    Is Jell-O Pudding gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Celiac.com 06/25/2020 - Jell-O Pudding and Jell-O Instant Pudding are manufactured by Kraft Foods, and while Kraft does not specifically label Jell-O pudding products as gluten-free, nearly all of them are made without gluten ingredients, and so we regard them as gluten-free, and safe for people with celiac disease.

    Officially, Celiac.com puts Jell-O Pudding and Jell-O Instant Pudding in the Gluten-Safe category. Gluten-Safe products are products that do not contain gluten ingredients, and for which we have not received any credible complaints of gluten-contamination. While not officially labeled "Gluten-Free," Gluten-Safe products are very unlikely to contain gluten, and are likely safe for people with celiac disease on a gluten-free diet. We consider gluten-safe products to be gluten-free unless shown otherwise.

    Gluten content can almost always be determined from the label, and the most accurate information can be found by checking the ingredient list on our packages. For labeling purposes, Kraft products list all sources of gluten, including gluten-containing grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats, triticale, spelt, kamut, mir, farina) and other ingredients (e.g. “natural flavor (contains rye)”). Kraft has a rigorous protocol to ensure that products bearing a gluten-free claim meet the FDA requirement (less than 20ppm gluten). However, you should know that we do not guarantee that our products are gluten-free because we sometimes purchase flavoring, color or spice ingredients from suppliers who do not list every possible source of gluten beyond what is required by law.

    That said, please do read ingredients carefully, and check the Kraft Foods website regularly, as ingredients and product formulations can change. Also, one exception we found was Jell-O Instant Cheesecake Pudding & Pie Filling, which contains barley in its flavoring ingredients, and so is not gluten-free and not safe for celiacs.

    Once again, Jell-O Instant Cheesecake Pudding & Pie Filling contains barley in its flavoring ingredients, and so is not gluten-free and not safe for celiacs. It is the only Jell-O pudding product we found to list wheat, barley or rye ingredients.

    I recently called Kraft and asked about the safety of their instant pudding and jello products and was told that if I had celiac disease they were not safe for me.

    Kraft has a policy of just disclosing ingredients and will not, for legal reasons, guarantee that their products are gluten free (they do not test).  But jello is safe.  If you are still worried, consider a homemade version.  You have to cook it on the stove top though.  It is so, good and worth the stirring constantly!

    The ingredients on the Oreo Cookies and Cream instant pudding says it contains wheat. I am not 100% sure as I am new to gluten-free but I don't think I should eat that.

    Vickie, any food item containing wheat, barely or rye in any form should be off limits to those endeavoring to eat gluten-free. This would include things found in ingredient labels such as "starch" and "modified food starch" unless the source source is specifically stated to be not from wheat, barley or rye. Also included would be things like "malt flavoring" and "malt extract" since malt is made from either barley or wheat. Wheat starch is commonly used as a thickener and texturing agent. Because of that, most canned soups and even most soy sauces contain wheat. Be a dedicated food label reader.

    In the USA if Modified Food Starch has wheat in it, it must be declared on the label. It is gluten-free if it doesn't list "wheat."

    Yikes!    It DOES contain wheat.  Wow!  I would be worried about their other mixes being cross contaminated.  I assume (not verified) that Kraft would use the same manufacturing line.   So, what to do?  Be like me and make your own pudding from scratch.   I use gluten free (labeled) corn starch.  You have to cook the pudding on the stove.  Stirring constantly and then allowing it to boil for two minutes.  The goal is to not let anything stick to the bottom of the pot.  You can find plenty of recipes on the internet.  Cheap too.  My kid just made some yesterday morning.  Her boyfriend was amazed at the taste.   He grew up eating those fake Snack Pac school box lunch puddings.  Chock full of preservatives.  Yuck!

    Just want to update my comment.  The  Kraft instant pudding line now has a version that includes wheat (thanks, Guest Vickie).    Always, always read the label.   I think the jello gelatin is still fine.

    I was glutened by the pistachio pudding. It was unmistakeable, and the ingredients appeared safe. They do not verify the flavorings and such are safe from cross contamination. This is an irresponsible post to make, saying they’re safe because they don’t contain gluten ingredients. That’s not how celiac works.

    With cross contamination, individual celiac responses will vary tremendously. And the amount of cross contamination will likely vary from batch to batch since it is incidental. It will also depend on how much of the item you eat which is something we don't see talked about in celiac circles very much. We talk about parts per million standards but in reality, it's how much gluten you get total when you eat something.

    The Instant Sugar Free Cheesecake is listed in the gluten free version here but it states barely (as you pointed out in the article). Might want to remove that.

    This recipe comes to us from Amy Roberts.
    (Makes 12 regular sized muffins)
    Ingredients:
    2/3 cup of gluten-free flour mix
    1/3 cup of corn starch or potato starch (we used corn starch)

    While there is nothing wrong with rice pudding featuring traditional raisins and cinnamon, the orange and rum in this version come together for an incredibly intriguing dessert.

    Celiac.com 02/18/2014 - Rice pudding is one of my perennial favorite desserts. This version fuses arborio rice with citrus, cinnamon and a dash of creamy mascarpone cheese to achieve a kind of rice-pudding nirvana.
    Ingredients:
    1 strip lemon peel, plus ½ teaspoon grated zest ⅓ cup golden raisins or dried currants 1 tablespoon unsalted butter Kosher salt 1 cup Arborio rice 4 cups organic whole milk ¾ cup granulated sugar 2 real cinnamon sticks 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract ½ cup Mascarpone cheese 3 tablespoons confectioners' sugar Ground cinnamon, for sprinkling ½ cup dark rum Directions:

    Celiac.com 07/18/2014 - It’s been hot lately, so I’ve been looking and lots and lots of tasty cool, and frozen things to make the summer just a bit more enjoyable.
    For people who love chocolate and bananas, oh, and whipped cream, this recipe delivers.
    Ingredients:
    1 box Jell-O Chocolate Pudding Mix ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 4 large bananas, peeled and sliced 2 cups sweetened whipped cream 3 tablespoons of Kahlua coffee liqueur, as desired Directions:
    Pour milk into large bowl. Add vanilla. Add Kahlua, if desired. Add dry pudding mix. Beat with wire whisk 2 min. or until well blended. Let stand 5 min. or until thickened.
    Peel bananas and cut into slices.
    Arrange slices into a 9-inch pie dish.
    Spread pudding mixture over banana slices in 9-inch pie dish.
