Mercury Toxicity?

Hey guys! I have not been on the forum in forever! I was diagnosed with Celiac in March 2013. I was feeling better for a while with the gluten-free diet. However, now I have all kinds of crazy symptoms despite my carefulness to remain gluten-free. My symptoms point to mercury toxicity. A dentist friend of mine who lives in Colorado lead me in this direction. I had my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with composite filling in October 2013. Again, I eventually began to feel better. However, the symptoms came back and are actually worse. I have had to go to ER even because the pain has gotten so severe. I have now decided to put myself through mercury detox under the guidance of my friend (who also suffers from mercury toxicity). I'm just VERY curious as to others' thoughts/opinions...and mainly if anyone else has experienced anything similar to this. I would appreciate ANY help!!! Thank you!!!!!

I really don't know much about this. I would suggest you consult a physician and follow a medical protocol. I'm not sure what a person can really, safely do if you have Mercury poisoning. I think that can be a pretty serious illness.

Looks like the kind in dental fillings comes out the far end if swallowed. So I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

Do you eat a lot of fish? Just a thought.

I second what has already been said by Kareng.  If you haven't already been to a doctor for this specific issue, I implore you to go get checked out before you start with your self treatment.  Unfortunately, mercury toxicity is extremely rare and I don't know if there will be any others on the forum with the same experience.

I did eat tilapia...maybe 2-3x/month...Since deciding to try this detox I have stopped. If you start reaching mercury toxicity and amalgam fillings...it is really is crazy the research that supports them having a negative impact on your health...physically and neurologically...

*researching not reaching...I hate typos!

I have been to one doctor who has directed me toward a similar path...Honestly, I live in NE Mississippi...We do not have many doctors around here that truly understand these types of conditions...I was actually the first Celiac patient that my doctor had encountered...this has always been discouraging for me..:

If you really have issues with mercury, you should be tested by a physician and treated. Did you work near mercury vapors? Did you consume copious amounts of large fish? If you do have mercury poisoning, it has crossed the blood brain barrier and over-the-counter unregulated supplements will not help. Small amounts in amalgam fillings probably has not affected you. How are your kids? Because if it were amalgams (and I do not think so), they would have severe neurological problems passed on by you when you were pregnant. I am guessing that they are just fine.

You already have one autoimmune disorder and the learning curve for the cure can be steep especially when you have a 2, 3, and 4 year old running around. Moms who do not have a severe illness, like celiac disease, have gone crazy with three cute little rug rats! Some people take years to heal, especially if you have consistent glutenings. Not that you have, but it is a thought. Each glutening can delay the healing process. So, back to the autoimmune disorders. Have you ruled out RA, lupus, Hashi's, type 1 diabetes, etc. ? Once you get one autoimmune disorder, you can develop more.

Rule out those before starting any dangerous chelation treatments that you diagnose yourself.

I hope this helps.

Tilapia is a very small fish. It is on the safe list posted by the government.

I have been tested for Lupus...when I first got tested for Celiac...but none of the others...I'm not sure I have any of the other symptoms? My current symptoms are fatigue after eating anything, daily nausea, joint pain all over, abdominal cramping...

You can definitely seek out additional autoimmune testing.  Those things can pop up even if a previous test was negative, and especially since you have had a sudden onset of symptoms again, it would definitely be worth knowing.  Rheumatologists do a ton of tests to rule other things out, as well, because there are many diseases/conditions that have similar symptoms.

jamiecasabellameeks Apprentice

Wait...no RA either...got checked for that.

cyclinglady Grand Master

Okay, before you request those other autoimmune tests, are you eating dairy? Milk can cause intestinal damage, affect your joints, cause fatigue and make you nauseas. So can other foods that you might be intolerant to like eggs, corn, soy, etc. have you kept a food journal?

cyclinglady Grand Master

How is your gallbladder? Have you had a followup endoscopy to see if you are healing? It is recommended after a year.

jamiecasabellameeks Apprentice

Well I have been eating dairy until yesterday...

jamiecasabellameeks Apprentice

It's been years since my gallbladder was checked...It was fine the last time, though. I have not had f/u upper endoscopy.

cyclinglady Grand Master

I say no dairy in ANY form for the next three months. Research lactose, casein or whey intolerances. That is a good place to start since most people with celiac disease develop a temporary lactose intolerance due to damaged villi. Do not forget that you can sustain damage to villi from milk but that is rare!

