Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows of the products I can get from the deli's in Coles and Woolworths that are gluten-free?

I am thinking of shaved chicken breast etc and other luncheon meats. Also I'm assuming the roast chickens they have are not gluten-free?

Thanks

Hi Susan's Mum,

Every Woolworths / Safeway shop in Australia has a large red plastic covered folder called the "Nutritional Information Folder". One copy is located in the deli. The other in the Manager's office. It is updated regularly (I think around once a week) and comes under their QA system.

It lists all the products that do not arrive in the shop already labeled, and lists all the nutritional information, ingredients lists, and MANDATORY WARNINGS about allergens including products or manufacturing aids derived from wheat, rye, barley, or oats.

All you have to do is ask to see the folder, they even provide note-paper in the front for you to make your own notes. If you have difficulty finding your way around it ask the staff to help you.

A few things to ask about to get you used to using the folder.

Hash Browns, Potato Gems. One contains no Gluten, the other does not.

Having said all this, the weakest link in the chain is the cross contamination that occurs when they slice the product in the shop. Also Hash Browns and Potato Gems are often on adjacent trays, so the crumbs from one may contaminate the other.

Because of these problems I usually stick to Pre-Packaged deli items like Hans smallgoods most of which are clearly labeled "Gluten Free". Their range is increasing all the time.

Alan

I don’t think it matters much if you trust the supplier, I get them from a Welsh company maesyffin mushrooms but I think the guy there has retired from growing now and just resells eu imports so it’s probably the same mushrooms he uses to make the tinctures as the company you posted. It’d probably be cheaper to buy dried and make your own tincture.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Have others experienced LUQ and L sided back pain when on gluten? Could gluten be irritating the pancreas to cause the slight rise in lipase?

Wow! I'd be interested to know where you get the tinctures. You can DM me if you wish. There's a Spanish company ... hifasdaterra ... who make high quality medicinal mushrooms in capsule form.

Jason, I have a bone to pick with your terminology. There is "gluten intolerance" which I believe is synonymous with celiac disease and then there is "gluten sensitivity" which comes from Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or NCGS for short. It is true, however, that there is still a lot of inconsistency in the use of these terms.
