Smelly Eggy!

Sorry, just had to share my excitement today. As no other peeps would appreciate the joy, especially at home.

Well, I ate an egg yesterday (1st egg in 5 months due to 'allergy') hives, having mainly survived on fruit and veg with rice. So... No allergy! Yeee ha! No tummy upset as far as I can tell, bit up on the wind but nothing too extraordinary!

Today... Fine... Then I just had a poop (I'm REALLY sorry to gross you all out) and oh my god the smell! My poop has not smelled for months, I've been smell free! But today, jeeez.... Is that the egg???? Surely not? But is it? And does that mean that I shouldn't eat them? Could it just be the flora in my gut complaining? :( don't understand really.

Any opinions welcome as to whether I should continue to eat eggs or not, pleeeeease help, I get lonely on my own day after day trying to figure this all out. I was ecstatic thinking I could reintroduce eggs... Now not so sure! My god, just thinking that my poor gut stinks like that, surely that's not right??!

Aaaaaaagh!

Eggs DO smell. If I bring a hard boiled egg to work and peel it here, the whole place smells bad for the rest of they day. They have a lot of sulpher and they smell. (But they taste so good!)

I don't think there is anything wrong with you at all. As long as you aren't getting hives or any other signs of an allergic reaction, keep some Lysol spray handy and enjoy!

designerstubble Enthusiast

Haha! Hi Bartfull, how you doing!! How's the corn situation going, any more joy?

You cheered me up, thanks. I feel like such a freak disclosing all my 'private' business! You gotta laugh eh?!

I'm SO glad you think it's ok to have stinky poop!! I swear I would've left the room if I'd been able to?!! Hahaha!! I don't think my celiac bum ever smelled so bad! I used to eat a lot of eggs actually before, but I never noticed any disgusting stench before??!! Strange. Also maybe it IS because I have been eating nothing but fruit & veg for so long, I guess I've been very pure.

No hives, no anything much really, (a rash on my inner arm that itches but not really linking them, at least not for the moment)...

Hmmm, I guess proteins generally cause smellier **** anyway?

Thanks bartful... I'm gonna try a scrambled egg in a few days... Fingers crossed. I'll remember to wear a gas mask!! Jeeeez!

Ps. Still haven't had courage to try corn, corn starch or anything corny. I'll be happy with eggs for a bit, mmmmm omelette wow, yum. :)

bartfull Rising Star

Hi right back! :)

I'm not going NEAR corn for now. I MIGHT have gotten corn starch back again like I did before, but corn hurts me too much to even think of trying it.  I miss the Udi's, but it's not worth the pain.

You heard I got white potatoes back? That's a biggie for me. I LOVE white potatoes. Going to try tomato sauce next i think. If I get brave in the kitchen (and find the TIME!), I'm going to make one of those cauliflower pizza crusts and put sauce, cheese, and some of the Mulay's gluten-free sausage on it. Of couse, now that summer is here I'm open seven days a week. I put in between 70 and 80 hours a week during summer. It's OK 'cause you can't call what I do WORK, it's more like non-stop fun, but it does eat into my "do something else" time.

I have always eaten a diet heavy on protein. I am an unabashed carnivore. I have always loved eggs too. But because I live alone, the only one I might offend is the cat.

designerstubble Enthusiast

That's awesome! Getting the potatoes back! I love potatoes too, fried nice and crispy with a little salt.... Mmmmmm!

Yeah, away from the corn for now, it's way to scary! Evil stuff! Anyway, what's a cauliflower pizza crust??? Sounds amazing??? Don't get anything like that here in UK! Funnily enough, tomatoes are next on my list, though they really put me into a big asthma attack along with all citrus, couldn't breathe, so I'm petrified. But imagine, being able to eat tomatoes!!! Wow. All the yummys with tomatoes in. All the sauces... Heaven!!

So Bartfull, 70-80 hrs??!! What do you do for a living?! You love your meat then! Ha! I come from an omnivorous family (Spanish/Hungarian), dunno what happened to me??! Fruit and veg girl!

designerstubble Enthusiast

Ps. Poor cat ;)

bartfull Rising Star

Somebody posted the recipe for the cauliflower pizza crust here on the board a week or two ago. It's probably in the recipe section. I'll see if I can find the link.

