Just been diagnosed and joined. As there's no Introduction section,  thought I would do it here.

 

63, married to a woman younger than my daughter with a daughter young than my Grand Daughter. Cancer survivor and retired. 

 

Born within the sound of Bow Bells, London so a Cockney. Lived in the Czech Republic for 16 years nearly.

Actually there is a section for people to introduce themselves, not that it matters a whole lot.  I'll put a link in for it here:

But the gab chat section is probably just as good a place for saying hello.  Maybe better.  If it's not a moderator can move the thread for ya.  Just hit the red report thread button at the bottom of the post and ask if they can move the thread.  Or leave it right here, no matter mind.

Some starting the gluten-free diet tips for the first 6 months:

Get tested before starting the gluten-free diet.
Get your vitamin/mineral levels tested also.
Don't eat in restaurants
Eat only whole foods not processed foods.
Eat only food you cook yourself, think simple foods, not gourmet meals.
Take probiotics.
Take gluten-free vitamins.
Take digestive enzymes.
Avoid dairy.
Avoid sugars and starchy foods.
Avoid alcohol.
Watch out for cross contamination.

Karen - quick question - now that I'm using an iPad all my celiac email replies & notifications go to my junk mail. They are NOT JUNK! Ever hear of that problem?

Hi Paul and welcome to the funny farm!  

 

I think I got you beat.  Let's see, Dads 3rd wife younger than my brother.  my daughter graduated with her Uncle and Hubs nephews younger than he is.  Oh, and I'm older than my Hubs too.

Sorry for missing all the replies. I have no excuse other than didn't get the emails. 

 

GFinDC thank you for the advice. I'm a cancer survivor and been getting check ups since I beat it and that was over 4 years ago. The iron and Iodine levels in my blood were always a problem. It seems now we know why. Only narrowed it down to Celiac disease in the last month. Now getting Iron infusions and seeing the Gastronomy Specialist on Thursday.   

 

It seems I wasn't a great eater of wheat based foods like breads and cakes, except for biscuits and sauces. I can't drink Alcohol due to the radiation burning out my saliva glands. I do like yoghurt and similar foods. 

 

The dogs name is Rajah, 2.5 years old and he's lovely if a bit crazy. He looks tough, in truth a very friendly dog. He will bark on command or when he wants something like attention, loves ice cream, kids who play with him or feed him. Great with very little children, just stands and lets them do anything to him.

      they gone down alot since my diagnosis .  the ttg test was done in a hospital it still not in the normal range 2 yrs later. the last time went up by the one before a little. maybe it just takes more time really trying to be careful i need to look at everything i eat to make sure

      After my 3 year old daughter's diagnosis, we all got tested. My 5 year old son also came back positive with number 12x the upper limit.  We will confirm with another tTG and the other 2 tests in the panel.  He has zero symptoms that I have noticed. Maybe occasionally vomiting. He does have asthma. He's kind of an a**hole sometimes but also he's 5. He has SO much energy. Like miles and miles of biking, running, gymnastics. Never stops. Eats great, normal growth. It was comparing my daughter to him that made me push to figure out what was wrong with her!  Is it possible for a tTG test to just be totally wrong?

      I'm heading to the UK for a vacation the end of this month on a tour with Road Scholar. I haven't been out of the US since my diagnosis so I'm a little concerned about exposure to gluten during my travels. Most of our meals are provided by the tour. Either the hotels we are staying at, or places we will visit. Road Scholar is aware of my dietary needs as well. Any helpful hints about navigating the restaurants in England is greatly appreciated. Also are there any medications out there to help mitigate the effects of exposure to gluten? Thanks in advance.
