Synthroid Revisited...other Brands Better?

I take 100 mcg of Synthroid and have for years. Since my celiac diagnosis last fall, it's the only medicine that the manufacturer won't guarantee as gluten-free. I spoke with the company today, and the rep confirmed that they do not test and would not guarantee the medicine to be gluten free. She told me to speak to my physician about it. DUH.

 

Yes, I'll call my doc tomorrow BUT....for those of you who take Synthroid, does it seem to bother you? Have you switched to another medication? I had bad celiac test results at my four month follow-up so I'm being extra double careful , as I now know I should've been before with medications. The generic Synthroid was simply abysmal, so that's not an option for this gal!

Synthroid may very well be gluten-free....just because they do not test their product does not mean it contains gluten. I personally have never used Synthroid as I prefer a hormone replacement of both T3 and T4.  I use Nature-throid and have never had a problem with it and I am extremely sensitive to tiny amounts of gluten.

 

Having a "bad" Celiac panel done at the 4 month mark means nothing....unless the numbers went back up and you become symptomatic.  It may take much longer for your antibodies to normalize so I wouldn't sweat that.  If you feel uncomfortable with Synthroid, then you'll have to look for another replacement hormone.  The natural hormones like Armour and Nature-throid are gluten free but some doctors will not prescribe them.  They are biased towards T4 hormone only...which can be a problem.

Well before my dx, my doctor switched me to the generic levothyroxine. Mine is made by a company called Mylan and, at least 6 months ago, it was on a gluten free list.

There is also more than one manufacturer of generic synthroid, if you can figure out which you had before, you can try another.

      Thank you for this! "Medical" advice, and I use the term loosely, is so rampant and so unproven nowadays (I even have relatives that fall down these rabbit holes and are shocked I don't follow.), so I am skeptical of everything. I appreciate the confirmation of my suspicions that this was more hearsay. Onward with my rice and corn. lol

      Welcome to the forum, @RDB7918393! For some folks, gluten reactions are delayed but I would not think symptoms delayed  of a week or more out would be due to a gluten reaction. Twenty four hours or so but not 7-14 days. I would suspect something else is going on. Eating out is well-known to be the number one sabotaging activity of the gluten-free life style.

      I was diagnosed with Celiac about 10 months ago after having on and off morning stomach cramping and loose stool that only occurred like once a month. So I don’t get immediate reactions…more if build up reactions. I do my best to be gluten free but hard when on vacation and going to restaurants to fully trust cross contamination problems. I find that if I’m cross contaminated, I don’t get a reaction til about a week or two after. The reaction is stomach cramping morning only with flaky stool. Does anyone else have such a delayed reaction like a week or two after being glutened? Or should I go for more testing to see what’s going on.

      Good morning, I saw that a lot of people were asking wether Polly-O products are gluten free. I just called them and all their cheeses are gluten free! Just wanted to let anyone know.    if you still want you can give them a call.

      Thank you very much Scott I am glad that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I am just very impatient and I want to heal asap. I apreciate your honesty in this isnce I am getting absolutely knowhere with the medical system. A year or more? God help me this is hard. But, I am so grateful that I found a site like your that can help me and put my mind at ease in all of this. An you started this and you are ghelping alot of us get through this little by little. I thank you for starting this. Is there a cure coming that you know of? I am in Canada and there is nothing here.   Sophia