If you can't eat tomatoes you could always make a white pizza. You can use ricotta cheese or even cottage cheese instead of tomato sauce. Sprinkle some garlic and whatever other spices you like on it, then top with whatever meats or veggies you want. YUM! And I hate to say this, but if tomatoes and other citrus give you asthma attacks, please, don't even bother trying them!

70-80 hours a week is FUN if you are a musician who owns a music store.

I drink coffee and play guitar with my friends, I get to goof around with all kinds of great guitars (my favorite toys), I teach some incredibly talented kids (and adults), and generally have the time of my life every day. I honestly look forward to coming to work every day and to tell the truth, even in winter when I take Sundays off I usually end up coming down here for a few hours anyway. I'm a bit obsessed with the place but there is none so happy as an osessive person when she is up to her neck in her obsession.

Bartfull, I'm SO envious! I love guitar, I bought my acoustic 2 years ago, taught myself tab and struggle along! I'm crap!!!! But I wish I could get some lessons. With you!! You lucky lucky!

I'm a music lover too, I just wish I was talented. My husband also loves guitar and plays much better than I do, though we have different styles (my cousin is a top London prof flamenco guitarist, so I guess I tend to be more classical)... Funny to be having a guitar conversation on celiac forum! Wish I could come play with you but guess I just have to make do with my art! (prof artist).

Back to celiac (ugh), dont say that about tomatoes! Nooooooooooo! But yeah, see what you mean. But I used to eat tons of them before. We'll see I guess... I'm happy with eggs for now and a gas mask! Oh, and can't do cheese :( lactose intolerant, baaaaad. Dreadful accidental reaction to milk recently.

Where abouts are you Bartfull?

bartfull Rising Star

Hard cheeses don't have lactose, just casein. Have you tried cheddar? Some of the folks here who can't do milk or yogurt do just fine with hard cheese.

I'm in the most beautiful place on the planet, what the Lakota Sioux called "the center of the universe" - the Black Hills of South Dakota. It's where Mount Rushmore is although as spectacular as Mount Rushmore is, it's the LEAST spectacular thing in the Hills! Honestly, I have been all over the USA and there is nothing that can compare. As a matter of fact, it was during an 11,000 mile trip all around the country that I found it and I knew instantly this was where I belonged.

And before taking that trip I talked to some friends of my parents who had retired, bought an RV, and had spent the last few years traveling all around the country. When I asked them what THEY thought was the prettiest place they had been to, they both said "The Black Hills". I keep telling the folks here on the board they should all come see me. We can eat gluten-free pizza from Lintz Brothers (they are only an hour away), and then we can eat, uh...well, there IS that drawback. Not much good to eat here even for "regular" people. But I can get Udi's here, and Mulay's gluten-free sausage, and Pamela's baking mix. Oh yeah, and the health food store now carries Against The Grain pizza. We'll do OK.

designerstubble Enthusiast

Ooooooo hard cheese no lactose? Really? Didn't know that :) that will be why when I tried some cheddar (a small matchbox piece), it was ok ish, no bloat or gas just a few slight tummy pains.... I was shocked at this last reactions, only slightly sipped my sisters tea accidentally! Boom! Stuffed for a week.

Sounds lush where you are, obviously I have heard of Mount Rushmore. But the Black Hills sound magical... One day maybe... There's just so much to see on this planet. Unfortunately haven't managed US yet. But there's still time! I lived in the foothills of Las Alpujaras in Southern Spain for a long time... I hope to return one day.

So do manage to eat processed gluten-free food ok? We have prescription codex wheat here in UK... Don't fancy it much. Last bit of processed gluten-free and corn free food I had just irritated my guts. How long have you been dx? Can't remember, soz.

Thanks for link, gonna have a look now...

bartfull Rising Star

I used to be able to eat Udi's bread but lost it again when I lost cornstarch. Right now the only processed food I eat is the Mulay's sausage and a sugar sweetened (instead of corn syrup) vanilla ice cream. Well, cheese and butter are processed too, and I eat them. Other than that I only eat chicken, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower. Oh yeah, I eat a small handful of Planter's cashews just about every day too. I eat eggs of course but they are organic, from a farm down the road. I used to eat rice but I can't get the only brand that was safe for me anymore - the grocery store here stopped carrying it. I could eat bananas too, but I gave up on trying to get decent bananas here. Usually they rot before they turn yellow.

