Question About Bowels (Tmi, Sorry!)

HI there! I have had chronic diarrhea as far back as 7th grade EVERY. TIME. I. EAT. To the point where I dont eat if I will be leaving the house any given day, I dont eat while on vacation pretty much with the exception of VERY small things so I dont die lol.

I went to a endo with a host of problems including thinning hair, my guy issues, heart palpitations (they did an EKG and heart monitor because they were happening in the office and everything checked out fine, they arnt the kind that kill you just annoy you I guess!).. My heart pounds every time I eat, along with palpitations. I am tired all the time, irritable, and I have had 10 miscarriages, brain fog...... So something is obviously going on. All of my blood work for metabolic disorders (thyroid, PCOS, ect) all came back normal. Everything always comes back normal..

The endo asked me a few weeks ago if I had ever been tested for gluten intolerance and I told her no... She said try a gluten free diet and see how I feel. So as of today, I am 2 weeks with no gluten. My husband and son are both likely celiacs (Doctor said she believes my husband is and will keep testing him even if the test comes back negative because she believes he does, he has thrown up since he was little every time he eats and swallows it back down, and recently his hands go numb. He eats a ton and doesnt gain a lb) so I joined this site years ago and have wanted to try gluten-free for both. I never really looked for me, while I always knew I was lactose intolerant, I never thought gluten for me, Im fat lol.

Ok, so anyways, its been 2 weeks. IMMEDIATELY my brain fog cleared. I am more alert, within days. Also, I have had NO diarrhea. None... But here is the thing... Im now having the opposite problem... SO here is my question... Why? LOL. Im eating lots of fruit and veggies. Does this mean I do react to gluten? Diarrhea has controlled my life as far back as I remember. To eat before I go to piano lessons at 2:30 in the afternoon 2 weeks in a row now and not be sick is amazing to me. But how do I now go to the bathroom? Is my diarrhea gone because I am not getting enough fiber or is my problem gluten? If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear! Thanks!

My guess would be a little of both. You chronic diarrhea is totally consistent with celiac disease, and eliminating gluten probably stopped it.

But, it can be difficult to get adequate fiber in the gluten-free diet. Much of the fiber in a typical western diet comes from wheat and oat bran. Pure oats can be a source, but you are too early to try that. Most recommend waiting at least six months before trying oats.

Thank you for the update.  So interesting to know how things are changing, when I was diagnosed I had very similar blood results but still had to have the endoscopy.  Glad you know where you stand.  As your father has celiac disease you probably already know a lot about it, but do contact us if we can help further.

But isn't it easier to just take a D3 supplement? Is the D light somehow a superior source? Links?

So the way it should be used is to take it before possible gluten exposure, so right before a meal at a restaurant take 1-2 capsules. Unfortunately taking it 1 hour or more after an exposure is too late.

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for sharing your detailed experience. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot over the past several months, and it’s understandable to feel frustrated after navigating unclear diagnoses and conflicting advice. Since you’ve found relief with a gluten- and corn-free diet, it might be worth continuing that approach for now, especially given your current commitments to culinary classes. You could consider working with a knowledgeable dietitian or a gastroenterologist who specializes in food intolerances and celiac disease to explore potential intolerances or other conditions without immediately reintroducing gluten. If confirming celiac disease is important for your long-term health management, you could plan for an endoscopy during a less busy period, ensuring you follow the gluten challenge protocol beforehand. In the meantime, prioritizing your well-being and avoiding known triggers seems like a practical step. Always advocate for yourself with doctors, and seek second opinions if needed—your health concerns are valid. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.
