    Is Smuckers Caramel Gluten-Free?

Reviewed and edited by a celiac disease expert.

Wondering if Smuckers caramel is gluten free? Here's the rundown.

Celiac.com 09/14/2024 - We get a lot of questions about which products and brands are gluten-free. We especially get a lot of questions about ice cream toppings and condiments. In this case, caramel sauce.

Specifically, is Smuckers caramel gluten free and safe for people with celiac disease? No, because it contains barley.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Smuckers caramel is officially known as Smucker’s Caramel Ice Cream Topping. It is not specifically produced in a gluten-free facility, though, according to the company website, it contains barley so it would not be considered gluten-free. The only allergens listed on the Smuckers label are milk and soybean, however, since barley is not one of the top 8 allergens it does not need to be declared.

It’s always a good idea to read labels and check the ingredient list to ensure there are no potential sources of gluten.

Smucker's caramel ice cream topping ingredients include:

    • Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Nonfat Milk, Contains 2% Or Less Of: Modified Corn Starch, Salt, Sugar, Natural Flavors (with Barley), Sodium Alginate, Caramel Color, Sodium Phosphate, Sodium Citrate, Cream Solids (from Milk), Vanillin (artificial Flavor), Soy Lecithin, Yellow 6, Red 40.

Wouldn’t the “Natural Flavors (with barley)”  in the ingredients list prevent this food item from being classified as gluten free?

Yes it would, even if it tested less than 20 ppm according to the Q/A section of the FDA gluten free handbook (see #4). The presence of unprocessed gluten-containing grains in a food product automatically disqualify it for using the label, "gluten free".
