Is It Possible For A Dx Celiac To Not Have A Problem With Barley?

Monday I went grocery shopping after getting some heavy duty painkillers at the Dr for a separate issue. (don't worry, I didn't drive) Anyway, never shop for gluten free groceries when you are stoned. I bought two boxes of Kellogs Cocoa Krispies. In my head they were Moms Best Coco Krispies, which are gluten free. Kelloggs however, contains barley malt flavoring.

Tuesday I ate two huge bowls (still apparently under the influence? I dunno)

A couple of hours later my daughter comes screaming "Mom! Did you eat these? They have gluten in them!" 3 celiacs in the house, we know our stuff. Unless we are drugged.

But...I had ZERO reaction. Not an ache, or pain or itch or even a fart. All 3 of us had positive blood work and biopsies done 3 years ago, so I know it didn't go away...(in my dreams). And any time I have had any cross contamination with wheat, I barf my guts out. An accidental restaurant enchilada that was "so good I cant believe it is corn! (because it was wheat!") sent me to the hospital for three days last year. Is it possible for a celiac to be bothered by only certain forms of gluten? Is barley gluten less potent? Or is malt flavoring superheated or something? I'm kind of baffled...

Maybe Barley may be less "potent"  

Maybe The amount of barley in that cereal may be very tiny.

Maybe something else you are taking is messing with the production of antibodies

Maybe Its a full moon and you turned around 3 times in a clockwise fashion?   :D

 

 

Probably just that there isn't much gluten in them.

I have different reactions. The one time I got accidentally CC'd with barley I ended up halfway to the bathroom (I'm maybe 10-12 feet from the door) curled up in a ball because I couldn't make it all the way. Not for what we all assume either. My husband quickly noticed my distress and grabbed the nearest thing at hand before I barfed all over the carpet. I was there for a while before I could get up. The "other" came later that evening. Every time it has been wheat it's been immediate (within 20-30 minutes) D that makes me think I won't have any guts left when I'm done. I don't know what the difference is/was. I don't rightly care. Gluten is gluten is gluten, and even without a reaction it damages our intestines and that will eventually cause problems.

Hmm...so I probably shouldn't conduct an experiment with Whoppers and Ovaltine....unless it is a full moon. Gotcha.

Wheat, rye & Barley   of  course  you know  are off limits.... It may have not  hit you this time  but  with  continued  use   it  may  be   the  worse  stuper  /mess  you ever  got yourself  into.... just  another  reason  why  using  drugs  is BAD!!!!!!  I hope  you  don't  suffer  any reaction & I'm  hopeful  you will not let  that happen to you  again.... mistakes  are good  if we learn from  them....

 whoppers & ovaltine,,  can't  say I miss  either  of those  but  I  think we  all  have  a  couple  of  goodies we  would  love  to  savor  just  once  again.....maybe on  the  last  day of life  on  earth!!!!  (wink)

Well, if I could only have one gluten back, it would be wheat, not barley. And I do have plans to start inhaling twinkies the instant the sky starts falling!

and yes yes, drugs are bad. Pain is worse however. In that instance anyway.

My  gluten-free  last day  eating  will be  a greasy  pizza  hut  pan pizza  &  a local bakery makes  a roll called  a kiffel....

Now, I make  twinkies  all the  time  I will share the recipe  with you  if  you want..  The twinkie pan isn't  costly.....so  you will not  have to wait  until  your  last  day on  earth.......they  are  just like  the real deal filling too.....

I go into  anaphylactic  shock  with  almost all pain meds  so  I  suffer with the pain beats  not breathing...  They hate to see  me  go in  for  surgery.... the  docs  spend  a couple  of hours  before making  sure they  don't  give  me  something  that  I can't  have  which is most... I usually have a twilight  drug  but  I do  hear  & feel  everything... I had  7 screws  & a plate in  my ankle  &  heard  the drills  the  saw ,  the  swearing  from the docs  &  what they  wanted for lunch....  I  yelled  at them  for  talking  about  food!

What  really  scares  me  is  open heart surgery,  I have  mitral  valve prolapse & am  an  A-Fibber... so  someday  I may need  surgery..

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do have a Celiac friend who was eating regular pre-packaged Rice Kripie Treats thinking they were gluten free because "the label doesn't say they contain wheat".... She was able to eat them with no noticeable reaction and they contain malt flavoring. She does typically throw up and have D when glutened. I always thought it was strange that the Rice Krispie Treats didn't make her sick.

We're so off topic. But one of my local grocery stores had actual Twinkie branded and whatever their cupcakes are called branded baking kits. Came with pans, little cookbooks. All the good stuff. I almost bought one thinking I could just make them gluten free but I got all mad like a petulant toddler that there wasn't a Ho-Ho recipe and walked off. Yeah... regretting that one. :lol:

My guess about the non reaction would the painkillers caused it. Perhaps they numbed it? Took the edge off? Or a side effect moderated your usual glutening reaction? These are just guesses though.