I'm lucky in that I don't mind eating the same thing day after day. I'm not fussy because I never was a good cook anyway, and I used to eat garbage food every day - burgers and fries, fried chicken, frozen pizza, and bags and bags of potato chips.

Celiac disease was a blessing in disguise. It got me eating healthy!

Juliebove Rising Star

I vaguely remember seeing some disgusting show meant for kids that explained poop and farts and their smells.  Said that some things produced smells that were worse than others.  And I think those were any form of animal protein, cabbage, onions and some spices.

Pegleg84 Collaborator

I can't do eggs either, cause they just make me feel like crud. I can't remember if they caused smelly poos, but it makes sense to me that a: if it's the first time you've had them in forever, your body might have had a bit of trouble with them. Maybe it won't be as bad the next time. But if you don't get a rash or your usual reactions, then I'd call that success!

On the weekend I had a couple small bits of cheese my boyfriend got and ooooooohhhh sooo goood. I didn't get my usual insta-headache (then again, was drinking wine so might not have noticed), though did have some mild bathroom troubles. Nothing serious. My "vertigo" has been a tad stronger the past couple days, but thats likely more time-o-the-month related. So, if I can have even a nibble of cheese every so often, that makes me happy!

(Bartfull, you'll be sad to hear that I -or rather my bf, who had just come into possession of a custom-made aluminium-necked guitar of absolute gorgeousness- noticed that there's a freaking crack in my classical! I don't play much, so it just sits in the corner and looks pretty... It should have been sitting in the case away from the elements instead. poor thing)

bartfull Rising Star

OW! If it is along the grain it really won't hurt anything. You could take a couple or three pieces of cotton fabric (not t-shirt material - use the non stretchy type men's dress shirts are made of), cut them with pinking shears, then use some hot hyde glue and put them across on the inside like band-aids. When the glue dries it will shrink the fabric and pull the crack together. You may need to humidify first to close the crack as much as possible first.

You'll probably want to take it to a luthier rather than try it yourself. He should be able to sell you a good humidifier. I prefer the kind that are long tubes that go inside the guitar. But if you don't want to spend the money just get a sponge, dampen it and squeeze it out, then put it in a yogurt container with holes punched in the top. At first, loosen the strings and place the container right in the soundhole. Later in you can just keep it in the case.

As for the eggs (to get back on topic), I have found that eggs cooked in the shell will sometimes make me nauseous, but eggs broken and cooked in a pan so they are exposed to air do not.

Pegleg84 Collaborator

And last night when I got home one of my strings had popped! ooh, the poor thing. I've put it in its case where it should be a bit safer. I believe my man has an extra humidifier (he has at least 6 guitars), so I'll try that. I'll get him to restring it for me after it's had time to rest. Poor little cruddy made in china classical. It had a pretty good sound to it though, so don't want to write it off. It was just extra embarrasing after oggling his new guitar. It's gooorrrrgeous (custom made by a guy in California, Electrical Guitar Company, mostly played by crazy rock/punk/metal types).

Ok. No more guitar talk. Thanks for the advice though.

For me eggs are ok baked in things, but not on their own or in large quantity.

designerstubble Enthusiast

Stinky old eggs!! Thanks my lovelys, great advice! I'm gonna try another egg this weekend, might do what Bartfull suggests, crack it, scramble it! Fingers crossed hey... Even an egg every week would be a welcome addition to my diet!

Muuuuuchas Gracias! 8D

bartfull Rising Star

I think scrambled would be stinkier than over easy. Of course personally, I just LOVE runny yolks. I used to make the BEST egg sandwiches. I used cheap hamburg buns with tons of butter on both sides, egg with runny yolk, lots of extra sharp cheddar melted on them, two slices of bacon cooked crispy and crumbled. You had to eat them upside down so you could peak on the butter only side to see where the yolk was so you could eat carefully. Small bites only or the yolk would squirt out and get all over everything.

