Celiac.com 05/16/2022 - A Russian artist with celiac disease is facing up to ten years in prison for “sharing misinformation about the special military operation in Ukraine.”

Artist and a political activist Sasha Skochilenko was arrested and jailed this month for swapping price tags with anti-war stickers in a St. Petersburg supermarket.

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
In an act of solidarity, aimed at raising awareness of Skochilchenko's plight, Russian artist Ksenia Sorokina, who won the prestigious theater award Zolotaya Maska (Golden Mask) for best costume design, donated her prize to Skochilenko.

Because Skochilenko has celiac disease, eating the food she is served in the temporary detainment center could be dangerous.

Sorokina’s friend and fellow Zolotaya Maska laureate, theater director Yevgeniya Berkovich, shared Ksenia’s words on Facebook. “It is shameful to rejoice while other artists are in jail,” Berkovich quoted Ksenia.

Jail food is often not gluten-free, and can be dangerous for people with celiac disease. The Telegram channel Free Sasha Skochilenko has reported that she has suffered at least one seizure after a meal.

The Moscow Times reports Sorokina's concerns about rising government actions against artists.

“When an artist gets jailed for an art action, I simply can't ignore it,” Sorokina said. “I do hope that my support will help Sasha Skochilenko, and I am sure that her family will take the best care of the prize.”

It seems like Celiac.com just can't stay out of the political arena and hasn't learned anything from comments left on other stories with a political leaning.  I just hope someone will interview me as someone with celiac and who had been imprisoned by the Biden Administration for stating an opposing view.  If you are laughing and think I'm a fool then you haven't been paying attention to assault on our constitutional rights.

Bob, judging from the little bit of information you supply about your experience, I'm probably on your side of the ideological street, for the most part, but I hope you realize you just criticized this article for being political by using a politically charged argument yourself.

Celiac.com reports on stories that are of interest to those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, and this story certainly falls under our purview. We're not political, nor have we taken any political position by reporting this story. We've covered many similar stories in the past and will continue to do so.

Precisely!  That was my point.  It’s stories like this that start the mindless banter.  If the story was about prison food in general, then that might be enlightening.  Fortunately for many of us we will never know, at least first hand, about prison food.

But you could have expressed your gripe about the article including a political slant without adding in your personal experience as a political victim. It added nothing to the point you were making IMO. It came across to me as you using it as an opportunity to vent about your own experience as believing you were a victim of partisan politics.

Hey Bob the Guest, you weren’t “imprisoned by the Biden administration for stating an opposing view.” If you were part of the insurrection, you were rightfully charged for illegal activity. This isn’t the place to spread your wacky opinions.

And if you have Celiac Disease and they served you food with gluten you would be the next story. It is about the right to appropriate nutrition regardless belief. Would withholding Insulin from a prisoner be ok?

Irish Prisoners Set to Protest for Gluten-free Bread and Better Food
Celiac.com 09/28/2015 - The Irish Daily Star is reporting that more than two dozen inmates at the country's top security Portlaoise Prison are set to protest prison authorities' refusal to give them gluten-free bread and better food.
The inmates, including RIRA boss Michael McKevitt, say prison officials have broken an agreement to supply gluten-free bread as part of the prison diet.
The availability of gluten-free bread seems to be an issue in what sounds like a larger complaint about the quality of food at the prison. Prisoners can purchase better food at the prison shop, at what prisoners claim are astronomical prices.
According to the Daily Star, prisoners have begun stockpiling rubbish in preparation for a "dirty protest" in a bid to get the authorities to change their mind...

Celiac.com 11/25/2019 - Anyone with celiac disease or gluten-intolerance who has ever flown commercially knows that reliable gluten-free food can be hit or miss, depending on many factors. Many people simply bring their own food and leave it at that. Others choose to trust that the airline will get it right, and order a special meal in advance. What's the best solution? The story of a UK Man who was 'given popcorn and crisps' as a gluten-free meal on 10-hour flight on TUI Airways might serve as a warning against placing too much trust on airlines.
Celiac disease sufferer James Howe, of UK chose to order a gluten-free meal, along with shelling out over $1,000 for premium seats for his 10-hour flight. The 39-year-old says he ordered the three course, gluten-free meal three months bef...
