    Is A1 Steak Sauce Gluten-Free and Safe for People with Celiac Disease?

    Celiac.com 12/04/2020 - We get more than a few questions about steak sauce. One question we get a lot is: Is A-1 Steak Sauce gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    While A-1 Steak Sauce, now simply called A-1 Sauce, is not labeled gluten-free, it is very likely gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease. A-1 is made by Kraft Foods, which openly discloses any potential allergens or gluten containing ingredients on their labels.

    A-1 Sauce ingredients are naturally gluten-free and include:

    • tomato purée, raisin paste, spirit vinegar, corn syrup, salt, crushed orange purée, dried garlic and onions, spice, celery seed, caramel color, potassium sorbate, and xanthan gum.

    Since A-1 contains no gluten ingredients, and since distilled spirit vinegar is gluten-free, A-1 sauce can be considered tp be naturally gluten-free, although it does not have "gluten-free" on its label.  Some people with celiac disease may not want to include it in their diets because of this.

    Still, for anyone wanting to play it safe, there are numerous gluten-free steak sauce brands for your enjoyment.

    Caramel coloring very often has gluten in it so it is misleading to say that the ingredients are gluten free unless specified by the company.

    In the USA caramel color is gluten-free. Please provide a source for your claim that "Caramel coloring very often has gluten in it."

    I have more of a gluten allergy than celiacs but I had a reaction to it. It could have been some sort of cross contact. I’m not sure but there is some sort of gluten containing item in it. I will say that I do react to trace amounts though so it may be safe for the average celiac individual.

    On 4/10/2024 the A1 Steak Sauce in my local Target store has vinegar listed as an ingredient, not distilled vinegar. So I would say this product is no longer gluten free. I can upload an image if needed.

    It depends on what the vinegar was made from.

    Vinegar is typically gluten-free, although there are a few types that may not be. In this case it usually means distilled vinegar, which is always gluten-free.