FAKE TWINKIES:::::::: drum roll  please.......

 

cake:

1/2 c butter  or oleo

1 1/2 c  sugar

 

3 large  eggs

1 1/2 tsp  real  vanilla

 

1 1/4 c authenic  food  super  fine  brown rice flour

 

1/2 c potato  starch

 

1/4  c  tapioca  starch

 

3 1/2  tsp baking  powder

 

2 tsp  xanthan gum

 

1 tsp  salt

 

1 c  milk

 

Cream  butter/ sugar; add  eggs  & vanilla, mix well...  combine  in separate  bowl all the  dry ingredients &  whisk  together.... add  the  milk & the  dry ingredients alternately to the  cream mixture. Whip  until  fluffy. 

bake 350  for 25-30

cool.

 

make  sure  all  ingredients  are gluten-free!!!!!!!!!

 

You  can use  any  filling you like  but  I love  the  Todd Wilber  secret  recipe for the filling... it is  on  his   clone site.....

 

The  twinkie  pans  I use  are  from Bed Bath & Beyond but  now  days  they  can be  found  almost  anywhere... I bought  two pans  so I  could  bake  them  all at once.......

I know from nutrition reading that barley does not have as much gluten as wheat.  However, I also know that it causes trouble anyway.  Chalk one up for a lucky miss this time, but don't be convinced one can make a practice of it.

      @PlanetJanet, Sorry to hear about your back pain.  I have three crushed vertebrae myself.  I found that a combination of Thiamine, Cobalamin and Pyridoxine (all water soluble B vitamins) work effectively for my back pain.  This combination really works without the side effects of prescription and over-the-counter pain meds.  I hope you will give them a try.       Hi, trents, Thanks for responding! One book I read is called, Doing Harm, by Maya Dusenbery.  She has wonderful perspective and insight, and it's all research-based.  It's about how women can't get treated.  Everyone should read this!  I wouldn't mind reading it again, even.  She believes that women are so busy taking care of families, working, etc., that we are more likely to ignore our pain and symptoms for longer.  Men have women bugging them to go to the doctor.  Women don't have anyone telling us that.  We don't have time to go.  Providers think we are over-emotional, histrionic, depressed, have low tolerance to pain...Men get prescribed opioids for the same symptoms women are prescribed anti-depressants.  My car crash in January 2020 made going to the doctor a full-time job.  I grew up with 2 rough and tumble brothers, played outside, climbed trees.  I was tough and strong, pain didn't bother me, I knew it would heal.  But do you think I could get treated for back pain--as a woman?  I am so familiar now with the brush-offs, the blank looks, the, "Take your Ibuprofen," the insinuation that I am just over-reacting, trying to get attention, or even, "Drug Seeking."  Took almost 2 years, but what was happening was Degenerative Sacroiliitis.  I couldn't walk right, my gait was off, effected my entire spine because gait was off.  I had braced myself with my legs in a front-impact, slightly head-on crash with someone who made a left turn in front of me from the opposite direction.  I finally had SI Joint Fusion surgery, both sides.  It's not a cure. I have given up on trying to get properly treated.  There is so much pain with these spine issues caused by bad gait:  scoliosis, lithesis, arthropathy, bulged disc, Tarlov cysts.  And I can't take anything because of my bad tummy. Not that I would ever hurt anyone, but I can relate to Luis Mangione who couldn't get treated for his back injury. I feel so alone.

      They say maltodextrin is gluten-free, even if it's made from wheat, because the gluten is processed away.  It makes no difference to my body.  I still get uncontrollable flatulence and leakage.  Happens every time, even if I refuse to believe it will happen.  Once I was taking Gas-X chewables to hang around with people I was visiting and staying with, to make sure I would feel safer and more comfortable.  WRONG.  I forgot to read the label. I didn't realize it till after I left and went home--MALTODEXTRIN.  I was miserable the whole time. The second gastroenterologist I saw made the tentative diagnosis of microscopic colitis.  Usually occurs in women over 60, I was 59, had been in a crash, (2020) was taking alot of NSAIDS, muscle relaxants.  Had constant diarrhea, gas, leaking.  Unbearable, and I didn't know it was NSAIDS.  I was scheduled for two-way endoscopy, mouth to butt, but they wanted $2,000 up front.  Finally, had a colonoscopy in 2022, 10 biopsies, didn't find a thing!  MC can go into remission, which I was, of course, desperate to do.  No more NSAIDS, tried to cut down on all the other pain killers, everything, chemicals that I knew triggered me.  So, no, they didn't find anything.  So sad that we have to make ourselves sicker and more injured to get a proper diagnosis!
