foot tart was made gluten-free to promote celiac disease awareness.
Enthusiastic volunteers removed sections of the tart from numerous bakery trucks parked along Rivadavia Avenue, the world's longest avenue.
They then assembled them end to end, making sure to keep the gluten-free portions carefully separated from the rest of the tart.
This is the third year in a row that the tart-baking group, which is based in from Cinco Saltos, Argentina, has organized the tart bake-off.
Another goal of the event, say event...
