I use Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar. The problem with salad dressings generally is the thickeners used may be wheat based. I know that Vlassic Pickles are safe. A lot of vinegars are safe, but not all--same with pickles. The safest thing to do is to call the companies in question.

I too have questions about vinegars. It seems to be in every thing that I want to buy........As in Kraft products. I would like to know that when I see just "vinegar" that the are gluten free. Isn't most vinegar gluten free?...unless it says malt vinegar?

Lisa B.

To my understanding, Paul Newman dressings are safe as well as most Annies Dressing are safe, but please read the lables.

I will contact Newman's, that is the dressing I like anyway.

Is apple cider vinegar ok to use in any recipe calling for vinegar??? Is it too sweet??? I cook and bake a lot and am just starting to experiment with the gluten free stuff.

I know I can do this, It really isn't that different than the diet I have had for the last few years, unknowingly I've been cutting back on gluten all over and never put 2 & 2 together...DUH!!! The hardest thing is finding which mixes will bake with my recipes. Anyway, thanks a lot!!! Jen

Most vinegars are safe except for malt vinegar.

A lot of Kraft dressings are gluten free. Read the label, they are very good at listing the ingredients.

Most pickles are safe, but you have to read labels. Pickles like mustard pickles that are thickened are likely not safe.

Sure you can do it! It just takes time and a little patience ... well, sometimes more than a little patience when you get voice mail while your trying to check on things  But you can do it and feel much healthier in the process :D

Pure vinegars that don't have anything added to them are gluten free, even if derived from wheat, because of the distillation process. Heinz white vinegar is derived from corn anyway, and rice vinegar is derived from rice. Champagne vinegar, wine vinegar, and balsamic vinegar are all derived from grapes (but check labeling for added ingredients).

Anyone try this? No matter what the brand, probiotics have ALWAYS made me break out bad. I am hesitant to try this simply for that fact, but I ordered a 3 month supply. Any input would be appreciated. Wish me luck.

@llisa, I am curious to know how much vitamin D you are taking and what is your plasma level in nmol/L or ng/ml what the doctor's target 25(OH)D is. Hopefully with the gluten free diet you'll be able to feel better.

Yes, but if you had been avoiding bread because of the stricture, that might explain the negative result of the previous celiac antibody test.

Hashimoto diagnosed over 20 years ago after my daughter was diagnosed and told me to get checked due to similar symptoms. Diabetes diagnosed same time. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency this past summer. Celiac last Wednesday. Have been having the digestive issues for a couple of years, several doctors--thought we had it solved with the Creon. Then symptoms got worse. I have a theory about that. I have a stricture in my esophagus that has to be dilated every 6-8 months. When it is tight, I have trouble swallowing. Bread is one of the harder things to swallow, so I avoid it. Had the stricture stretched end of October and started eating bread again. That's about when the diarrhea, bloating, gas, and pain started getting worse. Went in for another upper endoscopy and dilation of stricture last week. (It had been so tight this time, he scheduled a second dilation one month after the first.)  I told him how miserable I'd been, and he did the small intestine biopsy. I know they did the blood test for celiac about a year or more ago trying to find source of my problems,  and it was negative.

Diabetes and Hashimoto's as well, huh? You are the epitome of the autoimmune cascade effect. That is, once you get one autoimmune condition you tend to develop others. But I am curious. In the sequence of these several autoimmune diagnoses, where did the celiac diagnosis come? You certainly have a lot of health issues to juggle.
