Golden, Colorado (Wednesday November 17, 2010) The Denver Celiac Spruce Association is proud to announce Dr. Alessio Fasano as the speaker for its November Chapter Meeting. This meeting is open to all who want to attend and will be held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds at 15200 West 6th Avenue Golden, 80401. Doors open at 7 pm in Exhibit Hall 1& 2. (Please note the date change.)
Dr. Fasano is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director for the Center for Celiac Research, The Center has embarked on a five-year, multi-center blood screening study to establish the prevalence of this condition in the United States. So far, approximately 10,000 people have participated in the study. It was Fasano's research for the National Institute of Health that demonstrated the American Celiac Disease incidence rate of 1 in 133.
Celiac disease is the most common, but under diagnosed genetic, autoimmune disease. It is caused by ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and most oats), and is characterized by damage to the digestive system, problems with absorbing nutrients and can affect multiple systems of the body. Gluten Intolerance is thought to affect far more people, causing similar digestive symptoms and other health problems.
A brilliant and humorous lecturer, Dr. Fasano makes the science side of celiac disease very understandable. He's scheduled as a featured speaker at the CSA National Conference in Kansas City at the end of October.
The meeting is free to the public. Donations to the Gluten Free Food Bank of the Rockies, either non-perishable gluten-free products or cash donations, are requested.