Now I can't do the cheap buns or any bread at the moment, and I haven't found any corn-free bacon yet either. I cook some rice, melt a LOT of cheddar in it, cook my over easy eggs and mix them in with the hot rice/cheese mixture. Not the same but still pretty tasty.

Pegleg84 Collaborator

I used to cook eggs into rice all the time. with minced veggies, chilli pepper, so good!

An egg a week is a good goal, even if you have to put up with a brief stink.

designerstubble Enthusiast

Just a little update on my stinky poop! Not that anyone really wants to know, but just for those that may have a similar problem and read this! Tried another egg last weekend... Stinky bottom not so stinky!! Perhaps because I scrambled them? So... Looking better, gonna try again this week... After a month will up to 2 eggs... Shocking!

Pegleg84 Collaborator

that's good news! Less stink and more eggs. Enjoy!

Could be the Ozampic is masking your expected symptoms.  Like an analgesic masks pain.  Qzampic slows digestion to lower the rate glucose enters the intestine to slow its effect on glucose level.  It seems it might also slow down the gluten entry into the intestine, reducing its trigger level for the antibodies.  Ultimately the damage from gluten is the same, just not as fast so the pain is less.  Sourdough bread has less gluten.  Ozampic siows its entry.

You can sell it better if the whole family does gluten free.  If he does have Celiac Diease, it is genetic so either you, your spouse, or both have a 40% chance of also having Celiac.  There are over 200 non classic symptoms also caused by celiac disease not often considered by doctors. Joint pain, muscle pain, muscle cramps, osteoporosis, and allergies for starters.

Hello @MHavoc, thank you for your question and welcome to the clinic. First, has the contstipation abated with the GFD? If your are pursuing further diagnostics you must continue to eat gluten. Each lab has their own reference range for their test, but they indicate an H for high.  Typically anything above 11 is considered positive. Mild chronic inflammation (gastritis) can interfere with intrinsic factor for B12 leading to low B12 causing low MCHC (anemia). So what is causing your gastritis?  A high tTG IgA level generally indicates potential gastrointestinal problems most commonly associated with celiac disease.  Although the biopsy is the Gold Standard for diagnosis, not finding damage in the biopsy does not rule out Celiac Disease. It means they did not find damage where they looked.  The small intestine is over 20 feet long. Many here have been blood positive and biopsy negative, it just delays the diagnosis until you have enough damage to find and fit their diagnostic profile. The Ttg-iga is not only sensitive (90%) but highly specific (98%) and won’t show positive until the damage is severe.  It is estimated that 40% of first degree relatives of diagnosed Celiacs have undiagnosed Celiac Disease, so your sister is a big risk factor in whether you have it. Are You Confused About Your Celiac Disease Lab Results?  This article explains it better and is quite readable. Celiac Disease can cause deficient vitamin D.  Low vitamin D compromises the immune system.  Any other symptoms? liver enzymes?  Recent cold or flue? Celiac Disease and the malabsorption it causes through vitamin and mineral deficiencies can elicit symptoms not usually associated with Celiac Disease. Case in point maybe your gastritis and anemia.

As with most of the people that come here, I have questions and need perspective/info from this wonderful community.  Some background, started having severe constipation that would not abate even with softners (not really fun to talk about), so I was able to finally get in to see my primary and she scheduled some blood work.  One of things she wanted to test for is Celiac Disease due to my sister having celiac disease since a young child. Here are my test results: MCHC = 31.4 so considered slightly low TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE AB, IGA = 78.8 H So with that result, I was scheduled for an endoscope for confirmation of celiac disease, but I am very confused with the results: Diagnosis 1. Duodenum, biopsy: -No pathologic alteration. 2. Stomach, biopsy: -Mild chronic inflammation with reactive epithelial change -H. pylori not identified on immunostained section. -No intestinal metaplasia or dysplasia I am now scheduled to meet with a GI Specialist from the Celiac team, but that won't be until after the New Year.  I would appreciate thoughts about the biopsy report to understand whether it confirms the celiac disease as was indicated by the blood test results. I have been gluten free for two weeks and it is a very difficult adjustment for me as an older 50+ person.
