Celiac.com 03/30/2021 - We get a lot of questions from celiac community members wondering if certain products are gluten-free. One question we see a lot is about alcoholic seltzer. Specifically, which brands of gluten-free seltzer are gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease?

Alcoholic seltzers have become extremely popular, and there are literally dozens of brands on the market. According to Wikipedia, "Hard seltzer, spiked seltzer or hard sparkling alcohol water is a type of highball drink containing carbonated water, alcohol, and often fruit flavoring. In the US the alcohol is usually made by fermenting cane sugar; sometimes malted barley is used."

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
The key to the answer is to find brands that are naturally fermented, or contain distilled alcohol, and do not include malted barley. Read labels and choose carefully.

I am very newly diagnosed with wheat and gluten allergies and am over 50 years old. Living gluten free for the past month has been challenging. Recently stopped at a restaurant with gluten-free menu options. Saw Ketel One Botanical spritzers on the menu. Had a sip and decided to read the label. The waitress said it was gluten free but the label told another story which left me confused. Gluten removed but they cant certify it to be gluten free?  Is it or isnt it?  Thanks.

It’s very unfortunate, but those of us allergic to actual wheat proteins (not the gluten proteins) often can’t consume or use gluten free products.  There are many ingredients that are often derivatives of wheat, but they are processed in a way that destroys most of the gluten proteins and because they come in under 20ppm of gluten are classified as gluten-free.  Unfortunately the lack of gluten dose not effect our reaction to the wheat is wheat protein allergic.  Some gluten-free wheat derived ingredients you will sometimes see in certified gluten-free foods are things like Dextrin, Glucose, multi dextrin, sugars, caramel colour vitamin E & about 40+ other derivatives that can be derivatives of wheat/soy/corn.  If the derivatives are gluten-free they are safe for celiacs, those with gluten intolerance… not always for those with an actual gluten allergy (different to celiac disease) & never safe for those with allergies to the wheat, soy or corn proteins (depending on what it was derived from)

I can't tell from their site, but here:

    https://goodboyvodka.com/our-method/

they say: "We start with a blend of California’s finest corn to give our vodka its superior taste. Using corn means that Good Boy Vodka is gluten free" so they likely are, but to be 100% sure contact them.

What about Karbach Ranch Water? I've been buying it and it says gluten free on the box. It contains malt, but I believe it's a rice malt.

Same with other flavors of Budlite and Truly, they are all labeled gluten free, I thought I was safe just checking labels?

Edit: checking labels, everything I buy is labeled gluten free, I see no ingredients listed that would tell me they contain barley or anything else with gluten, that said, every can (Ranch Water, Truly Strawberry Lemonade, Budlite Pineapple, Black Cherry, Cranberry, etc) says beer on it, but is also labeled gluten free. On the Ranch Water can, it clearly says fermented cane sugar and malted rice.

Am I safe? 'Cause now I'm panicking that I'm not even though I've been so careful to only buy gluten free labeled seltzers.

You might want to reach out to the companies to confirm the malt is made from rice, just to be sure.

    Yes.

I'm assuming the Karbach Ranch Water in all flavors must be safe because the original flavor is listed as okay on this site's Ranch Water article. I read on the can of the Ranch Water Hard Seltzer Agave Prickly Pear that it's gluten free and made with Cold Fermented Cane Sugar, and the last ingredient is Malted Rice. I have to wonder though, is there a different between flavors and is there a difference between regular Ranch Water and the Hard Seltzers.

I'm assuming the same with Bud lite because it also says fermented cane sugar and malted rice.

The Truly just says alcohol, but is labeled gluten free.

The bit I find confusing is that they all say beer, but considering there are gluten free beers on the market, it would appear that you cannot go just by the word beer but rather have to go by individual ingredients.

It's a lot to take in and because I have no symptoms with my celiac, I can't judge by that.

"Beer" can be made from almost any starchy plant but most beers are made from either barley or wheat and contain significant amounts of gluten. Gluten free beers are made non gluten-containing grains or other starchy plant materials. I don't drink it all anymore because it gives me migraines but I used to buy Red Bridge which was made from sorghum. Tasted just like beer to me but the real beer connoisseurs were negative toward it.

I haven't been able to find Red Bridge, but Utah is famous for being difficult when it comes to any type of alcohol, so it's difficult to find a lot of specialty items. That's why I've been drinking hard seltzers, but what confuses me is the 'beer' line that you see on hard seltzer cans, even those labeled gluten free and made from fermented sugar or malted rice. Everything I see on the Karbach Brewing Co. site says that the Ranch Waters are safe. I can't seem to get the contact us system to work though, to confirm.

Truly hard seltzers, all varieties, appear to be safe as well according to their website.

I haven't checked Budlite yet, but since it's made from fermented sugar and malted rice, I'm figuring the same. I can't imagine any of these companies would label a product gluten free, then proceed to have barley in their product.

I just wish I knew why, under the fine print on the cans, they all include the word 'beer'.

Concerning Budlite, I ran across this article earlier today: https://www.newsmax.com/newsmax-tv/anheuser-busch-bud-light-beer/2023/08/10/id/1130312/

So, I don't know how this might affect the product formulation if at all.

Yeah, I heard about this too. Funny enough, of the various seltzer brands, the Budlight isn't even my favorite. I emailed them anyway to be sure.

I already got a response from Truly and though they didn't answer my question about the beer word being on the label, they confirmed that they are gluten free, so I guess there's no concern there. I still can't get ahold of Karbach, system isn't working.
