Celiac.com 06/15/2022 - Just like people, dogs can be sensitive to ingredients in their dog food, including gluten, and other known allergens. Some pet owners like to make sure they are getting dog food that is free of gluten or other known allergens.

These dog foods contain no gluten. Many are specially formulated for dogs with particular health or medical issues. Note: The FDA has expressed some concerns about potential dangers of a grain-free diet for dogs, so please consider consulting a veterinarian before taking your pet gluten-free.

We got a new puppy about 4 years ago and he always had digestive issues. Our veterinarian couldn't seem to give us answers and I was concerned because our previous dog died from a rare liver cancer and died quickly. So I decided to feed our dog a grain free dog food which stopped his diarrhea. When I told the vet this he gave me an argument saying that there was a study that found that dogs that ate grain free have heart problems. That may well be but the vet couldn't give me an answer and the dog has grown into a very happy , healthy and strong dog. He's 100 lbs. and all muscle.

Dogs did not evolve eating grains, so I find it strange that veterinarians keep citing this single study as a reason to keep feeding grains to dogs.

My problem is that I’m extremely sensitive to gluten and I found that many “gluten free” dog foods I tested were positive for gluten. It was likely from cross-contamination in the production facilities. I’ve been feeding my greyhound Kiwi Kitchens but it’s cost prohibitive. She eats 4 cups of food a day. I’d love to see dog food be tested and certified. It would bring me peace of mind.

I doubt that the tiny amount of gluten from cross contamination in "gluten free" dog food would do harm to the dogs. That I know of, celiac disease or NCGS has not been documented in canines though I agree that feeding them dog food whose main ingredient is a grain is probably not good for them. But why do you mention that you are extremely sensitive to gluten? What does that have to do with what you are feeding your dogs? Are you implying that you are getting glutened from handling their dog food?

I question whether dogs need gluten at all. Cats don't, and my dog isn't that far off a cat biologically, right?

When my collie Archie was young we started off with a food the breeder had fed him, and it was clear he was having some problems with itchiness and his coat was dull. Paid the vet good money to be recommended a Hills food which was expensive, then found that was mostly grains - we have a great website here in Australia called https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/ which helped loads.

We actually switched to Taste of the Wild (PREY) for a while, and literally within about 2 weeks Archie had huge improvement. Very noticeable, and far less scratching. The original food I won't name but came from the supermarket Woolworths. We didn't realise at the time it was a home brand because of how the packet was designed, and I don't think we would've fed it if we'd known.

He's 5 now and health is tremendous. We still feed some kibble but these days are more happier feeding him more fresh food (we use an Australian brand called Lyka which is slightly cooked) as well as some raw.

Really makes me sad when I speak to other dog owners who still feed brands with a lot of gluten and grains when their dogs clearly aren't that healthy. Weirdly I often find owners proud of the food they feed their dogs!

Although dogs and cats evolved from a common ancestor about 42 million years ago, I don't think that they are very closely related nowadays, although both are naturally carnivores.

FDA Warns Grain-Free Dog Food May Promote Serious Heart Condition in Dogs
Celiac.com 07/16/2019 - In the same way that many people without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity have embraced gluten-free foods, grain-free and gluten-free dog foods have become popular with many dog owners in the last few years. Once a rarity, grain-free products now make up nearly half of the dog-food market in the United States.
If you're one of the many dog owners who have switched to grain-free dog food in search of better health for your pet, you may be doing more harm than good. Some recent data suggest that removing grains from your dog’s diet might pose a greater health risk than leaving them in.

Pet Food Recall: The Tip of the Iceberg
Celiac.com 07/17/2020 - I am saddened by the recent deaths of affected pets and the trauma this has caused their owners. However, this is the absolute best thing that could happen to the pet food companies. I could not be more excited about the potential for seeing the much-needed changes in pet food manufacturing that may finally come about as a result of this “scandal” in which Menu Foods has recalled a portion of the dog and cat food it manufactured between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. This recall should serve as a huge and important warning.
The latest information is that 14 pet deaths have been linked directly to the recalled foods. Six of them were cats that died in the studies conducted by Menu Foods to confirm that their food was the culprit. Mortality and morbidity rate...

    Is Dog Food Gluten-Free?
Celiac.com 06/18/2022 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain brands and products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about pet products, especially pet food. Specifically, is dog food gluten-free and safe for your dog's diet?
Just like people, dogs can be sensitive to ingredients in their food, including gluten, and other known allergens.  As with food products for people, most mainstream dog foods are not gluten-free. Many contain grains, and or fillers that include gluten ingredients. Note: The FDA has expressed concerns about potential dangers of a grain-free diet for dogs, so please consider consulting a veterinarian before taking your pet grain-free, or gluten-free.
