Thoughts On Weight?

Hello everyone!

I'm currently on the gluten challenge (have been for about 10 weeks as I couldn't get a biopsy appointment earlier) and was wondering about celiac disease and weight issues. I find out the results of my celiac panel next week.

Anyway, I have almost always been the same weight. I'm not slim, but I'm not overweight either. My BMI is always at the border of normal/overweight. I take a long time to put on weight, and an even longer time to lose it, even when I put effort into it. I have always had what seems to be an extremely slow metabolism.

But now something's up, or at least doesn't seem right. I have been eating SO much more than I had gluten-free* now that I am on the gluten challenge. I literally eat at least - but often more - 4 slices of bread each day, pasta, cookies, etc etc etc, and I am not putting on weight! I am so confused. I expected to gain weight on this diet, as pre-challenge I ate really, really well. AND I don't exercise much. I do happen to be breastfeeding at the moment, but I also was prior to my gluten challenge, and had no changes to my weight (other than losing the extra 5kgs I gained while pregnant). I am always this weight, no matter what I eat.

Does this sound normal to you?

*ETA: I forgot to note that I wasn't 100% gluten-free, I did not go out of my way to eat gluten but occasionally would eat it if nothing else available - or wheat-derived ingredients in cooking.

Yes, you sound normal. You have many factors going on. You might not be gaining weight because MIGHT have intestinal damage from celiac disease or your baby is getting bigger and needs more from you.

I would not worry.

I am new here, I have been diagnosed with Microscopic Colitis (Lymphatic) years ago and have been gluten-free, DF since, but I still can have occasional bouts of diarrhea (still trying to figure that out).  I also have MS, Hypothyroid, Arthritis, Reynaud's and my rosacea has been acting up lately.  What treatment is suggested to help with rosacea?  I would like to know too if there is a test for celiac if you have been gluten-free?   Thank you, Barb

Well, that's interesting. I am lactose intolerant and have been managing that for years. I'd be interested in seeing if that changes once I feel better from not eating gluten (one thing at a time for now, though). Helpful to hear about the avenin. I will do some digging and pose that to the dietitian. Grateful for your feedback.

Recently my daughter ate in nandos harlow I rang in advance to speak about the celiac protocals and learned that childs portion chicken nandinos is cooked on the same grill as garlic bread even if they are celiac! Even if you clean it this is not good practise and will be making many children ill. I learnt adults butterfly chicken cooked on a grill purely for chicken.  This is fine and what we ordered however nandos need to take note of your practises for the safety of celiac children. my daughter has been ill from their nandinos chicken before and i emailed head office and they wouldnt accept responsibility

I agree with @RMJ, you have multiple positive tests so celiac disease is likely.  This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease.