If symptoms persist, do check your gallbladder for not only for stones but to test for how it functions (squeezes). That is the HIDA scan.

jamiecasabellameeks Apprentice

Just curious...if you have a lactose intolerance but have not had it in 3 days...should you still feel sick from the effects of the LAST time you had it? Like still nauseous etc...(do I even make sense lol?)

It takes me about 4 days to feel better after eating a food that I do not tolerate.  My nurse caregiver says that it takes about 4 days for the antibodies to die down.  Three days seems to me within a reasonable time.

My dentist removed my mercury fillings very carefully.  He used what he called a "rubber Damn" to avoid having mercury go down my throat.  This felt like he wedged a balloon between my teeth.  He also didn't remove all of my fillings at once, but left time between them.  There must be reasons for the care he took in this.  I hope similar cautions were taken for you.

mercury overload  can be  dangerous.....Did  your  dentist  use  the  mercury  protocol when  removing  your  mercury fillings? Many  dentist  just  drill out  the  old  mercury filling  without  precautions causing the patient  to  end  up  with  a lot  of  medical issues....WE  all have  lead & mercury in our  systems,  it is when we  get  an overload  the problems  begin....

Our  son  went  through a mercury/lead  detox  for  months.....we  used  a  specialist  for  the  treatments ( IV injections,)  Some  made  him  pretty sick  ....Please  seek  a specialist  in this  field......

jamiecasabellameeks Apprentice

The dentist did use proper precautions. I also have many of the symptom of yeast overgrowth and candida...which apparently go along with mercury toxicity? I am not doing the chelation (sp?) I'm taking multiple supplements, along with IMD (intestinal metals detox)...

cyclinglady Grand Master

Jamie,

No offense, but have you even read and understood everyone's comments on mercury toxicity? You have three kids that need a mom. You should be under a medical doctor's supervision. I know you live in MS, but drive to New Orleans or Memphis for a consult.

Regarding candida, unless you have something like AIDS or chronic thrush in your mouth or vagina from taking antibiotics daily for years, you probably do not have an issue with yeast. More than likely you have a problem with MILK because folks with celiac disease usually have milk issues. It costs nothing to test that theory and it is safe. Just take a calcium supplement to protect your bones. With three tiny children, you probably can not get a good handle on a gluten free diet or you are giving it your all to you family (as mothers do).

There are no quick fixes for celiac disease.

Yes...I said I have seen a doctor in Nashville. I also have a friend who is a dentist in Colorado that is going through the same thing. I ordered the mercury test her naturopath suggested and am going to take it from there. I was just curious if anyone else had similar experiences...I am here to tell you it is not gluten though...I do not think I could be more careful than I am...If you would read about candida...it goes hand in hand with mercury toxicity...Mercury feeds yeast...So you do not necessarily have to have the conditions you stated...Especially if it's in your gut...

This is just my personal opinion, and it probably isn't worth much to you, but.... I wouldn't let a dentist diagnose or treat me for anything but dental things. I would read info from reputable researchers/ medical centers on mercury poisoning and yeast. Theses issues are not that common. I would hate for you to hurt yourself with the treatments or mis- diagnose something serious or easily fixable. Trying to be dairy free for a few weeks is cheap and easy and shouldn't cause you any harm.

I think that is what everyone here is trying to say.

However, it is your money and your body...... I wish you good luck and good health. If we can help you with any issues related to Celiac, please let us know. :)

Wow....you've got a lot coming at you! I just thought I would pipe in and further muddy the waters   -- yesterday I was reading an article that was addressing the increase in incidence of lyme disease in the southern US. Big numbers in the northeast and mid-western states and in southeastern Ontario have been known for some time, but suddenly this disease is appearing, quite noticeably, in the south. Your symptoms rang a bell, so I thought I'd chime in. Wow, lots to deal with -- I do hope you get this all figured out.

