Floaters - And I'm Not Talking About Vision

Sorry if this is TMI and gross.  But if I can't ask you guys, who can I ask?

I've been gluten-free for 2 months.  And my poop still floats.  Isn't it supposed to sink?  Am I just expecting too much too soon?

Normal color, normal consistency, normal size, normal intervals (one to three times daily).  No noticeable undigested food - except for the occasional nut that I didn't chew well enough.

I eat insanely healthy - no junk food, very little processed food, tons of veggies.  I do still eat some dairy but that's never been a problem for me.  I take a probiotic and digestive enzymes.  I get good fats (fish, flax, and borage oil capsules (all together in one), a little butter now and then, olive oil) - but no bad fats that I know of.

Edit:  I do eat ranch salad-dressing on my salad everyday, which I would consider to be a bad fat.  Forgot about that.  (Yes, it is definitely gluten-free.)

IMHO (and sadly,  I confess I know a lot about poop!) your "product"  sound perfectly normal to me.

Floating poop is not a sign of any problem that I know of, so CONGRATS!

(now if you had steatorrhea, then you'd have a problem.)

Keep up the good work! :)

Thanks IH.  I was assuming that floating meant there was still too much (undigested) fat in it.

might be all the good fats. But if everything else looks normal, no problem!

I've got the other kind of floaters too.

Excellent suggestion!  I checked and it does have Lipase.

do you take it with each fat containing meal?

I don't take it with snacks (nuts, yogurt, etc.) but with any sizeable meal, yes.  And I take it in the morning when I take all of my vitamins - including the fish/flax/borage (Omega 3-6-9) capsules.

You need to take the DE each time you eat. They are not stored in the body, so taking them in the morning won't help at all with your evening meal.

You also need to "up" or "down" the dose relative to the meal. E.g. I eat 5 meals a day. I take 2 with each of the 4 smaller meals and 4 with my main meal. You will need to find what works for you (It's not necessarily what works for me!). You will know if you have taken too many because it will cause heartburn/indigestion.

Throw me into the eye floater boat too. They are the worst! According to my eye dr I am a bit young to have them so it must be celiac related. My tissue is actually starting to detach hoping it gets better not worse

I've been gluten free for almost 5 months and mine are just now starting to sink. I still have trouble digesting fats. I should probably start the enzymes as well

IrishHeart Veteran

Honestly, guys, I sometimes have floaters--it's not always bad....sometimes, it's a sign of good fiber!

I mean, who says they have to sink?

Seriously, I have read a lot about poop (never thought I'd type THOSE words lol)

and the last book I read about GI health said floaters were not necessarily a bad thing,

especially if the color, texture, size, frequency and ease of expulsion is okay..

(omg, we have the damnest convos on here!.)

and I never really wanted to know all this crap, but I do. do.

(yeah, I said it. ) lol

IrishHeart Veteran

PS The two most common causes of floating stools are excess gas and malabsorption of nutrients.

so, it is entirely possible that Coots is still in recovery stage and so, she needs to take the enzymes.

I guess I am trying to say, please do not worry too much!

Is it possible that the Ranch dressing contains aspartame?  When I was ingesting it I had floaters and other issues, too.  Aspartame is not recommended for anyone, especially those with AI diseases.

Do you girls know you are not exactly normal?  I'm pooped out from reading all your antics.  ^_^  Now I must go and stack the stools before they start dropping.  So, scat!  Outta my way!

I doubt very much that it contains any gluten. It works by producing an artificial blood clot, mixing 2 or more proteins found in the natural blood clotting cascade. These are refined from human blood donations. It comes in 2 vials that are mixed immediately before use and clot quickly.

This literally happened to me today I had gluten after not eating it for over 6 months doing the elimination diet has I'm trying to get help with a diagnosis I ate gluten a few days ago and then stopped  because I went for my blood test today unfortunately it's not enough has I've now learned from some helpful people on this forum it has to be a lot longer before a test but my food today was really salty I just thout it was me because I'd deviated off my diet but I definitely tasted my  food  salty so that's a very intriguing investigation for me now thankyou for the post

Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:
