1st glutening! Is this normal?

I'm a newly diagnosed celiac, just about two months into recovering. I was feeling soooo much better and my bowels were almost back to normal. Well...then my husband and I went out to eat this weekend to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. They seemed very knowledgable and concerned with cross contamination. About 15 hours later I got incredibly sick (cramping, bloating, and really, really bad diarhea). After about 12 hours of the worst diarhea I've ever experienced, I realized that our Imodium was gluten free! This stopped me from going anymore that night or the next day-I was so excited thinking I had turned a corner. However, once the medicine wore off the diarhea came back. So I guess what I'm wondering is-does anyone else experience extremely bad diarhea for days after a glutening? It's alarming!

P.S. I'm eating really a gentle diet to hopefully heal ?

For me it was better after a week. It's not fun! Get lots of rest. I don't have a lot of advice- I was diagnosed almost a year ago. For me, I'm vomiting also for the first day. I'm getting to a point where I rarely eat out- it's too stressful even if I don't get sick.  It took me almost 3 months before I really felt better.

Hi Mnoosh...yes, that's what happens to me.  The first time I was glutened I had eaten out and they seemed knowledgeable too...but alas I was so sick.  For me, it took 3 weeks to get back to normal BMs the first time.  It stinks, but it's true.  I was glutened in June and this time the D only lasted about a week, but other symptoms lasted longer.

It can be very hard and discouraging getting glutened, but you will feel better.  Keep eating soft, gentle foods that are easy on your system.  My go to is chicken breasts cooked in the crockpot, rice, boiled potatoes, we'll steamed carrots, etc.  These are easy on my system and give me some nutrition.

I hope you get to feeling better soon!  Try some peppermint or ginger tea...they are very soothing as well.

Hugs!

First time I was glutened I had horrible diarrhea. I've been fine for awhile. Then 3 weeks ago I was glutened and vomited and had diarrhea. Now 1 week ago I was glutened and vomited again. Had diarrhea the first night and then have been constipated and nautious for a week. Took fiber and it helped. Hopefully the nausia ends soon. I think I'm getting very sensitive.

Last major straight gluten exposure for me was in June, went out with a friend to celebrate and they said the chicken was gluten-free. Seemed to have a sauce on it but I ignored it and had a tiny bit in my salad. Within minutes I had a feeling in my mouth, sores, and my lymph nodes started hurting. I knew then but it was going to be bad later, few hours later I am on my floor at home in the door way, I was puking, dry heaving and heavy cramps, and so dazed I just laying there in the door way complete out of it dazed. Spent the next 6-8 hours like that, heart rate dropped to 32-38bpm at one point and turned completely white according to my friend who was watching over me. Spent the next week just out of it, numbness was back to its worse, (finger tips lack surface feeling and tend to fumble stuff and burn my hands cooking and not notice it). Following next couple of days where odd bloody stools. .....I normally end up binge eating almond butter, protein powders, and coconut afterwords to get my weight back up and keep it on. BCAAs also seem to help with recovery and soreness

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It's good to know that this is somewhat to be expected. Do you all take anti-diarrhea meds or just let things run their course after glutening?

I am at a loss with spine issues. I have had 4 spine surgeries.  These were=all before my celiac diagnosis.  Currently I am dealing with chest pain arm pain and burning with increased weakness in my legs.  I have had bowel incontinence for 6 months.  I had a nuclear stress test and heart issues were ruled out.  I can not get a doctor to listen to me and diagnose me.  I am afraid I will end paralyzed. I had a question of celiac 11 years ago and then was told I did not have it.  Last month it was finally confirmed by biopsy.

My journey started over 11 years ago. I know this because I recently went to set up an account here and discovered I had set one up 11 years ago, when I first suspected celiac.  Also of note, it began in the US and continued in the UK, so I’ve experienced both countries inability to figure out what is wrong with me.   So, 11 years ago I had major stomach pain, gas, bloating, nerve pain in hands and feet (clear MRI), anxiety, depression, migraines, and this weird gnawing pain in my stomach. PCP said IBS and sent me on my merry way. After chatting with friends, and at their suggestion, I gave up gluten and dairy (actually did a complete elimination diet) with fantastic effects. After I month I reintroduced and was in agony so went back to the PCP. She thought I might be celiac so sent me for full allergy testing and a celiac test. No idea which. This was I’m 2014/2015.  It came back negative. But I’d been eating gluten for three days at that point and had not been told I needed to be eating gluten for the test.  Was told it was IBS. Kept eating gluten.   2018 - by now the gnawing pain was constant.  Figured it might be an ulcer.  Other “IBS” pain and nerve pain. Was finally referred to gastroenterologist who did an endoscopy and biopsies and found chronic gastritis and H.Pylori but no evidence of celiac.  Had a bucketload of antibiotics and the H.Pylori went away (confirmed by breath test).  Alas the pain didn’t.  Figured I didn’t have celiac but the gastritis remained despite clearing up the infection.  Gave up gluten anyway because I felt better off it.  2019 / 2020 - moved to UK, grandmother died, Covid hit. With all this stress I started eating all the gluten  like constantly  everything I missed.  Stomach hurt, but of course it did - I was eating like crap.  Not just gluten, just bad food generally    2023 demanded h.pylori test because I’m convinced if I had it before I might have it again and maybe that’s why I’m in more pain than ever. Fecal test, came back negative.  put on PPIs 2024 - went to the dr because of severe gas pains. They were so bad nothing helped and they were keeping me away at night.  All my previous symptoms are worse than ever and now had stabbing ovary pain. I thought maybe now it’s all due to perimenopause.  Dr doesn’t even examine me.  Just tells me it’s IBS and tells me we will run blood test to rule out other things, just to be safe. Well, my IgA-tTG came back positive (67 0-20 is normal). They ran an EMA test and that too was positive. I finally felt I was getting somewhere. I went to the dr and she told me to quit eating gluten. I said I wanted an endoscopy before I stop eating gluten because that’s what the medical guidelines recommend. She wasn’t too happy about it but referred me to get an endoscopy.  I had one and the took 5 samples from the duodenum (4xD2 and 1 x D1 - whatever that means). Well, results are in and my biopsy was normal.  I am just at a loss now.  I felt so happy to finally have an answer, but now am frustrated.  I know I feel better gluten free and I tend to continue that way, but to have the positive blood tests then receive a negative biopsy (I was eating fully gluten prior to this for years) has just left me feeling …. I don’t know.  Lost!   Thanks for reading this.

Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.