Hi Emily, What you described is very similar to what I experienced in coping with Celiacs. I think my first symptoms started when I was about 3 and I wasn't diagnosed until I was almost 70. I got along OK util I was about 30  when I began to have more problems that the Drs thought was an autoimmune problem that they couldn't identify. Then I worked in medical labs in Bolivia for 8 months and returned to the US with more problems such as sensitivities to chemicals and increasing food intolerances. I had always had canker sores in my mouth and nose but have not had any now  since I went strictly gluten free. Before I was gluten-free I became very sensitive to hot peppers and then I could not eat anything spicy such as cinnamon, turmeric or black peppers. I have not eaten any nightshades for years. No corn or soy.  My diet now is lamb stew with rice, squash, green beans, chard, kale, collards with salt. Then eggs , chard, spinach, black beans, summer squash, asparagus, rice and salt. I eat peanuts for snacks. I have been eating nuts but may have to stop. Coconut is OK but too much sugar is not.  I am very cautious about adding back foods to my diet but hope to add back small amounts of turmeric. Take care.

mcg Vit. B12Hi dlaino  - You mentioned that you are now feeling sick all the time. If this is making you miserable you might want to go to your health provider, describe what you are feeling and your symptoms so that theySome of the people here can give you useful advice about taking supp;ements and the amounts you could take to improve your overall health. I have increased my Vit. B12  can help you figure out what is happening. Just because you have gluten intolerance does not mean that your current problems are related to that. Some of the people here can give you useful advice about supplements and how much to take for improved health. I recently upped my Vit. D3 from 50 mcg to 150 mcg and now take either 500 mcg or 1000 mcg of vit. B12 sublingual daily instead of once a week.                                    Take care

Welcome to the forum, @Tyoung! It is possible that you are experiencing some kind of gluten withdrawal but I would thing that would have started to subside by now. There are a couple of possibilities that come to mind. One is the polysaccharide ingredients that are typically found in prepackaged "gluten-free" wheat flour facsimile foods. If you read the ingredient lists of such foods you will usually find things like guar gum and xanthan gum. Their function is to give the product a texture similar to wheat flour but they are hard to digest and give many celiacs digestive issues. I mention this not knowing if you are relying on prepackaged gluten free food items to any extent or are just choosing carefully from mainstream naturally gluten free food items. Another is that your body is just going through adjustment to a major dietary change. Wheat is a significant component to the typical western diet that supplies certain nutrients and some fiber that has now been withdrawn suddenly. Are you experiencing any constipation? Also be aware that foods made from gluten-free flour are typically devoid of nutritional value. Wheat flour is mandated by government regulations to be fortified with vitamins but gluten-free flours are not. It can be smart to compensate for this with vitamin and mineral supplements. Still another possibility is that in addition to being gluten intolerant, your also have other food intolerances. One small study found that 50% of celiacs reacted to dairy like they do gluten. That number may be on the high side in reality and more research needs to be done. However, it is true that dairy intolerance is very common in the celiac community. Another common "cross reactive" food is oats. There are certain foods whose proteins closely resemble gluten and cause the same reaction. About 10% of celiacs react to the protein "avenin" in oats like the do the protein gluten. You might try eliminating dairy and oats for a few weeks and see if your symptoms improve.

Before my diagnosis I would consider myself pretty much asymptomatic other than a few flare ups of what I previously thought were ibs symptoms. After having iron deficiency as well I had a positive blood test and EGD. I have now been gluten free for about a month but my symptoms have gotten worse. I now have bloating, acid reflux, and pain in the upper abdomen on and off most days. I am pretty positive I am not being glutened as we overhauled our whole house to be gluten free and haven’t eaten out since the diagnosis. Has anyone else experienced a worsening of symptoms after going gluten free? Will it subside? Or is there something else I should be concerned about. Thank you!

That is strange.  Other pages talk about testing. The one thing I like about GFCO is that the handbook for their certification process is available on their website.  I may not agree with the whole process, especially the reduced testing, but at least I can see what the process is. I wish the other certifying organizations would publish their processes. GFCO 2024 manual
