    Celiac.com 03/30/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about alcoholic seltzer. Specifically, which brands of gluten-free seltzer are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

    Alcoholic seltzers have become extremely popular, and there are literally dozens of brands on the market. According to Wikipedia, "Hard seltzer, spiked seltzer or hard sparkling alcohol water is a type of highball drink containing carbonated water, alcohol, and often fruit flavoring. In the US the alcohol is usually made by fermenting cane sugar; sometimes malted barley is used."

    Bud Light Seltzer is sold in two varieties in Canada: malt-based at The Beer Store and vodka-based at the LCBO. The latter is not certified but is free from gluten ingredients! Please correct your statement.

    At a birthday picnic yesterday, saw and tried a Smirnoff Seltzer Red White and Berry.  The can was cryptic, not listing detailed ingredients, nor saying gluten free as I expected it to be.  It did say it was a "BEER" which was odd, and it also said made with malt,  but it was actually clear.  It did not say "gluten-removed or reduced".  The Smirnoff website is also unclear, so I am going to assume that it contains gluten, which my digestive system today has told me yes, it probably contains gluten.  Why is Smirnoff so inconsistent in making simple "Seltzers", and this one is not on anyone's list as either yes or no for gluten??

    How about AriZona Open Original Shared Link hard Seltzers? Says gluten free on the front, but says "CONTAINS ALCOHOL. BEER" on the bottom.

    I disagree. From what I have read, technically Corona Light meets the standards for gluten-free based on parts per million, yet it was still made from barley. I’ve been so excited to try the Simply Spiked seltzers… they say the alcohol is derived from sugar cane, then it says it’s a FMB…. So no, not safe for celiac.

    Dos Equis ranch water is not gluten-free, as it contains malt liquor, but there are different version of ranch water that are tequila based which are gluten-free, and we'll be doing an article shortly on them.
