I Glutened Myself :(

I was grocery shopping today and got so hungry that I had the shakes. I'm newly diagnosed so it never even crossed my mind to check the label. I grabbed a protein bar at the store and ate it when I got to the car. I'm so sick and my DH on my scalp is itching like crazy. Does it become second nature to check every label? I can't believe I did that, it didn't even cross my mind at that moment.

So sorry that you got hit!  It happens to us all.   It will become second nature to you and you will know what you can and can't grab in situations like you had today.  I usually grab Sunmaid raisins and a banana or an orange juice until I can get home for a more substantial meal.

I would think it will be now, after being ill through eating gluten! Read everything twice, to make sure you are not eating something you shouldn't. Also, it would be a good idea to have an emergency gluten free snack bar of some description with you, so if you find yourself in the same situation, you don't just buy the first thing you see. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you both, I think I probably learned my lesson. I have been so extra careful since my diagnoses and it's as if I lost my brain this morning. I feel like I'm starting from scratch again, I had been gluten free and now I'm not. Grrr!

Newman's "oreo" cookies. "Wheat free" it said on the package. um yeah,

wheat free but not gluten free (barley malt was in them). sigh. Then

there was the rice from the Mediterranean place nearby where we often

get take-out. Yep, cooked in broth that had wheat in it.  And I'm sure

there are a few more that I'm not remembering. I've probably blocked

them out so as not to embarrass myself. :ph34r:

 

Yes, it does become habit to read every label. But there's a learning curve, and I still fall off of it sometimes. :P

I still don't have down all of the "other" names for gluten so I've just been not eating something if I don't recognize the ingredients. I just can't believe I did that. I'm SO itchy know, it's driving me nuts. Not to mention all of the other undesirable symptoms I've got going on. YUCK!

Other names? If its got wheat, its gotta be disclosed. Rye is kinda obvious as its normally used in breads and bagels. Barley? This too will be labeled, generally as a malt. This is all in the US, by the way. I've yet to see gluten "hidden" in things.

 

I always eat before i go shopping. When i don't eat and its been a while I get hit with a bad case of low blood sugar (shakes, jitters, etc).

I still don't have down all of the "other" names for gluten so I've just been not eating something if I don't recognize the ingredients. !

In the US and Canada - wheat has to day " wheat". Or what type of wheat it is like spelt. But those " fancy" wheat isn't used in most regular stuff. Barley will say " malt" or use the word barley. Rye isn't really in anything but Rye bread type things.

I always carry a packet of nuts or a nut bar like Open Original Shared Link

I guess I'm just very overwhelmed by all of the unknowns. :wacko:  And while I had the shakes this morning I was feeling frantic and needed to eat. I'm considered pre-diabetic so I get hit with low blood sugar sometimes and it seems to always hit in the grocery store check out line for some reason.

 

I picked up some Larabars today and stuck some in my purse and some in my van. Hopefully that will help next time I'm in that situation! :D

You'll get the hang of it.

And next time (I'm not kidding) grab gluten-free lunch meat. Generally (but always read the label) it's a safer bet and will probably hold you better than the bar. Add an apple or other fruit if you need sugar/carbs. All available in your friendly grocery store!

Good suggestions!! And I already know which lunch meats I can have. I have certainly learned my lesson, I can't wait for the kids to go to bed so I can curl up in a ball in bed.

I had a freak out moment today, after eating sushi last night...thought I was having a reaction but turned out no.

Yes it does! I'm volunteering in my Daughter's class tomorrow and dreading how I'll feel playing with 28 first graders!

What I'm trying to say is, if you are in the US, its illegal to " hide " wheat. If they use an anti- caking ingredient it would say anti- caking ( wheat). However, because wheat gets sticky when wet, it makes a horrible anti- caking ingredient.

Oh okay, gotcha!! I think I just look at all of the ingredients and get overwhelmed! I know I'll get it, it will just take time!

And if you can stand it, put ice packs on the itchy spots. That does help.

Oh poor thing! Been there, done that. I got glutened last week from a restaurant salad that must have CC'd me. The lesson is I still can't eat in restaurants without taking a big risk.

 

You will get to the point where you read EVERY label and don't even think twice about it. My friends all know now to hand me the can or package before they feed me lol....

I hope my family and friends get to that point as well. I have a very supportive husband but I get the feeling he thinks I'm being dramatic. I wish I could find a good documentary for him to watch so he can understand it a little better!

 

I'm terrified to eat in restaurants, there is one here in town that has a dedicated cookware and fryers. The owners have a child with Celiac.

      Hi everyone. I have a history of GI issues (gas, diarrhoea, pain, fatigue). In 2018 I had a a blood test that returned “weak positive” for Celiac (I don’t have access to this result) and in early 2018 I had an endoscopy. The dr said by appearance he believed it would be Celiac but biopsy said no. 2022 I had another blood test with results: Anti TTG IgA: 27 units (norm 0-20) high IgA: 0.9 g/l (norm 0.8 - 4.0) Endomysial antibodies: neg I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and had the same abnormal appearance but negative biopsies. All my dissachrides were low so I was referred on to a dietitian. I am still struggling with all my GI issues but now with nausea, brain fog and weakness/joint pain even following the low disaccharide diet with enzymes. I’m now pondering my previous results and see that all 3 low disaccharides can also be an indicator of Celiac. I’m struggling and so confused and wondering if anyone has any guidance or advice for me? Thank you

      I agree with @RMJ and unfortunately different celiacs have different trigger levels for gluten, and some celiacs have little or no symptoms at all when exposed to gluten.
