I know the doc said it would be 7-14 days but I have seriously chewed off all of my fingernails! How long did it take for others to come back? Today was day 6 (including biopsy day). I just really want to know what's going on with my son. :(

Hi,

Hope you hear soon - it's no fun waiting.  I have my endoscopy this Thursday and they said it would take 7 to 10 days (I'm sure that means business days).

Average is 10 days for biopsies.  Hang tight  :)

Since it sounds like testing (for celiac) is complete, you can go ahead and start him on the diet.  If the test results come back inconclusive (biopsy can only confirm celiac, not rule it out) you can continue the diet for 3 months to see if it helps.  Not sure what his symptoms were, but if you see improvement on the diet, you will have another clue as to what might be causing the problem.

We already went back on gluten free the day after his biopsy. They did biopsies of his esophagus, stomach, and the duodenum because we are not sure exactly what is going on. We know he has some sort of malabsorption, we just don't know what or where it's coming from. His blood work came back negative for celiac but when we did a gluten free trial, he grew 3/4 of an inch in one month. That is the same amount of growth he had in the previous year and a half on gluten. He is very undersized and has dropped over the years from the 97th percentile in height to below the 4th percentile. He dropped to the 5th percentile for weight. He also has iron deficiency anemia, high alkaline phosphatase, and low vitamin D.

Thank you both. I haven't had access to the test results but will get them and post here.

The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Duodenal ulcers are not uncommon either and often result from H.Pylori infections. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/duodenal-ulcer

I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
