Celiac.com 11/27/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about coffee.

Specifically, is coffee gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease? The short answer is yes.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Coffee is one of those products that is naturally gluten-free. Brewed plain ground coffee is gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease. As long as nothing containing gluten is added, then the regular brewed coffee will be gluten-free.

Generally speaking, nearly all types of coffee will be gluten-free and safe for celiacs. Just be careful not to add anything with wheat or gluten and you'll be fine with coffee.

It's important that people with celiac disease make sure to avoid any gluten ingredients. If you're buying a packaged coffee drink, be sure to read labels, avoid gluten ingredients, and choose carefully.

    Happy coffee drinking!

Can you substantiate this? What do you mean by fillers? Are you saying coffee manufacturers are adding wheat in order to dilute the coffee grounds in order to lower their costs? Typically, the term "fillers" is used to speak of ingredients that are added to take up space. This is a common practice when making pills but I'm having a hard time seeing how this would apply to coffee grounds.

In instant coffee, especially flavored ones, sometimes wheat is added along with the flavorings.   Same as spices having added wheat as a filler and to prevent clumping.

I had to quit buying International flavored coffees because of this.  Plain unflavored coffees should be fine.

If wheat is included then it must say so on the ingredient label. I've not seen wheat used as described in the comments, at least not in the USA.

Well, this was decades ago, before the new nutritional and ingredient information labeling requirements.

This does not include anything about cross contamination in the manufacturing process.  Of course we can read an ingredient label.  The question we should be asking is if it's manufactured on shared equipment, putting it in contact with gluten. This would not be disclosed on the label.  It's up to each of us to be safe and ask the right questions for our own health.  These articles should all be updated because they are misleading.

Actually if shared equipment with a top allergen, and wheat is one of them, as a best practice it should be disclosed on the ingredient label as "made in a facility that includes wheat" or "made on shared equipment with wheat."  Most large companies now disclose any possible risk with the top 8 allergens, but not all companies do this.

While we don't know of any other brands of coffee liqueur that are specifically labeled "Gluten-Free," all of the top brands we've looked at are made without gluten-ingredients, and none list wheat as an allergen. As always, read labels, and avoid anything that you're not sure about.
That said, Kahlúa, and these other top brands of coffee liqueur can be considered gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease. A few, like Mr Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, are even labeled gluten-free:
