Asking for your opinions on my symptoms

Over the past 4 months I have experienced the following symptoms:

-terrible bloating

-very loud stomach - not hunger noises, a bit lower down

-very gassy

-smelly wind

-going to the toilet 2-4 times a day (previously once a day like clockwork)

-towards the evening my stools become loose with an awful smell (fine first thing in the morning)

-constantly tired (this has been for more than 4 months though)

All of the above is happening every day, not just once or twice a week.  I am fine up until lunch time, then from about 2pm onwards it's all down hill. It's starting to really affect me as I spend my afternoon and evening in discomfort, and I struggle to socialise after work because of the pain and discomfort from the bloating and wind.  This all seemed to coincide with me starting a new job, but it's a great job and not at all stressful, so not sure if that has anything to do with it,

I've self-diagnosed myself as either celiac or IBS, but thought I'd ask on here to see if these symptoms were familiar to any of you with one of those conditions.  I am a vegetarian and fussy eater, so don't want to start cutting out gluten unless I have a diagnosis which means I am forced to. I am seeing my doctor next week, but am aware that it will take a few weeks to receive results if they do a blood test.

Your symptoms, frankly,  can be anything.  But here are the tests for celiac disease.

-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA and (tTG) IgG
-Deamidated Gliadin Peptide (DGP) IgA and (DGP) IgG
-EMA IgA
-total serum IgA and IgG (control test)

-endoscopic biopsy - make sure at least 6 samples are taken

VERY IMPORTANT:  Keep eating gluten daily until ALL testing is complete or the tests can be inaccurate.

Don't self diagnose, get to a doctor as you could be suffering from any number of conditions. Hope things get better for you soon!

It certainly sounds like Celiac Disease and one of the most telling is that you feel worse as the day goes on.  I felt fine in the mornings also but was eating gluten all day and then by day's end, I felt just the same as you.  Your immune system takes a little time to mount the attack so being sicker at night is what usually happens with classic Celiac.

Based on your symptoms, push the doctor hard to do a complete Celiac panel. I would also push for gene testing, to see if you carry a Celiac gene that could predispose you to trigger for it. The gene testing is not affected by anything so it's another useful tool in aiding a diagnosis or ruling it out.  I am a firm believer in doing both methods of testing in the beginning....it can tell you a lot.

Good luck!

Very helpful. Oh yes, I am quite fastidious about not falling off the diet. It's just that the list of things I must add to the restrictions seems to grow.

I know this post is old but was wondering if you ever resolved this. My son is in the same situation. Villi healed but gastritis / duodenitis remain and calprotectin elevated. Now testing for crohns which I am freaking out about.

I did a little research and one kind of aphthous ulcer (aka, canker sore) is the Herpetiform canker sore. It is well-known that celiac disease can cause a skin rash known as herpetiformis dermatitis. I can't help but wonder if there is a connection. Celiac disease is also listed in this article as a cause for canker sores: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/canker-sore/symptoms-causes/syc-20370615 Are you observing a strict gluten free diet? You might also look into reducing iodine consumption as that is known to help with herpetiformis dermatitis. Perhaps it will help with your canker sores as well.

Do you wear an M-95 mask left over from the pandemic when you handle flour? Do you eat out in restaurants? Do you take vitamins?
